عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «لَمَّا خَلَقَ اللهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَالنَّارَ أَرْسَلَ جِبْرِيلَ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ» فَقَالَ «انْظُرْ إِلَيْهَا وَإِلَى مَا أَعْدَدْتُ لِأَهْلِهَا فِيهَا فَرَجَعَ» فَقَالَ «وَعِزَّتِكَ لَا يَسْمَعُ بِهَا أَحَدٌ إِلَّا دَخَلَهَا فَأَمَرَ بِهَا فَحُفَّتْ بِالْمَكَارِهِ» فَقَالَ «اذْهَبْ إِلَيْهَا فَانْظُرْ إِلَيْهَا وَإِلَى مَا أَعْدَدْتُ لِأَهْلِهَا فِيهَا فَإِذَا هِيَ قَدْ حُفَّتْ بِالْمَكَارِهِ» فَقَالَ «وَعِزَّتِكَ لَقَدْ خَشِيتُ أَنْ لَا يَدْخُلَهَا أَحَدٌ» قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَانْظُرْ إِلَى النَّارِ وَإِلَى مَا أَعْدَدْتُ لِأَهْلِهَا فِيهَا فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا فَإِذَا هِيَ يَرْكَبُ بَعْضُهَا بَعْضًا فَرَجَعَ» فَقَالَ «وَعِزَّتِكَ لَا يَدْخُلُهَا أَحَدٌ فَأَمَرَ بِهَا فَحُفَّتْ بِالشَّهَوَاتِ» فَقَالَ «ارْجِعْ إِلَيْهَا فَانْظُرْ إِلَيْهَا فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا فَإِذَا هِيَ قَدْ حُفَّتْ بِالشَّهَوَاتِ فَرَجَعَ» فَقَالَ «وَعِزَّتِكَ لَقَدْ خَشِيتُ أَنْ لَا يَنْجُوَ مِنْهَا أَحَدٌ إِلَّا دَخَلَهَا»
✧ From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: 'When Allah created Paradise and Hell, He sent Jibril to Paradise, and said: "Look at it and at what I have prepared for its inhabitants therein." So he returned and said: "By Your might, no one will hear of it but will enter it." Then He commanded that it be surrounded with hardships, and said: "Go to it and look at it and at what I have prepared for its inhabitants therein." He found that it had been surrounded with hardships, and said: "By Your might, I fear that no one will enter it." He said: "Go and look at the Fire and at what I have prepared for its inhabitants therein." He looked at it and found that its parts were consuming one another, then he returned and said: "By Your might, no one will enter it." Then He commanded that it be surrounded with desires, and said: "Return to it and look at it." He looked at it and found that it had been surrounded with desires, then he returned and said: "By Your might, I fear that no one will escape it but will enter it."'

✧ The Prophet ﷺ heard 'Umar saying, 'By my father, by my father,' and said: 'Allah forbids you to swear by your fathers.' 'Umar said: 'By Allah, I never swore by them after that, neither intentionally nor repeating it from someone else.'

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever swears by a religion other than Islam falsely, then he is as he said. And whoever kills himself with something, he will be punished with it in the fire of Hell." Qutaybah said in his narration: "with something intentionally."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever says, 'I am innocent of Islam,' if he is lying, then he is as he said. And if he is truthful, he will not return to Islam safely."

أَنَّ يَهُودِيًّا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّكُمْ تُنَدِّدُونَ وَإِنَّكُمْ تُشْرِكُونَ تَقُولُونَ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ وَشِئْتُ وَتَقُولُونَ وَالْكَعْبَةِ فَأَمَرَهُمُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا أَرَادُوا أَنْ يَحْلِفُوا أَنْ يَقُولُوا وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ وَيَقُولُ أَحَدُهُمْ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ ثُمَّ شِئْتُ
✧ That a Jew came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "You associate others with Allah and you commit polytheism. You say, 'What Allah wills and you will,' and you say, 'By the Ka'bah.'" So the Prophet ﷺ commanded them, when they wanted to swear, to say: "By the Lord of the Ka'bah," and for one of them to say: "What Allah wills, then you will."

كُنَّا نَذْكُرُ بَعْضَ الْأَمْرِ وَأَنَا حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِالْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَحَلَفْتُ بِاللَّاتِ وَالْعُزَّى فَقَالَ لِي أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِئْسَ مَا قُلْتَ ائْتِ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبِرْهُ فَإِنَّا لَا نَرَاكَ إِلَّا قَدْ كَفَرْتَ فَلَقِيتُهُ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ «قُلْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ وَتَعَوَّذْ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ وَاتْفِلْ عَنْ شِمَالِكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ وَلَا تَعُدْ لَهُ»
✧ We were discussing some matter, and I had recently come from the pre-Islamic era. I swore by al-Lāt and al-'Uzzā. The Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "What you said is evil. Go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and inform him, for we do not think you have anything but disbelieved." So I met him and informed him. He said: "Say, 'There is no god but Allah alone' three times, and seek refuge from Satan three times, and spit to your left three times, and do not repeat it."

أَصْحَابِي بِئْسَ مَا قُلْتَ هُجْرًا فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ «قُلْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ وَانْفُثْ عَنْ شِمَالِكَ ثَلَاثًا وَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ ثُمَّ لَا تَعُدْ»
✧ My companions said: "What you said is evil and obscene." So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said: "Say, 'There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion, and His is the praise, and He has power over all things.' And blow to your left three times, and seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan. Then do not repeat it."

أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِسَبْعٍ «أَمَرَنَا بِاتِّبَاعِ الْجَنَائِزِ وَعِيَادَةِ الْمَرِيضِ وَتَشْمِيتِ الْعَاطِسِ وَإِجَابَةِ الدَّاعِي وَنَصْرِ الْمَظْلُومِ وَإِبْرَارِ الْقَسَمِ وَرَدِّ السَّلَامِ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us with seven things: "He commanded us to follow funerals, to visit the sick, to respond to the one who sneezes, to accept invitations, to help the oppressed, to fulfill the oath, and to return the greeting of peace."

أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي يَعْنِي رَهْطٍ مِنَ الْأَشْعَرِيِّينَ نَسْتَحْمِلُهُ فَقَالَ «وَاللهِ لَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ وَمَا عِنْدِي مَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ» ثُمَّ لَبِثْنَا مَا شَاءَ اللهُ فَأُتِيَ بِإِبِلٍ فَأَمَرَ لَنَا بِثَلَاثَةِ ذَوْدٍ فَلَمَّا انْطَلَقْنَا قَالَ بَعْضُنَا لِبَعْضٍ لَا يُبَارِكُ اللهُ لَنَا أَتَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَسْتَحْمِلُهُ فَحَلَفَ لَا يَحْمِلُنَا فَحَمَلْنَا قَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى فَأَتَيْنَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَذَكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ «مَا أَنَا حَمَلْتُكُمْ بَلِ اللهُ حَمَلَكُمْ إِنِّي وَاللهِ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ لَا أَحْلِفُ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَأَرَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا إِلَّا كَفَّرْتُ عَنْ يَمِينِي وَأَتَيْتُ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ»
✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a group of the Ashʿarīs to ask him for mounts. He said: “By Allah, I will not give you mounts, and I have nothing to give you as mounts.” Then we waited as long as Allah willed, and camels were brought to him, and he ordered for us three herds. When we left, some of us said to others: “May Allah not bless us; we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ask him for mounts, and he swore not to give us mounts, then he gave us mounts.” Abū Mūsā said: So we came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him, and he said: “I did not give you mounts; rather Allah gave you mounts. Indeed, by Allah, if Allah wills, I do not swear an oath and then see something else better than it except that I expiate my oath and do what is better.”

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَرَأَيْتَ ابْنَ عَمٍّ آتِيهِ أَسْأَلُهُ فَلَا يُعْطِينِي وَلَا يَصِلُنِي ثُمَّ يَحْتَاجُ إِلَيَّ فَيَأْتِينِي فَيَسْأَلُنِي وَقَدْ حَلَفْتُ أَلَّا أُعْطِيَهُ وَلَا أَصِلُهُ «فَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ آتِيَ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ وَأُكَفِّرَ عَنْ يَمِينِي»
✧ I said: “O Messenger of Allah, what do you think about a cousin of mine whom I go to and ask, but he does not give me or maintain ties with me. Then he needs me and comes to ask me, and I have sworn not to give him or maintain ties with him.” He commanded me to do what is better and to expiate for my oath.

And whoever's emigration is to a worldly gain he attains or a woman he marries, his emigration is to that for which he emigrated.”

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ يَمْكُثُ عِنْدَ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ فَيَشْرَبُ عِنْدَهَا عَسَلًا فَتَوَاصَيْتُ أَنَا وَحَفْصَةُ أَنَّ أَيَّتَنَا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَلْتَقُلْ إِنِّي أَجِدُ مِنْكَ رِيحَ مَغَافِيرَ أَكَلْتَ مَغَافِيرَ فَدَخَلَ عَلَى إِحْدَاهُمَا فَقَالَتْ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ «لَا بَلْ شَرِبْتُ عَسَلًا عِنْدَ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ وَلَنْ أَعُودَ لَهُ» فَنَزَلَتْ {يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ لِمَ تُحَرِّمُ مَا أَحَلَّ اللهُ لَكَ تَبْتَغِي مَرْضَاةَ أَزْوَاجِكَ} {إِنْ تَتُوبَا إِلَى اللهِ} [التحريم 4] لِعَائِشَةَ وَحَفْصَةَ { وَإِذْ أَسَرَّ النَّبِيُّ إِلَى بَعْضِ أَزْوَاجِهِ حَدِيثًا} [التحريم 3] لِقَوْلِهِ «بَلْ شَرِبْتُ عَسَلًا»
✧ The Prophet ﷺ used to stay with Zaynab bt. Jahsh and drink honey at her place. So Hafsah and I agreed that whichever of us the Prophet ﷺ visited should say: 'I detect on you the smell of maghafir; have you eaten maghafir?' He visited one of them, and she said that to him. He said: 'No, rather I drank honey at Zaynab bt. Jahsh's, and I will not do it again.' Then it was revealed: {O Prophet, why do you prohibit what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives?} {If you two repent to Allah} [al-Tahrim 4] for 'A'ishah and Hafsah, and {And when the Prophet confided to one of his wives a statement} [al-Tahrim 3] regarding his saying: 'Rather, I drank honey.'”

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The best of you are my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them, then those who follow them.” I do not know whether he mentioned two generations after or three. Then he mentioned a people who betray and are not trusted, who testify though they are not asked to testify, who make vows but do not fulfill them, and among whom obesity appears.

✧ The Prophet ﷺ passed by a man while he was circumambulating the Kaʿbah, led by a person with a nose ring in his nose. The Prophet ﷺ cut it with his hand, then commanded him to lead him by his hand. Ibn Jurayj said: Sulayman informed me that Tawus informed him from Ibn Abbas that the Prophet ﷺ passed by a man while he was circumambulating the Kaʿbah, with his hand tied to another person by a strap, a thread, or something else. The Prophet ﷺ cut it with his hand, then said, “Lead him by his hand.”

✧ that he said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when his repentance was accepted: O Messenger of Allah, I divest myself of my wealth as charity to Allah and His Messenger. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Keep some of your wealth, for it is better for you." Abu 'Abd al-Rahman said to us: It seems that al-Zuhri heard this hadith from 'Abd Allah b. Ka'b b. Malik and heard it from 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Abd Allah from him in the long hadith.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Keep some of your wealth, for it is better for you." I said: Then I will keep my share which is in Khaybar. An abridgement from the hadith of repentance.

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ مِنْ تَوْبَتِي أَنْ أَنْخَلِعَ مِنْ مَالِي صَدَقَةً إِلَى اللهِ وَإِلَى رَسُولِهِ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَمْسِكْ عَلَيْكَ بَعْضَ مَالِكَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ» قُلْتُ فَإِنِّي أَمْسِكُ سَهْمِي الَّذِي بِخَيْبَرَ
✧ from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the expedition of Tabuk, he said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, indeed part of my repentance is that I divest myself of my wealth as charity to Allah and to His Messenger. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Keep some of your wealth, for it is better for you." I said: Then I will keep my share which is in Khaybar.

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ خَيْبَرَ فَلَمْ نَغْنَمْ إِلَّا الْأَمْوَالَ الْمَتَاعَ وَالثِّيَابَ فَأَهْدَى رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي الضَّبِيبِ يُقَالُ لَهُ رِفَاعَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ غُلَامًا أَسْوَدَ يُقَالُ لَهُ مِدْعَمٌ فَتَوَجَّهَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى وَادِي الْقُرَى حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِوَادِي الْقُرَى بَيْنَمَا مِدْعَمٌ يَحُطُّ رَحْلَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِذْ جَاءَهُ سَهْمٌ فَأَصَابَهُ فَقَتَلَهُ فَقَالَ النَّاسُ هَنِيئًا لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ كَلَّا وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ إِنَّ الشَّمْلَةَ الَّتِي أَخَذَ يَوْمَ خَيْبَرَ مِنَ الْمَغَانِمِ لَمْ تُصِبْهَا الْمَقَاسِمُ لَتَشْتَعِلُ عَلَيْهِ نَارًا فَلَمَّا سَمِعَ النَّاسُ ذَلِكَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ بِشِرَاكٍ أَوْ شِرَاكَيْنِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «شِرَاكٌ أَوْ شِرَاكَانِ مِنْ نَارٍ»
✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Khaybar, and we did not gain any spoils except wealth, goods, and clothes. A man from Banu al-Dabib, called Rifa'ah b. Zayd, gave the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a black slave called Mid'am. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ headed towards Wadi al-Qura, and when we were at Wadi al-Qura, while Mid'am was unloading the saddle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, an arrow came and struck him, killing him. The people said: Congratulations to him, Paradise! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: No, by the One in whose hand is my soul, the cloak that he took on the day of Khaybar from the spoils before they were distributed will blaze upon him as fire. When the people heard that, a man brought a sandal strap or two sandal straps to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "A sandal strap or two sandal straps of fire."

✧ The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever swears an oath and says, 'If Allah wills,' then he has the choice: if he wishes, he may proceed, and if he wishes, he may abandon it."

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «وَقَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ» لَأَطُوفَنَّ اللَّيْلَةَ عَلَى تِسْعِينَ امْرَأَةً كُلُّهُنَّ تَأْتِي بِفَارِسٍ يُجَاهِدُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ صَاحِبُهُ قُلْ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ فَلَمْ يَقُلْ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ فَطَافَ عَلَيْهِنَّ جَمِيعًا فَلَمْ تَحْمِلْ مِنْهُنَّ إِلَّا امْرَأَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ جَاءَتْ بِشِقِّ رَجُلٍ وَأَيْمُ الَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَوْ قَالَ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ لَجَاهَدُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فُرْسَانًا أَجْمَعُونَ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Sulayman b. Dawud said: 'I will certainly go around to ninety women tonight, each of whom will bring a horseman who fights in the cause of Allah.' His companion said to him: 'Say, "If Allah wills."' But he did not say, 'If Allah wills.' Then he went around to all of them, and none of them conceived except one woman who gave birth to half a man. By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, if he had said, 'If Allah wills,' they would all have fought in the cause of Allah as horsemen."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The expiation of a vow is the expiation of an oath."
