The conversion of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr

Translation

✧ The Conversion of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr Ibn Isḥāq said: Maʿbad b. Kaʿb related to me that his brother ʿAbd Allāh b. Kaʿb related to him that his father Kaʿb b. Mālik related to him. Kaʿb said: Then we went out to the pilgrimage and made an appointment with the Messenger of God ﷺ at al-ʿAqabah in the middle of the days of al-tashrīq. He said: When we had finished the pilgrimage, and it was the night for which we had made an appointment with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and with us was ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Ḥarām, or Jābir—a chief among our chiefs and a noble among our nobles—we took him with us, and we were concealing our affair from those of our people who were with us from the polytheists. We spoke to him and said to him: O Abā Jābir, you are a chief among our chiefs and a noble among our nobles, and we would desire for you to be kept from what you are in, lest you become firewood for the Fire tomorrow. Then we called him to Islam and informed him of the appointment of the Messenger of God ﷺ with us at al-ʿAqabah. He said: So he became a Muslim and was present with us at al-ʿAqabah, and he was a naqīb. He said: We slept that night with our people in our camps, until when a third of the night had passed we went out from our camps to the appointment with the Messenger of God ﷺ, creeping stealthily like sand-grouse, hiding ourselves, until we gathered in the mountain pass at al-ʿAqabah. We were seventy-three men, and with us were two women of our women: Nusaybah bt. Kaʿb, Umm ʿUmārah, one of the women of Banū Māzin b. al-Najjār, and Asmāʾ bt. ʿAmr b. ʿAdī b. Nābī, one of the women of Banū Salamah, and she is Umm Manīʿ.
