Notes

machine translationThis is an authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith meeting the criteria of the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhārī and Muslim), though they did not record it. Al-Ḥākim said: "I examined these reports that have come down about the People of the Bench (Ahl al-Ṣuffah), and I found them to be among the greatest of the Companions in piety, in reliance upon Allah ﷻ, and in constant service to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. Allah the Exalted chose for them what He chose for His Prophet ﷺ: lowliness, poverty, humble devotion to the worship of Allah ﷻ, and leaving the world to its people. They are the group to whom the Sufis have attributed themselves, generation after generation. So whoever follows their way and their patience in abandoning the world, in finding comfort in poverty, and in refraining from exposing himself to begging, then in every age they are followers of the People of the Bench and rely upon their Creator." Meeting the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
