✧ A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was dividing dates on the day of Khaybar and said: O Muhammad, be just. He said: "Woe to you! Who will be just to you if I am not just? Or from whom will you seek justice after me?" Then he said: "Soon a people like this one will come, reciting the Book of Allah while they are its enemies, reciting the Book of Allah with shaved heads. When they emerge, strike their necks."

✧ There will be among my nation people who are severe, whose tongues are sharp with the Qur'an, but it does not go beyond their collarbones. They will pass out of the religion as an arrow passes through the game. So when you meet them, kill them, for the one who kills them will be rewarded.

✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "There will be in my nation a people who are enemies, whose tongues are sharp with the Qur'an. When you see them, put them to sleep [i.e., kill them].

✧ I wanted to see a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who would narrate to me about the Kharijites. He said: I met Abu Barzah on the day of Arafah among a group of his companions and I said: O Abu Barzah, narrate to us something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying about the Kharijites. He said: I will narrate to you what my two ears heard and my two eyes saw. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought dinars from a land and he was distributing them. With him was a black man with closely cut hair, wearing two white garments, with the trace of prostration between his eyes. He confronted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and came to him from his front, but he did not give him anything. Then he came from his left, but he did not give him anything. Then he came from behind him and said: By Allah, O Muhammad, you have not been just in the distribution today. The Prophet ﷺ became angry and said: "You will not find after me anyone more just to you than me." He said it three times. Then he said: "A people will emerge from the direction of the east, their guidance is like this, reciting the Qur'an but it does not go beyond their collarbones. They will pass out of the religion as an arrow passes through the game, then they will not return to it." He placed his hand on his chest. "Their mark is shaving. They will continue to emerge until the last of them emerges. When you see them, kill them." Hammad said it three times. "They are the worst of creation and creatures." Hammad said it three times. And he said: "He also said: They will not return to it."

  5. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 2648Sahih

✧ There will be in my nation disagreement and division, and a people will come who please you and are pleased with themselves. Those who kill them are closer to Allah than them. They speak well but act badly, and they call to Allah but they are not from Allah in anything. When you meet them, put them to sleep [i.e., kill them]." They said: O Messenger of Allah, describe them for us. He said: "Their sign is shaving and tashbit [perhaps a term for their appearance].

✧ There will be in my nation disagreement and division: a people who speak well but act badly, reciting the Qur'an but it does not go beyond their collarbones. One of you would consider his prayer insignificant compared to their prayer, and his fasting insignificant compared to their fasting. They will pass out of the religion as an arrow passes through the game, not returning until the arrow is returned to its bowstring. They are the worst of creation and creatures. Blessed is the one who kills them and whom they kill. They call to the Book of Allah, but they are not from it in anything. Whoever fights them is closer to Allah than them." They said: O Messenger of Allah, what is their sign? He said: "Shaving."

✧ Their example is like a man who shoots an arrow and then seeks the arrow where it landed. He takes it and looks at its bow notch and does not see any grease or blood on it. Then he looks at its fletching and does not see any grease or blood on it. Then he looks at its arrowhead and does not see any grease or blood on it. Just as nothing of grease and blood clung to it, likewise these people do not cling to anything of Islam."

✧ I entered with Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri upon Hudhayfah, and we said, “O Abu ‘Abd Allah, tell us what you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the tribulation.” Hudhayfah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Turn with the Book of Allah wherever it turns.” We said, “If the people disagree, with whom should we be?” He said, “Look to the group in which Ibn Sumayyah is, and adhere to it, for he turns with the Book of Allah.” I said, “Who is Ibn Sumayyah?” He said, “Do you not know him?” I said, “Explain him to me.” He said, “Ammār b. Yāsir.” I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to Ammār, “O Abu al-Yaqzān, you will not die until the transgressing group that deviates from the path kills you.”

✧ "He said to him and his son Ali, 'Go to Abu Sa'id and listen to his words about the matter of the Khawarij.' So they went and found him fixing a wall. When he saw us, he took his cloak, covered himself with it, and then began to speak to us until he mentioned it in the mosque. He said, 'We used to carry one brick at a time, while the construction workers carried two bricks at a time.' The Prophet ﷺ saw him and began to shake the dust off his head, saying, 'O Ammar, why don't you carry one brick at a time as your companions do?' Ammar replied, 'I seek reward from Allah.' The Prophet ﷺ shook his head and said, 'Woe to Ammar, the opposing faction will kill him.' Ammar said, 'I seek refuge in Allah from trials and tribulations.'"

✧ I witnessed Abu Umāmah al-Bāhilī while he was standing over the heads of the Ḥarūriyyah at the gate of Damascus, saying, “Dogs of the people of the Fire,” he said it three times, “the best of those killed are those they killed,” and his eyes shed tears. A man said to him, “O Abu Umāmah, do you consider your saying that these are the dogs of the Fire something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or from your own opinion?” He said, “Then I would be bold indeed if I had not heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except once, twice, or three times,” and he counted seven times, “I would not have told it to you.” A man said to him, “I saw that your eyes shed tears.” He said, “When they were believers they disbelieved after their faith.” Then he recited, {And be not like those who became divided and differed after clear proofs came to them} [Āl ‘Imrān 105], the verse, “so it applies to them twice.”

✧ I heard Abu Umāmah while he was standing over the heads of the Ḥarūriyyah at the gate of Ḥimṣ or the gate of Damascus, saying, “Dogs of the Fire, dogs of the Fire, the worst of those killed under the shade of the sky; the best of those killed are those they killed.”

✧ I came to ‘Ā’ishah. While we were sitting with her after her return from Iraq, in the nights when ‘Alī was fought, she said, “O ‘Abd Allah b. Shaddād, will you be truthful with me about what I ask you? Tell me about these people whom ‘Alī killed.” I said, “Why would I not be truthful with you?” She said, “Tell me about their story.” I said, “When ‘Alī corresponded with Mu‘āwiyah and appointed the two arbitrators, eight thousand of the reciters of the people went out against him and encamped in a land on the side of Kufa called Ḥarūrā’. They disapproved of him and said, ‘You have stripped off a shirt that Allah clothed you with and named you by, then you went and appointed arbitration in Allah’s religion, while there is no judgment except Allah’s.’ When ‘Alī learned of their reproach and their separation from him, he ordered a caller to announce that no one should enter upon the Commander of the Believers except a man who had memorized the Qur’an. When the house was filled with reciters, he called for a large muṣḥaf and placed it before him, and he began to strike it with his hand, saying, ‘O muṣḥaf, speak to the people.’ The people called out to him, ‘O Commander of the Believers, what do you ask it about? It is only paper and ink, and we speak of what we have seen from it. What do you want?’ He said, ‘Your companions who went out—between me and them is the Book of Allah. Allah ﷻ says concerning a woman and a man: If you fear a breach between them, send an arbitrator from his family and an arbitrator from her family. The nation of Muhammad ﷺ has greater sanctity than a woman and a man. They condemned me for corresponding with Mu‘āwiyah and writing ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib, while Suhayl b. ‘Amr came and we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at al-Ḥudaybiyyah when his people made peace with Quraysh. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote, “In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.” Suhayl said, “Do not write ‘In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.’” He said, “How should I write?” He said, “Write: In Your name, O Allah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Write.” Then he said, “Write: From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah.” They said, “If we knew that you were the Messenger of Allah, we would not have opposed you.” So he wrote, “This is what Muhammad b. ‘Abd Allah has made peace upon with Quraysh.” Allah says in His Book: {Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day} [al-Aḥzāb 21]. Then ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib sent him to them. I went out with them until we reached the middle of their camp. Ibn al-Kawwā’ stood up and addressed the people, saying, “O bearers of the Qur’an, this is ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Abbās. Whoever does not know him, I know him from the Book of Allah: this is the one about whose people it was revealed: {Rather, they are a quarrelsome people} [al-Zukhruf 58]. Send him back to his companion and do not debate the Book of Allah with him.” Their orators stood up and said, “No, by Allah, we will debate the Book of Allah with him. If he brings the truth, we will recognize it and follow it; and if he brings falsehood, we will refute him with his falsehood and send him back to his companion.” So they debated the Book of Allah with him for three days. Four thousand of them returned, all repentant, among them Ibn al-Kawwā’, until ‘Alī brought them in. Then ‘Alī sent to the rest of them, saying, “You have seen what has happened regarding our affair and the affair of the people. Stay where you wish until the nation of Muhammad ﷺ gathers, and settle where you wish between us and you, provided that we protect you from our spears as long as you do not cut off a road or shed blood unjustly. If you do that, we have declared war against you on equal terms. Indeed, Allah does not love the treacherous.” ‘Ā’ishah said to him, “O Ibn Shaddād, so he killed them?” He said, “By Allah, he did not send against them until they cut off the road, shed blood without Allah’s right, killed Ibn Khabbāb, and violated the protected people.” She said, “By Allah?” I said, “By Allah, besides whom there is no god.” She said, “What about something that reached me from the people of Iraq, which they talk about, saying ‘the one with the breast, the one with the breast’?” I said, “I saw him and stood over him with ‘Alī among the slain. He called the people and said, ‘Do you recognize this one?’ Most of those who came said, ‘I saw him in the mosque of Banū So-and-so praying,’ and ‘I saw him in the mosque of Banū So-and-so praying,’ but no one brought a definite identification except that.” She said, “What did ‘Alī say when he stood over him, as the people of Iraq claim?” I said, “I heard him say, ‘Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth.’” She said, “Did you hear anything else from him?” I said, “O Allah, no.” She said, “Yes, Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth.”

I witnessed Ali on the day of Nahrawan asking for the mukhaddaj (a man whose arm had a deformity who was foretold to ʿAlī by the Prophet ﷺ), but he was unable to find one. His forehead began to sweat and he became distressed. Eventually, he was able to find him and he fell down in prostration, saying, "By Allah, you have neither lied nor been lied to."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to him and began to strike with his hand in it, giving right and left. Among them was a man with short garments, having a mark between his eyes from prostration. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept striking his hand right and left until the wealth was exhausted. When the wealth was exhausted, he turned away and said, “By Allah, you have not been just since today.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began turning his palm and saying, “If I am not just, then who will be just after me? Indeed, a renegade group will emerge, passing through the religion as an arrow passes through the game, then they will not return to it until the arrow returns to its bow. They recite the Qur’an, but it does not go beyond their collarbones. They speak well but act badly. Whoever meets them should fight them. Whoever kills them will have the best reward, and whoever they kill will have the best martyrdom. They are the worst of creation. Allah is free from them. The most rightful of the two parties will kill them.”

Amr ibn al-As stood up in alarm and went to Muawiyah. Muawiyah asked him, "What's the matter with you?" Amr replied, "Ammar has been killed."

✧ “O Abu Dharr, how will you be when a death strikes the people until a house is worth a servant?” meaning a grave. I said, “What Allah and His Messenger choose for me.” Then he said, “How will you be when a famine strikes the people until you come to your mosque and cannot return to your bed, and cannot rise from your bed to your mosque?” I said, “What Allah and His Messenger choose for me.” He said, “Keep to chastity.” Then he said, “How will you be when a killing strikes the people until the stones of al-Zayt are drowned in blood?” I said, “What Allah and His Messenger choose for me, or Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “Stay in your house.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, should I not take my sword and strike with it those who do that?” He said, “Then you would have shared with the people.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, what if someone enters my house?” He said, “If you fear that the flash of the sword will overwhelm you, say like this, and throw the edge of your garment over your face, so he will bear his sin and your sin, and he will be among the people of the Fire.”

  24. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 2667Sahih

✧ Marwān b. al-Ḥakam said to Ayman b. Khuraym, “Will you not go out and fight with us?” He said, “My father and my uncle witnessed Badr, and they enjoined me not to fight anyone who says ‘There is no god but Allah.’ If you bring me a release from the Fire, I will fight with you.” He said, “Then leave us.” He left saying: [al-baḥr al-wāfir] “I am not one to kill a man who prays / to another ruler from Quraysh. His is his authority and upon me is my sin / I seek refuge with Allah from ignorance and recklessness. Should I kill a Muslim without crime? / Then my life, as long as I live, will not benefit me.”

  25. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 2668Sahih

✧ ‘Uthmān b. ‘Affān sent Sa‘īd b. al-‘Āṣ to Kufa on the Day of al-Jara‘ah. They went out to him and turned him back. I was sitting with Ibn Mas‘ūd and Ḥudhayfah. Ibn Mas‘ūd said, “I did not think that these would return without a cupping-glass of blood being spilled, and I know nothing of that except something I knew while Muhammad ﷺ was alive: ‘A man becomes a believer in the morning and in the evening has nothing with him, and becomes a believer in the evening and in the morning has nothing with him. He fights in tribulation today and Allah kills him tomorrow; his heart is turned upside down and his buttocks are raised above.’” I said, “His lower part?” He said, “Rather, his buttocks.”

  26. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 2669Sahih

✧ A slave boy belonged to Baba, and Baba used to beat him over some matters and punish him, and the boy used to treat his master with enmity. So he sold him. Then one day the boy met him, and the boy had a sword with him, and that was during the governorship of Sa'id b. al-'As. The slave drew the sword against Baba and brandished it at him, but the people restrained him from him. So Baba entered upon 'A'ishah and informed her of what the slave had done. 'A'ishah said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Whoever points a piece of iron at any of the Muslims intending to kill him, his blood has become lawful." She said: So Baba went out from her presence, went to the master of the slave who had bought him from him, asked him to rescind the sale, and he rescinded it, so he returned him to him. Then Baba took him and killed him.

✧ "A time is about to come when people will be sifted with a sifting, and a residue of people will remain whose covenants and trusts have become corrupt, and they will differ, and they will be like this" — and he interlaced his fingers. They said: "So how will it be for us, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "You will take what you recognize and leave what you reject, and you will attend to your own private affairs and abandon the affairs of the common people."
