حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْوَاسِطِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي بَلْجٍ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي سُلَيْمٍ قَالَ

رَأَيْتُ سَمْرَاءَ بِنْتَ نَهِيكٍ وَكَانَتْ قَدْ أَدْرَكَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ «عَلَيْهَا دِرْعٌ غَلِيظٌ وَخِمَارٌ غَلِيظٌ بِيَدِهَا سَوْطٌ تُؤَدِّبُ النَّاسَ وَتَأْمُرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ»

Translation

Chain of narrators
  1. ʿAbdullāh b. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal from my father
  2. Muḥammad b. Yazīd al-Wāsiṭī
  3. Abū Balj Yaḥyá b. Abū Sulaym

✧ I saw Samrāʾ bt. Nahīk, and she had met the Prophet ﷺ. She wore a thick garment and a thick head covering, and in her hand was a whip. She disciplined people, enjoined good, and forbade evil.
