✧ The story of the idol of ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ [the enmity of ʿAmr’s people against his idol]. When they came to Madinah, they made Islam public there, and among their people were remnants of their elders who remained upon their religion of polytheism, among them ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ b. Zayd b. Ḥarām b. Kaʿb b. Ghanm b. Kaʿb b. Salamah. His son Muʿādh b. ʿAmr had been present at al-ʿAqabah and had pledged allegiance there to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ was a chief among the chiefs of the Banū Salamah and a noble among their nobles. He had set up in his house an idol of wood called Manāt, as the nobles used to do, taking it as a god which he venerated and purified. When the young men of the Banū Salamah embraced Islam—Muʿādh b. Jabal and his son Muʿādh b. ʿAmr (b. al-Jamūḥ) along with other young men of theirs who had embraced Islam and had been present at al-ʿAqabah—they would go out by night to that idol of ʿAmr, carry it off, and throw it into one of the pits of the Banū Salamah, in which were people’s refuse, upside down on its head. In the morning ʿAmr would say: “Woe to you! Who transgressed against this god of ours last night?” Then he would go out looking for it, and when he found it he would wash it, purify it, and perfume it, then say: “By Allah, if I knew who did this to you, I would disgrace him.” When evening came and ʿAmr slept, they would go back to it and do the same to it; he would go out in the morning and find it in the same state of harm as before, and he would wash it, purify it, and perfume it. Then they would again go to it at nightfall and do the same to it. When they had done this to him repeatedly, one day he took it out from where they had thrown it, washed it, purified it, and perfumed it, then brought his sword and hung it on it, saying: “By Allah, I do not know who does to you what you see; if there is any good in you, then defend yourself—here is the sword with you.” When evening came and ʿAmr slept, they went to it, took the sword from its neck, then took a dead dog and tied it to it with a rope, then threw it into a well of the wells of the Banū Salamah, in which was some of people’s refuse. Then ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ went out in the morning and did not find it in its place. [ʿAmr’s Islam and his poetry about that] He went out searching for it until he found it in that well, upside down, tied to a dead dog. When he saw it and beheld its state, and those of his people who had embraced Islam spoke to him, he embraced Islam by the mercy of Allah, and his Islam was good. Upon embracing Islam, and having come to know from Allah what he knew, he said—remembering that idol of his and what he had seen of its affair, and thanking Allah the Exalted who rescued him from the blindness and misguidance in which he had been: “By Allah, if you were a god, you would not be—you and a dog—in the middle of a well, tied together. Fie on the place where I find you as a god! Now we have searched you out and found the evil of your deceit. Praise be to Allah, the Most High, possessor of favors, the Giver, the Provider, the Judge of the Day of Judgment. It is He who rescued me before I could be in the darkness of a grave, pledged over—through Aḥmad, the guided one, the prophet, the one taken as a pledge.”
