خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، وَهُوَ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُخْبِرَنَا بِلَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ فَتَلَاحَا رَجُلَانِ فَقَالَ: لَقَدْ خَرَجْتُ إِلَيْكُمْ، وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُخْبِرَكُمْ بِلَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ فَتَلَاحَا فُلَانٌ وَفُلَانٌ فَذَهَبَ عَنِّي، أَوْ كَلِمَةً نَحْوَهَا، وَعَسَى أَنْ يَكُونَ خَيْرًا لَكُمْ فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فِي التَّاسِعَةِ، وَالسَّابِعَةِ، وَالْخَامِسَةِ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us, intending to inform us about the Night of Decree. Then two men began arguing. He said: "I had come out to you intending to inform you about the Night of Decree, but so-and-so and so-and-so argued, and it was taken away from me"—or he said something similar—"and perhaps that is better for you. So seek it in the last ten nights, on the ninth, the seventh, and the fifth."

" إِنِّي قَدْ حَدَّثْتُكُمْ عَنِ الدَّجَّالِ حَتَّى خَشِيتُ، وَذَكَرَ كَلِمَةً، أَلَا وَإِنَّهُ رَجُلٌ قَصِيرٌ أَفْحَجُ جَعْدٌ أَعْوَرُ مَمْسُوحُ الْعَيْنِ لَيْسَتْ بِقَائِمَةٍ، وَلَا جَحْرَاءَ فَإِنِ الْتَبَسَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّكُمْ لَنْ تَرَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ حَتَّى تَمُوتُوا
✧ "I have told you about the Dajjal until I feared"—and he mentioned a word—"indeed, he is a short man, bow-legged, with curly hair, one-eyed, with his eye wiped flat, neither protruding nor sunken. If it becomes unclear to you, know that you will not see your Lord until you die."

✧ "Whoever testifies that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, and that ʿĪsā son of Maryam is Allah's servant and His word which He conveyed to Maryam, and a spirit from Him, and that Paradise is true, and that the Fire is true, Allah will admit him to Paradise regardless of what deeds he has."

✧ "Whoever says: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, and that ʿĪsā is Allah's servant and the son of His maidservant, and His word which He conveyed to Maryam, and a spirit from Him, and that Paradise is true, and that the Fire is true, Allah will admit him through whichever of the eight gates of Paradise He wills."

✧ Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ followed a funeral procession, he would not sit down until the body was placed in the grave. Once, a Jewish rabbi came and said, "This is what we do." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down and said, "Do the opposite of them."

✧ Whoever prays the prescribed prayer, performs it fully, and prays it at its proper time will meet Allah, the Exalted, with a covenant that He will not punish him. And whoever does not establish the prescribed prayer and does not pray it at its proper time will meet Allah with no covenant—if He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will have mercy on him.

✧ When a man prays, perfects his ablution, and completes its bowing and prostration—I think he said: and the recitation in it—it says: May Allah preserve you as you have preserved me. And when he performs its bowing poorly and does not complete its bowing or prostration, it says: May Allah waste you as you have wasted me.

عَادَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا مَرِيضٌ فِي أُنَاسٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " هَلْ تَدْرُونَ مَا الشَّهِيدُ ؟ " فَسَكَتُوا، فَقُلْتُ: وَمَنْ يَدْرِي مَنِ الشَّهِيدُ ؟ فَقُلْتُ لِامْرَأَتِي: أَسْنِدِينِي فَأَسْنَدَتْنِي، فَقُلْتُ: الشَّهِيدُ مَنْ أَسْلَمَ، ثُمَّ هَاجَرَ، ثُمَّ قُتِلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ، فَقَالَ: " إِنَّ شُهَدَاءَ أُمَّتِي إِذًا لَقَلِيلٌ، الْقَتْلُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ شَهَادَةٌ، وَالْبَطْنُ شَهَادَةٌ، وَالْغَرَقُ شَهَادَةٌ، وَالنُّفَسَاءُ شَهَادَةٌ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited me while I was ill, along with some of the Ansar. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Do you know who the martyr is?" They remained silent. I said: Who knows who the martyr is? I said to my wife: Help me sit up. So she helped me sit up, and I said: The martyr is one who submits, then emigrates, then is killed in the way of Allah; he is a martyr. He said: "The martyrs of my nation would then be few. Being killed in the way of Allah is martyrdom, stomach illness is martyrdom, drowning is martyrdom, and a woman who dies in childbirth is martyrdom."

✧ Al-Mu'afa b. 'Imran reported to us, from al-Mughira b. Ziyad, from 'Ubada b. Nusayy, from al-Aswad b. Tha'laba, from 'Ubada b. al-Samit, from the Prophet ﷺ, with something similar. This hadith is not known to be narrated from 'Ubada, from the Prophet ﷺ, except through this chain of transmission.

✧ The martyr has six blessings with Allah: he is forgiven with the first drop of his blood, and he is clothed with the garment of honor—or he said: the garment of faith—and he is granted safety from the greatest terror, and he sees his seat in Paradise, and he is married to the wide-eyed maidens.

✧ I entered the mosque of Damascus and sat in a circle. A man said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "It is reported from Allah, Mighty and Glorious: My love is due for those who love one another for My sake; My love is due for those who maintain ties for My sake; My love is due for those who visit one another for My sake; My love is due for those who are generous to one another for My sake." I said: Who are you, may Allah have mercy on you? He said: I am 'Ubada b. al-Samit.

صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، صَلَاةَ الْغَدَاةِ، فَثَقُلَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْقِرَاءَةُ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ: إِنِّي أَرَاكُمْ تَقْرَؤُونَ وَرَاءَ إِمَامِكُمْ قَالَ: قُلْنَا: أَجَلْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: " فَلَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ إِلَّا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the dawn prayer, and the recitation became difficult for him. When he finished, he said: “I see that you are reciting behind your imam.” We said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Then do not do so, except for the Opening of the Book (Umm al-Qur’an), for there is no prayer without the Opening of the Book.”

✧ “Whoever worships Allah without associating anything with Him, establishes the prayer, gives the zakat, and hears and obeys, Allah will admit him from whichever of the gates of Paradise He wills, and it has eight gates. And whoever worships Allah without associating anything with Him, establishes the prayer, gives the zakat, and hears but disobeys, then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has the choice regarding his affair: if He wills, He will have mercy on him, and if He wills, He will punish him.”

" إِذَا صَلَّى الرَّجُلُ فَأَحْسَنَ الْوُضُوءَ، وَأَتَمَّ الرُّكُوعَ، وَالسُّجُودَ " وَأَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ: وَالْقِرَاءَةَ فِيهَا، قَالَتْ: " حَفِظَكَ اللهُ كَمَا حَفِظْتَنِي، وَإِذَا أَسَاءَ رُكُوعَهَا أَوْ وَلَمْ يُتِمَّ رُكُوعَهَا، وَلَا سُجُودَهَا " أَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ: وَالْقِرَاءَةَ فِيهَا، قَالَتْ: " ضَيَّعَكَ اللهُ كَمَا ضَيَّعْتَنِي
✧ “When a man prays and perfects his ablution, and completes the bowing and the prostration” – and I think he said: “and the recitation in it – she (the prayer) says: ‘May Allah preserve you as you have preserved me.’ But if he does badly in its bowing or does not complete its bowing or its prostration” – I think he said: “and the recitation in it – she says: ‘May Allah waste you as you have wasted me.’”

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited me while I was ill, along with some of the Ansar. He said: “Do you know who the martyr is?” They remained silent, so I said to my wife: “Support me.” She supported me, and I said: “The martyr is the one who embraces Islam, then emigrates, then is killed in the path of Allah – he is a martyr.” He said: “Then the martyrs of my community would be few. Being killed in the path of Allah is martyrdom, stomach disease is martyrdom, drowning is martyrdom, and a woman dying in childbirth is martyrdom.”

جَلَسَ مَعَ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ، وَأَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ، وَالْحَارِثِ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ، فَتَذَاكَرْنَا حَدِيثَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ: يَا عُبَادَةُ، أَعِدْ عَلَيَّ كَلِمَاتِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةِ كَذَا وَكَذَا، فَقَالَ عُبَادَةُ: إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ، صَلَّى بِهِمْ فِي غَزَاةٍ لَهُ إِلَى بَعِيرٍ مِنَ الْمَغْنَمِ فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ تَنَاوَلَ وَبَرَةً، فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ: اجْلِسُوا إِنَّ هَذَا مِنْ غَنَائِمِكُمْ، وَلَيْسَ لِي فِيهَا إِلَّا الْفَيْءُ مَعَكُمْ، وَإِلَّا الْخُمُسُ، وَالْخُمُسُ مَرْدُودٌ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَدُّوا الْخَيْطَ، وَالْمِخْيَطَ، وَأَكْبَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، وَأَصْغَرَ، وَلَا تَغُلُّوا فَإِنَّ الْغُلُولَ عَارٌ وَنَارٌ عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ، وَجَاهِدُوا النَّاسَ فِي اللهِ
✧ He sat with Ubada b. al-Samit, Abu al-Darda’, and al-Harith b. Mu’awiya, and we discussed the hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Abu al-Darda’ said: “O Ubada, repeat for me the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in such-and-such a expedition.” Ubada said: The Prophet ﷺ led them in prayer during one of his expeditions facing a camel from the spoils. When he said the salam, he took a piece of fur and turned to us, saying: “Sit down. This is from your spoils, and I have no right to it except the fay’ along with you, and the fifth. And the fifth is returned to you. So hand over the thread and the needle, and anything greater or smaller than that, and do not embezzle, for embezzlement is disgrace and fire upon its perpetrators in this world and the Hereafter. And strive against people in the cause of Allah.”

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed with us facing a camel from the spoils of war, then he took a piece of wool from the camel and placed it between his two fingers and said: O people, this is your booty, so return the thread and the needle, for embezzlement is a disgrace upon its perpetrator on the Day of Resurrection, and a shame and a fire.

" لِلشَّهِيدِ عِنْدَ اللهِ خِصَالٌ: يُغْفَرُ لَهُ بِأَوَّلِ دَفْعَةٍ مِنْ دَمِهِ، وَيُحَلُّ عَلَيْهِ حُلَّةُ الْإِيمَانِ أَوْ يُحَلَّى بِحُلَّةِ الْإِيمَانِ، وَيُؤَمَّنُ مِنَ الْفَزَعِ الْأَكْبَرِ، وَيَرَى مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ، وَيُزَوَّجُ مِنَ الْحُورِ الْعِينِ
✧ For the martyr there are special qualities with Allah: he is forgiven at the first drop of his blood, and the garment of faith is placed upon him—or he is adorned with the garment of faith—and he is granted safety from the greatest terror, and he sees his seat in Paradise, and he is married to the wide-eyed maidens of Paradise.

" مَا مِنْ رَجُلٍ يَغْزُو فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَيَسْأَلُ اللهَ الشَّهَادَةَ يَعْلَمُ اللهُ أَنَّهُ قَدْ أَخْلَصَ الدُّعَاءَ، ثُمَّ يَمُوتُ إِلَّا كَانَ لَهُ أَجْرُ الشَّهِيدِ، وَمَا مِنْ رَجُلٍ تَخْرُجُ لَهُ شَيْبَةٌ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ إِلَّا كَانَتْ لَهُ نُورًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
✧ There is no man who goes out in the path of Allah and asks Allah for martyrdom, while Allah knows that he has sincerely made the supplication, and then dies, except that he has the reward of a martyr. And there is no man for whom a grey hair appears in the path of Allah except that it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection.

✧ We were with the Prophet ﷺ and he said: Is there any stranger among you? meaning the People of the Book. We said: No, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Close the door. And he said: Raise your hands and say: There is no god but Allah. So we raised our hands for a while, then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ lowered his hand and said: Praise be to Allah, You sent me with this word, commanded me with it, and promised me Paradise for it, and You do not break the promise. Then he said: Rejoice, for Allah has forgiven you.

✧ Whoever prays the prescribed prayer and performs it at its proper time will meet Allah and have a covenant with Him that He will not punish him. And whoever does not establish the prescribed prayer at its proper time will meet Allah with no covenant; if He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will have mercy on him.

✧ Shall I not guide you to that by which Allah expiates sins and erases transgressions? They said: Yes. He said: Performing ablution thoroughly in difficult circumstances, taking many steps to the mosques, and waiting for the next prayer after the prayer. That is the guarding of the frontier; that is the guarding of the frontier.

✧ Some donkeys passed by him while he was in Syria carrying wine. He took a knife from the market, went to them, and slit them open. Then he said: We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to hear and obey in activity and laziness, in hardship and ease, to enjoin good and forbid evil, to speak for Allah without fear of any blamer's blame, and to support—I think he said—the oppressed, and to prevent from him what we prevent from ourselves and our children. This is what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pledged allegiance upon. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: After me, people will govern your affairs who will make you recognize what you disapprove of, and disapprove of what you recognize. So there is no obedience to one who disobeys Allah.

✧ Gold for gold, like for like; silver for silver, like for like; wheat for wheat; barley for barley; dates for dates; salt for salt. Whoever adds or asks for addition has engaged in usury.
