أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الزَّاهِدُ ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ بَحْرٍ الْبُرِّيُّ ثنا أَبِي ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الصَّنْعَانِيُّ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ

«سَيَكُونُ فِي أُمَّتِي اخْتِلَافٌ وَفُرْقَةٌ وَسَيَجِيءُ قَوْمٌ يُعْجِبُونَكُمْ وَتُعْجِبُهُمْ أَنْفُسُهُمْ الَّذِينَ يَقْتُلُونَهُمْ أَوْلَى بِاللَّهِ مِنْهُمْ يُحْسِنُونَ الْقِيلَ وَيُسِيئُونَ الْفِعْلَ وَيَدْعُونَ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَلَيْسُوا مِنَ اللَّهِ فِي شَيْءٍ فَإِذَا لَقِيتُمُوهُمْ فَأَنِيمُوهُمْ» قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ انْعَتْهُمْ لَنَا قَالَ «آيَتُهُمُ الْحَلْقُ وَالتَّسْبِيتُ»

✧ There will be in my nation disagreement and division, and a people will come who please you and are pleased with themselves. Those who kill them are closer to Allah than them. They speak well but act badly, and they call to Allah but they are not from Allah in anything. When you meet them, put them to sleep [i.e., kill them]." They said: O Messenger of Allah, describe them for us. He said: "Their sign is shaving and tashbit [perhaps a term for their appearance].
