✧ The beginning of the Anṣār's conversion to Islam [The Messenger of Allah and a group of the Khazraj at al-ʿAqabah] Ibn Isḥāq said: When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, willed to make His religion manifest, to honor His Prophet ﷺ, and to fulfill His promise to him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out in the season in which the band of the Anṣār met him, and he presented himself to the tribes of the Arabs, as he used to do in every season. While he was at al-ʿAqabah, he met a group of the Khazraj for whom Allah willed good. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah narrated to me, from elders of his people, who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met them, he said to them, "Who are you?" They said, "A band from the Khazraj." He said, "Are you clients of the Jews?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Will you not sit down so that I may speak with you?" They said, "Certainly." So they sat with him, and he called them to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, presented Islam to them, and recited the Qur'an to them. He said: It was among the things that Allah did for them in Islam that the Jews were with them in their lands, and they were people of a Scripture and knowledge, while they themselves were people of polytheism and idolaters. They had raided them in their lands, and whenever something occurred between them, they would say to them, "A prophet is now to be sent, whose time has drawn near. We shall follow him and kill you with him, as ʿĀd and Iram were killed." So when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to that band and called them to Allah, some of them said to others, "O people, know by Allah that he is the prophet with whom the Jews have threatened you, so do not let them get to him before you." They responded to what he called them to, believing him and accepting what he presented to them of Islam. They said, "We have left our people, and no people have between them such enmity and evil as exists between them. Perhaps Allah will unite them through you. We shall go to them and call them to your affair, and present to them this religion which we have accepted from you. If Allah unites them upon it, then no man will be mightier than you." Then they departed from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, returning to their lands, having believed and affirmed.

✧ The Messenger's covenant with those who gave the pledge at al-ʿAqabah Ibn Isḥāq said: Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb narrated to me, from (Abī) Marthad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Yazanī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿUsaylah al-Ṣanābiḥī, from ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit, who said: I was among those who were present at the first al-ʿAqabah, and we were twelve men, and we pledged allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ with the pledge of the women, and that was before war was made obligatory, upon the condition that we should not associate anything with God, and should not steal, and should not commit fornication, and should not kill our children, and should not bring a slander that we forge between our hands and our feet, and should not disobey him in what is right. If you fulfill, then Paradise is yours; and if you commit any of that, then your affair is left to God, the Mighty and Majestic: if He wills, He punishes, and if He wills, He forgives. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī mentioned, from ʿĀʾidh Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Khawlānī Abū Idrīs, that ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit narrated to him that he said: We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ on the night of the first al-ʿAqabah upon the condition that we should not associate anything with God, and should not steal, and should not commit fornication, and should not kill our children, and should not bring a slander that we forge between our hands and our feet, and should not disobey him in what is right. If you fulfill, then Paradise is yours; and if you commit any of that and are taken to task for it in this world, then that is an expiation for it, and if it is concealed for you until the Day of Resurrection, then your affair is left to God, the Mighty and Majestic: if He wills, He punishes, and if He wills, He forgives.

✧ [The Messenger's sending of Muṣʿab with the delegation of al-ʿAqabah] Ibn Isḥāq said: When the people departed from him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent with them Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr b. Hāshim b. ʿAbd Manāf b. ʿAbd al-Dār b. Quṣayy, and ordered him to recite the Qur'an to them, teach them Islam, and instruct them in the religion. He was called 'the reciter' in Madinah: Muṣʿab. His lodging was with Asʿad b. Zurārah b. ʿUdas, Abū Umāmah. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah narrated to me that he used to lead them in prayer, because the Aws and the Khazraj disliked that some of them should lead others in prayer.

✧ The first Friday prayer established in Madinah [Asʿad b. Zurārah and the establishment of the first Friday prayer in Madinah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Abī Umāmah b. Sahl b. Ḥunayf narrated to me, from his father Abū Umāmah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Kaʿb b. Mālik, who said: I was the guide of my father, Kaʿb b. Mālik, when he lost his sight. When I took him out to the Friday prayer and he heard the call to prayer for it, he would invoke blessings upon Abū Umāmah, Asʿad b. Zurārah. He said: He continued doing that for a while: he would not hear the call to prayer for the Friday prayer without invoking blessings upon him and asking forgiveness for him. He said: I said to myself: By God, this is a shortcoming on my part, that I should not ask him why, when he heard the call to prayer for the Friday prayer, he invoked blessings upon Abū Umāmah Asʿad b. Zurārah. He said: So I took him out on a Friday as I used to take him out, and when he heard the call to prayer for the Friday prayer, he invoked blessings upon him and asked forgiveness for him. He said: I said to him: Father, why is it that when you hear the call to prayer for the Friday prayer, you invoke blessings upon Abū Umāmah? He said: He said: My son, he was the first to lead us in the Friday prayer in Madinah, in Hazm al-Nabīt, from the ḥarrah of Banū Bayāḍah, in a place called Naqīʿ al-Khaḍamāt. He said: I said: How many were you that day? He said: Forty men.

✧ [Asʿad b. Zurārah and Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr, and the conversion of Saʿd b. Muʿādh and Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Mughīrah b. Muʿayqib and ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm narrated to me that Asʿad b. Zurārah went out with Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr, intending to take him to the abode of the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal and the abode of the Banū Ẓafar; and Saʿd b. Muʿādh b. al-Nuʿmān b. Imriʾ al-Qays b. Zayd b. ʿAbd al-Ashhal was the son of Asʿad b. Zurārah's maternal aunt. He entered with him into one of the walled gardens of the Banū Ẓafar. Ibn Hishām said: The name of Ẓafar was Kaʿb b. al-Ḥārith b. al-Khazraj b. ʿAmr b. Mālik b. al-Aws. They said: At a well called Biʾr Maraq, and they sat in the garden. Men of those who had accepted Islam gathered around them, while Saʿd b. Muʿādh and Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr were that day the chiefs of their people from the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, and both were polytheists following the religion of their people. When they heard of them, Saʿd b. Muʿādh said to Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr: May you have no father, go to these two men who have come to our abodes to make fools of our weak ones. Deter them and forbid them from coming to our abodes, for were it not that Asʿad b. Zurārah is of me as you know—he is the son of my maternal aunt—I would spare you that, and I find no way to proceed against him. He said: So Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr took his spear and then went toward them. When Asʿad b. Zurārah saw him, he said to Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr: This is the chief of his people who has come to you; be truthful to Allah concerning him. Muṣʿab said: If he sits, I will speak with him. He said: He stood over them reviling them and said: What has brought you two to us, making fools of our weak ones? Withdraw from us if you have any need of your own selves. Muṣʿab said to him: Will you sit and listen? If you approve of a matter, you may accept it; and if you dislike it, what you dislike will be withheld from you. He said: You have been fair. Then he planted his spear in the ground and sat with them. Muṣʿab spoke to him about Islam and recited the Quran to him. They said—concerning what is mentioned of the two of them: By Allah, we recognized Islam in his face before he spoke, in its radiance and ease. Then he said: How excellent and beautiful is this speech. What do you do when you want to enter this religion? They said to him: You bathe and purify yourself and purify your two garments, then you bear witness to the testimony of truth, then you pray. So he rose, bathed, purified his two garments, bore witness to the testimony of truth, then stood and bowed twice. Then he said to them: Behind me is a man who, if he follows you two, none of his people will lag behind him. I shall send him to you now—Saʿd b. Muʿādh. Then he took his spear and departed to Saʿd and his people while they were sitting in their assembly. When Saʿd b. Muʿādh saw him approaching, he said: I swear by Allah, Usayd has come to you with a different face from the one with which he left you. When he stood before the assembly, Saʿd said to him: What did you do? He said: I spoke with the two men. By Allah, I saw no harm in them, and I forbade them. They said: We will do whatever you like. I have also been told that the Banū Ḥārithah have gone out to Asʿad b. Zurārah to kill him, because they know that he is your maternal aunt's son, in order to disgrace you. He said: Saʿd rose angry and hastening, fearing what had been mentioned to him about the Banū Ḥārithah, and took the spear from his hand. Then he said: By Allah, I do not think you have availed anything. Then he went out to the two of them. When Saʿd saw the two of them at ease, Saʿd knew that Usayd had only wanted him to hear from them. He stood over them reviling them and said to Asʿad b. Zurārah: O Abū Umāmah, by Allah, were it not for the kinship between me and you, you would not have sought this from me. Would you come upon us in our abodes with what we dislike? And Asʿad b. Zurārah had said to Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr: O Muṣʿab, by Allah, the chief of those behind him of his people has come to you. If he follows you, not two of them will lag behind you. He said: Muṣʿab said to him: Will you sit and listen? If you approve of a matter and desire it, you may accept it; and if you dislike it, we will remove from you what you dislike. Saʿd said: You have been fair. Then he planted the spear in the ground and sat. He presented Islam to him and recited the Quran to him. They said: By Allah, we recognized Islam in his face before he spoke, because of its radiance and ease. Then he said to them: How do you do when you have submitted and entered this religion? They said: You bathe and purify yourself and purify your two garments, then you bear witness to the testimony of truth, then you pray two rakʿahs. He said: So he rose, bathed, purified his two garments, bore witness to the testimony of truth, then bowed twice. Then he took his spear and came heading to the assembly of his people, with Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr with him. He said: When his people saw him approaching, they said: We swear by Allah, Saʿd has returned to you with a different face from the one with which he left you. When he stood before them, he said: O Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, how do you regard my position among you? They said: You are our chief, the most competent of us, the best of us in judgment, and the most fortunate of us in outcome. He said: Then the speech of your men and your women is forbidden to me until you believe in Allah and His Messenger. They said: By Allah, no man or woman remained in the abode of the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal by evening except as a Muslim, male and female. Asʿad and Muṣʿab returned to the dwelling of Asʿad b. Zurārah, and he stayed with him calling people to Islam, until no abode remained among the dwellings of the Anṣār but that there were Muslim men and women in it, except for what was of the abode of the Banū Umayyah b. Zayd, Khaṭmah, Wāʾil, and Wāqif—and those are Aws Allāh, and they are of the Aws b. Ḥārithah. That was because among them was Abū Qays b. al-Aslat, and he was Ṣayfī, a poet and leader to them, whom they listened to and obeyed, and he held them back from Islam. He remained thus until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ emigrated to Madinah, and Badr, Uḥud, and the Trench had passed. He said concerning what he saw of Islam and what people differed about in its affair: The people's affairs came upon them suddenly; the difficult is joined with the easy. O people, since we have gone astray, make easy for us the known path. Were it not for our Lord, we would be Jews, and the religion of the Jews is not of any proper kind. Were it not for our Lord, we would be Christians with the monks on Mount al-Jalīl. But we were created, when created, as ḥanīf, our religion apart from every other. We drive the sacrificial animals, they walk swiftly subdued, with uncovered shoulders in their coverings. Ibn Hishām said: A man of the Anṣār or of Khuzāʿah recited to me his saying: Were it not for our Lord, and his saying: Were it not for our Lord, and his saying: With uncovered shoulders in their coverings.

✧ The Affair of the Second al-ʿAqabah [Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr and the Second al-ʿAqabah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr returned to Makkah, and those of the Anṣār who had become Muslims went forth to the pilgrimage season with the pilgrims of their people from the people of polytheism, until they arrived in Makkah. They promised the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at al-ʿAqabah, in the middle of the days of al-Tashrīq, when Allah intended for them what He intended of His honor for them, and victory for His Prophet, and the strengthening of Islam and its people, and the abasement of polytheism and its people.

✧ Al-Barāʾ b. Maʿrūr and his prayer toward the Kaʿbah Ibn Isḥāq said: Maʿbad b. Kaʿb b. Mālik b. Abī Kaʿb b. al-Qayn, brother of the Banū Salimah, related to me that his brother ʿAbd Allāh b. Kaʿb—who was among the most learned of the Anṣār—related to him that his father Kaʿb related to him, and Kaʿb was among those who attended al-ʿAqabah and pledged allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ there. He said: We set out among the pilgrims of our people from the polytheists, having already prayed and gained understanding, and with us was al-Barāʾ b. Maʿrūr, our chief and elder. When we turned to our journey and departed from Madinah, al-Barāʾ said to us: 'O you people, I have formed an opinion. By God, I do not know whether you will agree with me about it or not.' He said: We said, 'And what is that?' He said, 'I have decided not to turn my back on this House'—meaning the Kaʿbah—'and to pray toward it.' He said: So we said, 'By God, it has not reached us that our Prophet ﷺ prays except toward Syria, and we do not wish to oppose him.' He said: Then he said, 'I shall certainly pray toward it.' He said: So we said to him, 'But we will not do so.' He said: So when the time for prayer came, we prayed toward Syria, and he prayed toward the Kaʿbah, until we arrived in Makkah. He said: We had reproached him for what he did, but he refused to do anything but persist in that. When we arrived in Makkah, he said to me: 'O son of my brother, come with us to the Messenger of God ﷺ so that we may ask him about what I did during this journey of mine, for by God, something about it has fallen into my soul, because of the opposition I saw from you against me in it.' He said: So we went out asking about the Messenger of God ﷺ, and we did not know him, nor had we seen him before that. Then we met a man from the people of Makkah, and we asked him about the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said, 'Do you two know him?' We said, 'No.' He said, 'Do you two know al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, his paternal uncle?' He said: We said, 'Yes'—he said: And we knew al-ʿAbbās; he used to keep coming to us as a merchant—he said: 'When you two enter the mosque, he is the man sitting with al-ʿAbbās.' He said: So we entered the mosque, and there was al-ʿAbbās sitting, and the Messenger of God ﷺ sitting with him. We greeted, then sat down near him. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to al-ʿAbbās: 'Do you know these two men, O Abū al-Faḍl?' He said, 'Yes, this is al-Barāʾ b. Maʿrūr, chief of his people, and this is Kaʿb b. Mālik.' He said: By God, I shall never forget the saying of the Messenger of God ﷺ: 'The poet?' He said, 'Yes.' He said: Then al-Barāʾ b. Maʿrūr said to him: 'O Prophet of God, I set out on this journey of mine, and God has guided me to Islam. I decided not to turn my back on this House, so I prayed toward it, and my companions opposed me in that, until something about it fell into my soul. So what do you think, O Messenger of God?' He said: 'You were upon a qiblah, had you remained patient upon it.' He said: So al-Barāʾ returned to the qiblah of the Messenger of God ﷺ and prayed with us toward Syria. He said: His family claim that he prayed toward the Kaʿbah until he died, but that is not as they said; we know better about it than they. Ibn Hishām said: And ʿAwn b. Ayyūb al-Anṣārī said: Among us is the one who prayed, the first of people, facing the Kaʿbah of the Merciful, among the sacred rites— meaning al-Barāʾ b. Maʿrūr. This verse is in a poem of his.

✧ The Conversion of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr Ibn Isḥāq said: Maʿbad b. Kaʿb related to me that his brother ʿAbd Allāh b. Kaʿb related to him that his father Kaʿb b. Mālik related to him. Kaʿb said: Then we went out to the pilgrimage and made an appointment with the Messenger of God ﷺ at al-ʿAqabah in the middle of the days of al-tashrīq. He said: When we had finished the pilgrimage, and it was the night for which we had made an appointment with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and with us was ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Ḥarām, or Jābir—a chief among our chiefs and a noble among our nobles—we took him with us, and we were concealing our affair from those of our people who were with us from the polytheists. We spoke to him and said to him: O Abā Jābir, you are a chief among our chiefs and a noble among our nobles, and we would desire for you to be kept from what you are in, lest you become firewood for the Fire tomorrow. Then we called him to Islam and informed him of the appointment of the Messenger of God ﷺ with us at al-ʿAqabah. He said: So he became a Muslim and was present with us at al-ʿAqabah, and he was a naqīb. He said: We slept that night with our people in our camps, until when a third of the night had passed we went out from our camps to the appointment with the Messenger of God ﷺ, creeping stealthily like sand-grouse, hiding ourselves, until we gathered in the mountain pass at al-ʿAqabah. We were seventy-three men, and with us were two women of our women: Nusaybah bt. Kaʿb, Umm ʿUmārah, one of the women of Banū Māzin b. al-Najjār, and Asmāʾ bt. ʿAmr b. ʿAdī b. Nābī, one of the women of Banū Salamah, and she is Umm Manīʿ.

✧ [Al-ʿAbbās securing the matter for the Prophet ﷺ ] He said: We gathered in the mountain pass, waiting for the Messenger of God ﷺ, until he came to us, and with him was his uncle al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, who was on that day upon the religion of his people, except that he loved to attend to the matter of his brother's son and to secure it for him. When he sat down, the first to speak was al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and he said: O company of al-Khazraj—he said: The Arabs used to call this tribe of the Anṣār only al-Khazraj, both its Khazraj and its Aws—: Muḥammad is of us, as you have known, and we have protected him from our people, from those who hold the same opinion of him as we do. So he is in honor among his people and in protection in his land. And he has refused anything but turning aside to you and joining you. So if you consider that you will fulfill for him what you have called him to, and protect him from those who oppose him, then you are responsible for what you have undertaken. But if you consider that you will surrender him and forsake him after he has gone out to you, then from now leave him, for he is in honor and protection among his people and in his land. He said: We said to him: We have heard what you said, so speak, O Messenger of God, and take for yourself and for your Lord what you love.

✧ [The Messenger's covenant (peace and prayers be upon him) upon the Anṣār] He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke. He recited the Quran, called to Allah, and encouraged Islam. Then he said: "I make a covenant with you that you will protect me from what you protect your women and children from." He said: Al-Barāʾ b. Maʿrūr took his hand and said: "Yes, by the One who sent you with the truth as a prophet, we will indeed protect you from what we protect our waists from. So accept our pledge, O Messenger of Allah. For we, by Allah, are sons of war and people of the ring; we inherited it great one after great one." He said: Then Abū al-Haytham b. al-Tayyihān interrupted the speech while al-Barāʾ was talking to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, between us and the men there are cords, and we will cut them—meaning the Jews. Is it possible that if we do that and then Allah makes you victorious, you would return to your people and leave us?" He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled, then said: "Nay, blood is blood, and destruction is destruction. I am of you and you are of me. I fight whom you fight, and I make peace with whom you make peace with." Ibn Hishām said: And he said: "destruction is destruction"—meaning sanctity; that is, my protection is your protection and my sanctity is your sanctity. Kaʿb b. Mālik said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said: "Bring out to me twelve representatives from among you, to be responsible for their people in what concerns them." So they brought out twelve representatives from among them, nine from the Khazraj and three from the Aws.

✧ [Kaʿb's poetry on enumerating the naqībs] Ibn Hishām said: The scholars count among them Abū al-Haytham b. al-Tayyihān, and they do not count Rifāʿah. Kaʿb b. Mālik said, mentioning them, in what Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī recited to me:: Convey to Ubayy that his opinion has failed, and the morning of the mountain pass has come, and ruin is certain. Allah has refused what your soul has made you wish; indeed He, over the affair of people, is watching and listening. And convey to Abū Sufyān that there has appeared to us, with Aḥmad, a shining light from Allah's guidance. So do not desire the gathering of a matter you want; and incite and assemble all that you are assembling. And before you, know that the breaking of our covenant was refused to you by the band, when they followed one another. Al-Barāʾ refused it, and Ibn ʿAmr, both of them, and Asʿad refuses it to you, and Rāfiʿ; and Saʿd al-Sāʿidī refused it, and Mundhir — for your nose, if you attempt that, is cut off. And Ibn Rabīʿ, if you seek his pact, is not one to hand it over; let no coveter covet there. And also, Ibn Rawāḥah will not give it to you, and his violation of it, apart from him, is deadly poison. In fidelity to it, and al-Qawqalī b. Ṣāmit, is in ample sufficiency from what you attempt, O Yāfiʿ. Abū Haytham also is faithful to the like of it, in fulfillment of what he gave of the covenant, abasing. And Ibn Ḥuḍayr, if you wish, is not to be hoped for; so are you desisting from the foolishness of error? And Saʿd, the brother of ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, for he is a violent defender of what you attempt in the matter, forbidding. Those are stars; from them there does not fail you, against you, an ill omen rising in the darkness of night. Thus Kaʿb mentioned among them Abū al-Haytham b. al-Tayyihān and did not mention Rifāʿah. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to the naqībs: "You are, over your people, guarantors for what is in them, like the guarantee of the disciples for ʿĪsā b. Maryam ﷺ, and I am guarantor over my people" — meaning the Muslims. They said: "Yes."

✧ [The speech of al-ʿAbbās b. ʿUbādah among the Khazraj before the pledge] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah narrated to me that when the people gathered for the pledge to the Messenger of God ﷺ, al-ʿAbbās b. ʿUbādah b. Naḍlah al-Anṣārī, brother of the Banū Sālim b. ʿAwf, said: "O assembly of the Khazraj, do you know on what basis you are pledging allegiance to this man?" They said: "Yes." He said: "You are pledging allegiance to him on war against the red and the black of mankind. If you think that when your wealth is exhausted as a calamity and your nobles are killed you will surrender him, then from now—for by God, if you do that, it is the disgrace of this world and the hereafter. But if you think that you will fulfill for him what you have summoned him to, despite the exhaustion of wealth and the killing of nobles, then take him, for by God, it is the best of this world and the hereafter." They said: "We take him on the calamity of wealth and the killing of nobles. What is for us in that, O Messenger of God, if we fulfill that?" He said: "Paradise." They said: "Stretch out your hand." He stretched out his hand and they pledged allegiance to him. As for ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah, he said: By God, al-ʿAbbās said that only to bind the covenant firmly for the Messenger of God ﷺ upon their necks. As for ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr, he said: al-ʿAbbās said that only to delay the people that night, hoping that ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl would attend it and thus strengthen the matter of the people. God knows best which of the two it was. [The lineage of Salūl] Ibn Hishām said: Salūl is a woman from Khuzāʿah, the mother of Ubayy b. Mālik b. al-Ḥārith.

He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: We have not been commanded with that, but return to your camps. He said: So we returned to our resting places, and we slept on them until morning.

✧ [Quraysh's going forth to the Anṣār concerning the matter of the pledge of allegiance] (He said): When morning came, the notables of Quraysh came to us in the morning, until they reached us in our dwellings, and said: "O company of Khazraj, it has reached us that you have come to this companion of ours to take him out from among us and to give him allegiance upon waging war against us. By God, there is no clan among the Arabs more hateful to us than you, that war should break out between us and them." (He said): Then those of our people who were there from the polytheists started swearing by God that nothing of this had happened, and that they did not know of it. (He said): And they spoke the truth; they did not know of it. (He said): And some of us looked at one another. (He said): Then the people arose, among them al-Ḥārith b. Hishām b. al-Mughīrah al-Makhzūmī, and he had on two new sandals of his. (He said): I said a word to him—as if I wanted to involve the people in what they had said: "O Abū Jābir, can you not, since you are a chief among our chiefs, acquire the like of the sandals of this young man of Quraysh?" (He said): Al-Ḥārith heard it, so he took them off his feet and threw them to me, and said: "By God, you shall put them on." (He said): He says: Abū Jābir said: "Enough! By God, you have angered the young man; return his sandals to him." (He said): I said: "By God, I will not return them. It is a good omen, by God; if the omen proves true, I will despoil him." Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr narrated to me that they came to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl and said to him the like of what Kaʿb said, and he said to them: "By God, this matter is grave. My people would not have acted on such a thing without my knowledge, and I did not know that it had happened." (He said): So they turned away from him.

✧ [The deliverance of Ibn ʿUbādah from Quraysh’s captivity, and the poetry said about that] Saʿd said: “By God, while I was in their hands, a group of Quraysh came upon me, among them a bright, fair-complexioned man, tall and handsome. I said to myself: ‘If there is any good in any of these people, it is in this one.’ When he drew near to me, he raised his hand and struck me a severe blow. Then I said to myself: ‘No, by God, there is no good in them after this.’ By God, while I was in their hands dragging me along, a man from among those with them leaned towards me and said: ‘Woe to you! Is there not between you and any one of Quraysh a pact of protection or a covenant?’ I said: ‘Yes, by God, I used to grant protection to the trade of Jubayr b. Muṭʿim b. ʿAdī b. Nawfal b. ʿAbd Manāf, and I would defend them from anyone who sought to wrong them in my lands; and likewise for al-Ḥārith b. Ḥarb b. Umayyah b. ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf.’ He said: ‘Woe to you! Cry out the names of the two men, and mention what is between you and them.’ I did so, and that man went out to the two of them and found them in the mosque near the Kaʿbah. He said to them: ‘A man of the Khazraj is now being beaten in al-Abṭaḥ, crying out to you two, and claiming that there is a pact of protection between him and you.’ They said: ‘Who is he?’ He said: ‘Saʿd b. ʿUbādah.’ They said: ‘He has spoken truly, by God; he used to grant protection to our trade and prevent them from being wronged in his land.’ So the two of them came and delivered Saʿd from their hands, and he went his way. The one who struck Saʿd was Suhayl b. ʿAmr, the brother of the Banū ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy.” Ibn Hishām said: “The man who leaned towards him was Abū al-Bakhtarī b. Hishām.” Ibn Isḥāq said: “The first poetry composed about the Hijrah were two verses spoken by Ḍirār b. al-Khaṭṭāb b. Mirdās, brother of the Banū Muḥārib b. Fihr: “You overtook Saʿd by force and seized him; / It would have been a cure had you overtaken Mundhir. / Had you got him, his wounds would have been avenged there; / And he was deserving of being humiliated and left unavenged.” Ibn Hishām said: “It is also related: ‘And he was worthy to be humiliated and left unavenged.’” Ibn Isḥāq said: “Ḥassān b. Thābit answered him regarding those two verses, saying: “You have no claim to Saʿd or the man Mundhir, / When the people’s mounts become lean and travel-worn. / Had it not been for Abū Wahb, elegies would have passed / Over the height of al-Barqāʾ, descending with bared heads. / Do you boast of linen when you have worn it, / Though the Nabataeans wear short cloaks? / Do not be like the drowsy one who dreams he is / In the village of Kisrā or the village of Qayṣar. / Do not be like the bereaved mother who was far removed / From bereavement, had her heart reflected. / Do not be like the ewe whose death came / Through the hollow of her own forelegs, and she was not content with a dug grave. / Do not be like the barker who advanced towards his own slaughter, / Not fearing an arrow from the quiver, fitted to the string. / For we and those who send odes towards us / Are like one who imports dates to the land of Khaybar.”

✧ The story of the idol of ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ [the enmity of ʿAmr’s people against his idol]. His son Muʿādh b. ʿAmr had been present at al-ʿAqabah and had pledged allegiance there to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ was a chief among the chiefs of the Banū Salamah and a noble among their nobles. He had set up in his house an idol of wood called Manāt, as the nobles used to do, taking it as a god which he venerated and purified. When the young men of the Banū Salamah embraced Islam—Muʿādh b. Jabal and his son Muʿādh b. ʿAmr (b. al-Jamūḥ) along with other young men of theirs who had embraced Islam and had been present at al-ʿAqabah—they would go out by night to that idol of ʿAmr, carry it off, and throw it into one of the pits of the Banū Salamah, in which were people’s refuse, upside down on its head. In the morning ʿAmr would say: “Woe to you! Who transgressed against this god of ours last night?” Then he would go out looking for it, and when he found it he would wash it, purify it, and perfume it, then say: “By Allah, if I knew who did this to you, I would disgrace him.” When evening came and ʿAmr slept, they would go back to it and do the same to it; he would go out in the morning and find it in the same state of harm as before, and he would wash it, purify it, and perfume it. Then they would again go to it at nightfall and do the same to it. When they had done this to him repeatedly, one day he took it out from where they had thrown it, washed it, purified it, and perfumed it, then brought his sword and hung it on it, saying: “By Allah, I do not know who does to you what you see; if there is any good in you, then defend yourself—here is the sword with you.” When evening came and ʿAmr slept, they went to it, took the sword from its neck, then took a dead dog and tied it to it with a rope, then threw it into a well of the wells of the Banū Salamah, in which was some of people’s refuse. Then ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ went out in the morning and did not find it in its place. [ʿAmr’s Islam and his poetry about that] He went out searching for it until he found it in that well, upside down, tied to a dead dog. When he saw it and beheld its state, and those of his people who had embraced Islam spoke to him, he embraced Islam by the mercy of Allah, and his Islam was good. Upon embracing Islam, and having come to know from Allah what he knew, he said—remembering that idol of his and what he had seen of its affair, and thanking Allah the Exalted who rescued him from the blindness and misguidance in which he had been: “By Allah, if you were a god, you would not be—you and a dog—in the middle of a well, tied together. Fie on the place where I find you as a god! Now we have searched you out and found the evil of your deceit. Praise be to Allah, the Most High, possessor of favors, the Giver, the Provider, the Judge of the Day of Judgment. It is He who rescued me before I could be in the darkness of a grave, pledged over—through Aḥmad, the guided one, the prophet, the one taken as a pledge.”

✧ The conditions of the pledge of allegiance at the last ʿAqabah Ibn Isḥāq said: The pledge of war, when God permitted His Messenger ﷺ to fight, included conditions other than his condition upon them at the first ʿAqabah. The first had been upon the pledge of women, because God Most High had not yet permitted His Messenger ﷺ to wage war. But when God permitted him to do so, and the Messenger of God ﷺ accepted their pledge at the last ʿAqabah to wage war against the red and the black, he took for himself and stipulated for the people on behalf of his Lord, and made for them, for fulfilling that, Paradise. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿUbādah b. al-Walīd b. ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit related to me, from his father al-Walīd, from his grandfather ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit—and he was one of the deputies—who said: We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ with the pledge of war—and ʿUbādah was among the twelve who had pledged allegiance to him at the first ʿAqabah upon the pledge of women—to listen and obey, in our hardship and our ease, in what we liked and what we disliked, and when preference was shown over us; and that we would not dispute the matter with its people; and that we would speak the truth wherever we were, not fearing in God the blame of any blamer.

Then he would say: 'Do you then testify that I am the messenger of God?' He would say: 'I do not hear.' So he began cutting him limb by limb until he died in his hand, without adding anything to that. When the Messenger of God ﷺ was mentioned to him, he believed in him and invoked blessings upon him, and when Musaylimah was mentioned to him, he said: 'I do not hear.' She went out to al-Yamāmah with the Muslims, and she engaged in the war herself until God killed Musaylimah, and she returned with twelve wounds, from stabs and strikes. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā b. Ḥibbān narrated this account to me from her, from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Ṣaʿṣaʿah. [Those from Banū Salimah who attended it: the names of those who were present at the second ʿAqabah among them] And from Banū Salimah: Umm Manīʿ—her name is Asmāʾ bt. ʿAmr b. ʿAdī b. Nābī b. ʿAmr b. Sawād b. Ghanm b. Kaʿb b. Salimah.
