The conditions of the pledge of allegiance at the last ʿAqabah

Translation

✧ The conditions of the pledge of allegiance at the last ʿAqabah Ibn Isḥāq said: The pledge of war, when God permitted His Messenger ﷺ to fight, included conditions other than his condition upon them at the first ʿAqabah. The first had been upon the pledge of women, because God Most High had not yet permitted His Messenger ﷺ to wage war. But when God permitted him to do so, and the Messenger of God ﷺ accepted their pledge at the last ʿAqabah to wage war against the red and the black, he took for himself and stipulated for the people on behalf of his Lord, and made for them, for fulfilling that, Paradise. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿUbādah b. al-Walīd b. ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit related to me, from his father al-Walīd, from his grandfather ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit—and he was one of the deputies—who said: We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ with the pledge of war—and ʿUbādah was among the twelve who had pledged allegiance to him at the first ʿAqabah upon the pledge of women—to listen and obey, in our hardship and our ease, in what we liked and what we disliked, and when preference was shown over us; and that we would not dispute the matter with its people; and that we would speak the truth wherever we were, not fearing in God the blame of any blamer.
