✧ [The Messenger's offering himself to the Arabs at the seasons] Ibn Ishāq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was engaged in that matter of his: whenever the people gathered for him at the season, he would come to them and summon the tribes to Allah and to Islam, and offer himself to them, along with what he had brought from Allah of guidance and mercy. He did not hear of any newcomer arriving in Makkah from among the Arabs with a name and nobility but that he approached him, summoned him to Allah, and offered him what he had.

✧ [Suwayd b. Ṣāmit and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah al-Anṣārī, then al-Ẓafarī, narrated to me from elders of his people, who said: Suwayd b. Ṣāmit, brother of the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, came to Makkah as a pilgrim or performing ʿumrah. His people used to call him al-Kāmil (the Perfect) among themselves because of his toughness, his poetry, his nobility, and his lineage. He is the one who says: Alas, many a one you call a friend, and if you could see His speech in your absence, it would grieve you what he fabricates. His speech is like honey when he is present, But in absence it is a tale carried on the notch of the chest. His outward pleases you, but beneath his skin Is the slander of treachery that severs the sinews of the back. The eyes reveal to you what he conceals Of rancor and hatred with a sidelong glance. So feather me with good, for long have you plucked me; The best of patrons is one who feathers and does not pluck. He also says: He wagered with a man of the Banū Sulaym, then one of the Banū Ziʿb b. Mālik, a hundred she-camels before a priestess of the Arab soothsayers, and she ruled in his favor. He and the Sulamī departed from her, with no one else with them. When the road separated them, he said: “What about my due, O brother of the Banū Sulaym?” He said: “I will send it to you.” He said: “But who will guarantee me that if you are tempted by it?” He said: “I will.” He said: “No, by the One in whose hand is the soul of Suwayd, you shall not part from me until I receive my due.” So he seized him and threw him to the ground, then bound him with ropes, then took him to the abode of the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf. He remained with him until Sulaym sent him what was owed to him. He said about that: Do not reckon me, O son of Ziʿb b. Mālik, Like one you used to destroy and beguile in secret. You turned into an opponent when you were thrown down in might; Thus the resolute one turns the tables. I struck him under the left armpit, and he remained In every state with his cheek down low. In many poems that he used to recite. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached him when he heard of him, and called him to Allah and to Islam. Suwayd said to him: “Perhaps what you have is like what I have.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “And what do you have?” He said: “The scroll of Luqmān” — meaning the wisdom of Luqmān. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “Present it to me.” So he presented it to him. He said to him: “This is indeed fine speech, but what I have is better than this: a Qur’ān that Allah Almighty sent down upon me, which is guidance and light.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the Qur’ān to him and called him to Islam. He did not distance himself from it and said: “This is indeed fine speech.” Then he departed from him and came to Madinah to his people. He did not remain long before the Khazraj killed him. Some men of his people used to say: “We consider that he was killed while he was a Muslim.” His killing took place before the Day of Buʿāth.

✧ The conversion of Iyās b. Muʿādh and the story of Abū al-Ḥaysar Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Ḥuṣayn b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAmr b. Saʿd b. Muʿādh narrated to me, from Maḥmūd b. Labīd, who said: When Abū al-Ḥaysar Anas b. Rāfiʿ came to Makkah with a group of young men from Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, among them Iyās b. Muʿādh, seeking an alliance with Quraysh against their own people of the Khazraj, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard of them. He came to them and sat with them, and said: "Would you like something better than what you have come for?" They said: "And what is that?" He said: "I am the Messenger of Allah. He has sent me to His servants, calling them to worship Allah and not associate anything with Him, and He has sent down the Book to me." He said: Then he mentioned Islam to them and recited the Qurʾān to them. He said: Then Iyās b. Muʿādh, who was a young lad, said: "O my people, by Allah, this is better than what you have come for." He said: Then Abū al-Ḥaysar Anas b. Rāfiʿ took a handful of dust from the open ground and threw it in the face of Iyās b. Muʿādh, and said: "Leave us be. By my life, we have come for something other than this." He said: So Iyās fell silent, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose and left them. They returned to Madinah, and the battle of Buʿāth took place between the Aws and the Khazraj. He said: Then it was not long before Iyās b. Muʿādh died. Maḥmūd b. Labīd said: Someone from his people who was present at his death informed me that they kept hearing him declare the oneness of Allah, glorify Him, praise Him, and magnify Him until he died. They had no doubt that he died a Muslim, for he had taken Islam into his heart in that gathering when he heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what he heard.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ offering himself to the tribes [The Messenger offering himself to the Arabs at their gatherings] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to Makkah, while his people were more severe against him than they had ever been in opposing him and separating from his religion, except a few who were deemed weak among those who had believed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to offer himself at the gatherings, when they occurred, to the tribes of the Arabs, calling them to Allah and informing them that he was a prophet sent [by Allah], and asking them to believe him and protect him until Allah made clear to them what He had sent him with. Ibn Isḥāq said: One of our companions, whom I do not suspect, related to me from Zayd b. Aslam, from Rabīʿah b. ʿAbbād al-Dīlī – or someone who related to him Abū al-Zinād from him – Ibn Hishām said: Rabīʿah b. ʿAbbād. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥusayn b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbbās related to me, saying: I heard Rabīʿah b. ʿAbbād relating to my father, saying: I was a young boy with my father at Minā, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was standing at the encampments of the tribes of the Arabs, saying: "O Banī so-and-so, I am the Messenger of Allah to you, commanding you to worship Allah and not to associate anything with Him, and to cast off these rivals that you worship besides Him, and to believe in me, and trust me, and protect me until I make clear from Allah what He has sent me with." He said: And behind him was a cross-eyed, handsome man with two locks of hair, wearing an Adanite robe. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his words and what he called them to, that man said: "O Banī so-and-so, this man only calls you to strip al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā from your necks, and your allies from the jinn of Banī Mālik b. Uqaysh, to what he has brought of innovation and error; so do not obey him, and do not listen to him." He said: I said to my father: "O my father, who is this who follows him and contradicts what he says?" He said: "This is his uncle ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, Abū Lahab." Ibn Hishām said: Al-Nābighah said: "It is as though you are one of the camels of Banī Uqaysh – a worn waterskin rattles behind his legs." Ibn Isḥāq said: Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī related to us that he came to Kindah at their encampments, among whom was a chief of theirs called Mulayḥ. He called them to Allah, mighty and glorious, and offered himself to them, but they refused him.

✧ He came to Kalb in their encampments, to a clan of theirs called Banū ʿAbd Allāh, and called them to God and offered himself to them, so much so that he said to them, “O Banū ʿAbd Allāh, God, mighty and glorious, has made your father’s name excellent”; but they would not accept from him what he offered them.

✧ [The Messenger of Allah ﷺ offering himself to Banū ʿĀmir] Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Zuhrī narrated to me that he came to Banū ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah and called them to God, Mighty and Majestic, and offered himself to them. A man from among them—called Bayḥarah b. Firās; Ibn Hishām said: Firās b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Salamah (al-Khayr) b. Qushayr b. Kaʿb b. Rabīʿah b. ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah—said to him: "By God, if I could take this youth from Quraysh, I would devour the Arabs through him." Then he said: "Do you think that if we pledge allegiance to you for your cause, and then God makes you victorious over those who oppose you, will authority belong to us after you?" He said: "Authority belongs to God; He places it wherever He wills." He said: "So should we expose our throats to the Arabs for your sake, and then when God makes you victorious, authority will be for others? We have no need of your cause." So they refused him. When the people departed, Banū ʿĀmir returned to an old man of theirs who had become so advanced in age that he was unable to attend the fairs with them. Whenever they returned to him, they would tell him what had happened at the fair. When they came to him that year, he asked them about what had occurred at their fair. They said: "A youth from Quraysh came to us, then one of Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, claiming he is a prophet, calling us to protect him, stand with him, and bring him to our lands." He said: The old man placed his hands on his head and then said: "O Banū ʿĀmir, is there any way to undo this? Is there any means to catch its tail? By Him in whose hand the soul of so-and-so is, no descendant of Ishmael ever fabricated it, and it is certainly true. Where was your judgment?"
