✧ On the authority of Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, that Abu Hudhayfa b. Utba b. Rabi'a b. Abd Shams, who was among those who witnessed Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, adopted Salim as a son just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ adopted Zayd b. Haritha. Anyone who adopted a man in the pre-Islamic era, the people would call him (the adopted son) by his (adoptive father's) name and he would inherit from his legacy, until Allah revealed concerning that: {Call them by their fathers' names; that is more just in the sight of Allah. But if you do not know their fathers, then they are your brothers in religion and your clients.} So they were returned to their fathers. Whoever had no known father was a client. Aisha said: And Sahla bt. Suhayl b. Amr al-Qurashi, then al-Amiri, was married to Abu Hudhayfa b. Utba b. Rabi'a. She came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when Allah revealed that, and said: O Messenger of Allah, we used to consider Salim a son, and he used to stay with me and with Abu Hudhayfa in one house, and he would see me while I am in a state of undress, and Allah has revealed about them what you know. So what do you think about his situation, O Messenger of Allah? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her: "Breastfeed him." So she breastfed him five sucklings, and he became forbidden by them, and he took the status of her son through breastfeeding.
