✧ He asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about hunting. He said: "When you send your trained dog, mention the name of Allah. If you catch up with it before it kills, then slaughter and mention the name of Allah. If you catch up with it after it has killed but has not eaten, then eat, for it has held it for you. If you find that it has eaten from it, then do not eat any of it, for it has held it for itself. If your dog mixes with other dogs and they kill but do not eat, then do not eat any of it, for you do not know which one killed it."

He said: "If you strike it with its sharp edge, then eat, and if you strike it with its broad side, then it is a waqidh (killed by a blunt blow)." I asked him about the dog. He said: "If you send your dog and it seizes the game and does not eat, then eat, for its seizure is its slaughter. If there is another dog with your dog and you fear that it seized it along with your dog and killed it, then do not eat, for you have mentioned the name of Allah only over your dog and not over the other."

Then they got hungry again and a man slaughtered three camels, then they got hungry and a man slaughtered three camels, then they got hungry and a man slaughtered three camels, then they got hungry and a man slaughtered three camels. Then Abu 'Ubaidah told him not to do that." (One of the narrators) Sufyan said: "Abu Az-Zubair said, narrating from Jabir: "We asked the Prophet and he said: 'Do you have anything left of it?"' he said; "We took out, such-and -such an amount of a fat from its (the whale's) eyes, and four men could fit into its eye socket. Abu 'Ubaidah had a sack of dates and he used to give them out by the handful, then he started to give one date at a time, and when we ran out of dates it became very difficult for us." ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us with Abu 'Ubaydah on a military expedition. Our provisions ran out, and we passed by a fish that the sea had thrown out. We wanted to eat from it, but Abu 'Ubaydah forbade us. Then he said, "We are the messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and in the path of Allah, so eat." So we ate from it for several days. When we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him, he said, "If any of it remains with you, send some to us."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us with Abu 'Ubaydah, and we were three hundred and some odd, and he provided us with a sack of dates, giving us a handful at a time. When we had traveled some distance, he gave us one date at a time, until we would suck on it as a baby sucks, and drink water with it. When we lost it, we felt its loss, until we would beat the leaves off trees with our sticks and then drink water over them, so we were called the Army of Leaves. Then we took the coastal route, and there was a creature like a huge sand dune called anbar (sperm whale). Abu 'Ubaydah said, "It is dead meat, do not eat it." Then he said, "We are the army of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and in the path of Allah, and we are in dire need. Eat in the name of Allah." So we ate from it and made strips of dried meat from it. He said, "Thirteen men sat in the socket of its eye." He said, "Abu 'Ubaydah took one of its ribs and set it up, and the largest camel of the people passed under it." When we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, "What delayed you?" We said, "We were pursuing the caravans of Quraysh," and we told him about the creature. He said, "That was provision Allah provided for you. Do you have any of it with you?" We said, "Yes."
