✧ Umm al-Harir, when a man of the Arabs died, it weighed heavily on her. It was said to her, "Umm al-Harir, why do we see that when a man of the Arabs dies, it weighs heavily on you?" She said, "I heard my master say: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'Among the signs of the approach of the Hour is the destruction of the Arabs.'" Muhammad b. Abi Razin said, "Her master was Talha b. Malik."

✧ When a man came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and had no acquaintance in Madinah with whom to stay, he stayed with the people of the Suffah. I had companions there, and we used to receive from the Messenger of God ﷺ each day, between every two of us, two mudds of dates. While the Messenger of God ﷺ was in one of the prayers, a caller from among his Companions called out, "O Messenger of God, the dates have burned our stomachs and our guts are on fire." When the Messenger of God ﷺ finished the prayer, he stood up, praised God, and extolled Him, then mentioned what he and his people had endured of hardship. He said, "I and my two companions spent more than ten days with no food except wild berries, until we came to our brothers among the Ansar, and they shared their food with us. The bulk of their food was dates. By the One besides whom there is no god, if I could find bread and meat for you, I would feed you. Perhaps you will live to see a time — or whoever among you lives to see it — when people will wear garments like the covering of the Ka'bah, and bowls of food will be brought to you morning and evening."

✧ He came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Extend your hand." He said, "Even if I command you to sever ties with your mother?" He said, "No." He said, "Then I returned to him and said, 'Extend your hand so I may pledge allegiance to you.' He said, 'Upon what?' I said, 'Upon Islam.' He said, 'Even if I command you to sever ties with your mother?' I said, 'No.' Then I returned to him a third time. He had a mother and was one of the most dutiful of people to her. The Prophet ﷺ said to him, 'O Talha, there is no severing of kinship ties in our religion, but I wished that there be no doubt in your faith.' So he embraced Islam and his Islam was excellent. Then he fell ill, and the Prophet ﷺ visited him and found him unconscious. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'I think Talha will pass away tonight. If he regains consciousness, send for me.' Talha regained consciousness in the middle of the night and said, 'Did the Messenger of God ﷺ visit me?' They said, 'Yes,' and told him what he had said. He said, 'Do not send for him at this hour, lest an animal sting him or something befall him. But in the morning, convey my greetings to him and tell him to ask forgiveness for me.' Then he passed away. After the Prophet ﷺ prayed the dawn prayer, he asked about him, and they informed him of his death and what he had said. The Messenger of God ﷺ raised his hands and said, 'O God, meet him while he smiles at You and You smile at him.'

✧ On the authority of a brother of 'A'ishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, from her mother's side, from Banu Daws, he said: I saw in a dream that I met a group of Jews, so I asked them and they asked me. I said: 'You are a people, were it not that you say 'Uzayr is the son of God.' They said: 'And you, you are a people, were it not that you say: What God wills and Muhammad wills.' Then I met their counterparts among the Christians, so I asked them and they asked me. I said: 'You are a people, were it not that you say the Messiah is the son of God.' They said: 'And you, you are a people, were it not that you say: What God wills and Muhammad wills.' So I told the Messenger of God ﷺ about it. He said: 'Did you tell anyone about it before me?' I said: 'Yes, O Prophet of God.' Then the Prophet of God ﷺ stood on the pulpit and said: 'Your brother saw a dream and has told you what he saw. What prevented me from forbidding you from that was shyness. So when you speak, say: What God wills alone.'

✧ I was in the market of Dhu al-Majaz when a young man passed by wearing a red striped cloak, saying, "O people, say: There is no god but God, and you will prosper." A man behind him was pelting him, having bloodied his heels and legs, saying, "O people, he is a liar, so do not obey him." I asked, "Who is this?" They said, "This is the youth of Banu Hashim who claims that he is the Messenger of God ﷺ, and this is his uncle Abd al-Uzza." When Muhammad ﷺ emigrated to Madinah and the people embraced Islam, we departed from al-Rabadhah that day with a woman of ours in a howdah. When we came to Madinah and approached its walls, we put on clothes other than our own, and there was a man in the road. He said, "From where are the people coming?" We said, "We are bringing provisions for our families from its dates. We have a red camel standing, tied with a nose rope." He said, "Will you sell me your camel?" We said, "Yes." He said, "For how much?" We said, "For such and such saa of dates." He did not reduce anything from what we said, and he struck with his hand and took the camel's nose rope, then turned away with it. When he disappeared from us behind the walls, we said, "By God, we have done nothing; we have traded with someone we do not know." A woman sitting said, "I have seen a man whose face was like the full moon on the night of al-Badr. By God, he will not wrong you nor deceive you; I guarantee your camel." Then a man came and said, "I am the messenger of the Messenger of God ﷺ to you. This is your dates, so eat and be satisfied and measure out." He said, "We ate and were satisfied and measured out and received in full." Then we entered Madinah and came to the mosque, and there he was, delivering a sermon on the pulpit. We heard from his speech: "Give charity, for charity is better for you. The upper hand is better than the lower hand. Begin with those you support: your father, your mother, your sister, your brother, and then those nearest to you, then those nearest to you." A man from the Ansar stood and said, "O Messenger of God, these are Banu Yarbu; they killed a man of ours in the pre-Islamic era, so aid us against them." He said, "The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Indeed, a father does not bear the crime of his child. Indeed, a father does not bear the crime of his child. Indeed, a father does not bear the crime of his child.'" three times.

✧ I saw in what a sleeping person sees, as if I passed by a group of Jews. I said: 'Who are you?' They said: 'We are the Jews.' I said: 'You are indeed a people, were it not that you say 'Uzayr is the son of God.' They said: 'And you are a people, were it not that you say: What God wills and Muhammad wills.' Then I passed by a group of Christians. I said: 'You are indeed a people, were it not that you say the Messiah is the son of God.' They said: 'And you are a people, were it not that you say: What God wills and Muhammad wills.' When morning came, I told some people about it. Then I came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him. He said: 'Did you tell anyone about it?' I said: 'Yes.' When he prayed the noon prayer, he stood as a preacher, praised God and extolled Him, then said: 'Indeed Tufayl saw a dream and told those of you whom he told. Indeed you used to say a word that shyness from you prevented me from forbidding you. So do not say: What God wills and Muhammad wills.'

✧ We set out, six of us, as a delegation to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ: five from Banu Hanifah and the sixth a man from Banu Dab'ah b. Rabi'ah. We came to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, prayed with him, and told him that in our land there was a church of ours. We asked him for some of the leftover water of his purification. He called for water, performed ablution with it and rinsed his mouth, then poured it for us into a water skin. He said, “Take this water, and when you reach your town, demolish your church, then sprinkle its place with the water, and take that place as a mosque.” We said, “O Prophet of Allah, the town is far and the water will dry up.” He said, “Then add water to it, for that will only increase its goodness.” We set out with it until we reached our town and did as he commanded. That day a monk from Tayyi' saw us, and when we called the adhan for prayer, the monk said, “A call of truth.” Then he fled, and we never saw him again.

✧ The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever touches his private part must perform ablution.” This hadith was not narrated from Ayyub b. Utbah except by Hammad b. Muhammad, and Hammad b. Muhammad also narrated the other hadith. Both are authentic according to me. It seems likely that he heard the first hadith from the Prophet ﷺ before this one, then heard this one later. Thus it agrees with the hadith of Busrah, Umm Habibah, Abu Hurayrah, Zayd b. Khalid al-Juhani, and others who narrated from the Prophet ﷺ the command to perform ablution from touching the private part. So he heard both the abrogated and the abrogating.
