✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ was on a journey, and Bilal was with him. He wanted to announce the iqama, so the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Delay.' Then he wanted to announce the iqama, and he said: 'Delay.' Then he wanted to announce the iqama, and he said: 'Delay' three times—that is, for the noon prayer—until we saw the shade of the hillocks. Then he announced the iqama and the Messenger of God ﷺ prayed. Then he said: 'The intense heat is from the scorching breath of Hell, so delay the prayer.'

✧ A bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of God, the hyena has devoured us.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'I fear for you from other than the hyena more than I do from the hyena, when the world is poured upon you in abundance. Would that my community would not wear gold.'

" إِنَّ نَاسًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي سِيمَاهُمُ التَّحْلِيقُ، يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حُلُوقَهُمْ، يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ - أَوْ مِنَ الْإِسْلَامِ - كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ، هُمْ شَرُّ الْخَلْقِ وَالْخَلِيقَةِ
✧ There will be people from my community whose mark is the shaving of heads. They recite the Quran but it does not go beyond their throats. They pass through the religion—or through Islam—as an arrow passes through the game. They are the worst of creation and creatures.

" إِنَّهُ سَيَكُونُ أُمَرَاءُ يُؤَخِّرُونَ الصَّلَاةَ عَنْ مَوَاقِيتِهَا، أَلَا فَصَلِّ الصَّلَاةَ لِوَقْتِهَا، ثُمَّ ائْتِهِمْ، فَإِنْ كَانُوا قَدْ صَلَّوْا كُنْتَ قَدْ أَحْرَزْتَ صَلَاتَكَ، وَإِلَّا صَلَّيْتَ مَعَهُمْ فَكَانَتْ لَكَ نَافِلَةً
✧ There will be leaders who delay the prayer beyond its proper times. So pray the prayer at its time, then go to them. If they have already prayed, you will have secured your prayer; otherwise, pray with them and it will be a supererogatory prayer for you.

لَمَّا قَدِمَ أَبُو ذَرٍّ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ مِنَ الشَّامِ قَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، أَتَحْسَبُ أَنِّي مِنْ قَوْمٍ - وَاللهِ مَا أَنَا مِنْهُمْ وَلَا أُدْرِكُهُمْ - يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ، يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الْإِسْلَامِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ، لَا يَرْجِعُونَ إِلَيْهِ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ السَّهْمُ عَلَى فَوْقِهِ، سِيمَاهُمُ التَّحْلِيقُ، وَاللهِ لَوْ أَمَرْتَنِي أَنْ أَقُومَ مَا قَعَدْتُ مَا مَلَكَتْنِي رِجْلَايَ، وَلَوْ وَثَّقْتَنِي بِعَرْقُوَتَيْ قَتَبٍ مَا حَلَلْتُهُ حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَنْتَ الَّذِي تَحُلُّنِي
✧ When Abu Dharr came to Uthman from Syria, he said: 'O Commander of the Believers, do you think that I am of a people—by God, I am not of them and shall not reach them—who recite the Quran but it does not pass their collarbones, who pass through Islam as an arrow passes through the game and do not return to it until the arrow returns to its notch? Their mark is the shaving of heads. By God, if you ordered me to stand, I would not sit as long as my legs could support me, and if you bound me with the two handles of a saddle, I would not loosen it until you are the one who loosens me.'

" يَقْطَعُ صَلَاةَ الرَّجُلِ إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مِثْلُ مُؤْخِرَةِ الرَّحْلِ - الْمَرْأَةُ وَالْحِمَارُ وَالْكَلْبُ الْأَسْوَدُ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي ذَرٍّ: مَا بَالُ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْأَحْمَرِ ؟ فَقَالَ: يَا ابْنَ أَخِي، سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَمَا سَأَلْتَنِي، فَقَالَ: " الْكَلْبُ الْأَسْوَدُ شَيْطَانٌ
✧ A man's prayer is cut off if there is not in front of him something like the back of a saddle—by a woman, a donkey, and a black dog. He said: I said to Abu Dharr: 'What about a black dog as opposed to a red one?' He said: 'O nephew, I asked the Messenger of God ﷺ just as you asked me, and he said: "The black dog is a devil."'

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ ضَرَبَ فَخِذَهُ، فَقَالَ: كَيْفَ أَنْتَ إِذَا بَقِيتَ فِي قَوْمٍ يُؤَخِّرُونَ الصَّلَاةَ ؟ فَصَلِّ الصَّلَاةَ لِوَقْتِهَا ثُمَّ ائْتِهِمْ، فَإِنْ كُنْتَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ حِينَ تُقَامُ فَصَلِّ مَعَهُمْ
✧ The Prophet ﷺ struck his thigh and said: 'How will you be when you remain among people who delay the prayer? So pray the prayer at its time, then go to them. If you are in the mosque when it is established, then pray with them.'

✧ I was between the Kaaba and its curtains when the Messenger of God ﷺ entered the mosque. He began with the Black Stone and touched it, then circumambulated the House seven times, and prayed behind the Maqam two units.

✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ when he had finished his prayer, and I said: Peace be upon you. He said: And upon you. He said: Thus I was the first to greet him with the greeting of Islam.

" قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: " فَمَا كَانَ طَعَامُكَ ؟ " قُلْتُ: مَا كَانَ لِي طَعَامٌ وَلَا شَرَابٌ إِلَّا مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ، وَلَقَدْ سَمِنْتُ حَتَّى تَكَسَّرَتْ عُكَنُ بَطْنِي، وَمَا أَجِدُ عَلَى كَبِدِي سُخْفَةَ جُوعٍ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّهَا مُبَارَكَةٌ، وَهِيَ طَعَامُ طُعْمٍ، وَشِفَاءُ سُقْمٍ.
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "How long have you been here?" He said: I said: For thirty days and nights. He said: "Thirty days and nights!" I said: Yes. He said: "Then what was your food?" I said: I had no food or drink except the water of Zamzam, and I have grown fat until the folds of my belly have creased, and I do not find on my liver any weakness of hunger. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: "It is blessed; it is food that nourishes and a cure for sickness."

فَغَبَرْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَا غَبَرْتُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّهُ قَدْ رُفِعَتْ لِي أَرْضٌ ذَاتُ نَخْلٍ، وَلَا أُرَاهَا إِلَّا يَثْرِبَ، فَهَلْ أَنْتَ مُبَلِّغٌ عَنِّي قَوْمَكَ مَا يَنْفَعُهُمُ اللهُ بِكَ وَيَأْجُرُكَ فِيهِمْ ؟ " قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: فَانْطَلَقْتُ فَلَقِيتُ أُنَيْسًا، فَقَالَ لِي: مَا صَنَعْتَ ؟ قُلْتُ: أَسْلَمْتُ وَصَدَّقْتُ، فَقَالَ: مَا بِي رَغْبَةٌ عَنْ دِينِكَ، فَقَدْ أَسْلَمْتُ وَصَدَّقْتُ، قَالَ: وَأَتَيْنَا أُمَّنَا فَعَرَضْنَا عَلَيْهَا الْإِسْلَامَ، فَقَالَتْ: مَا بِي رَغْبَةٌ عَنْ دِينِكُمَا، فَقَالَتْ: أَسْلَمْتُ وَصَدَّقْتُ، قَالَ: وَأَتَيْنَا قَوْمَنَا فَعَرَضْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ الْإِسْلَامَ، فَأَسْلَمَ نِصْفُهُمْ، وَقَالَ النِّصْفُ الْآخَرُ: إِذَا قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَسْلَمْنَا، قَالَ: فَكَانَ يَؤُمُّهُمْ إِيمَاءُ بْنُ رَحَضَةَ الْغِفَارِيُّ - وَكَانَ سَيِّدَهُمْ - فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ أَسْلَمَ النِّصْفُ الْبَاقِي، وَجَاءَ إِخْوَانُنَا مِنْ أَسْلَمَ، فَقَالُوا: نُسْلِمُ عَلَى مَا أَسْلَمَ عَلَيْهِ إِخْوَانُنَا مِنْ غِفَارَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّهَا غِفَارُ، غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهَا، وَأَسْلَمُ سَالَمَهَا اللهُ
✧ I remained with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as long as I remained. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "A land of palm trees has been shown to me, and I do not think it is other than Yathrib. Will you convey from me to your people what Allah may benefit them through you and reward you among them?" I said: Yes. He said: So I set out and met Unays, who said to me: What have you done? I said: I have submitted and believed. He said: I have no desire to turn away from your religion, for I have submitted and believed. He said: We came to our mother and presented Islam to her. She said: I have no desire to turn away from the religion of you two, and she said: I have submitted and believed. He said: We came to our people and presented Islam to them. Half of them submitted, and the other half said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrives we will submit. He said: Ima' b. Rahada al-Ghifari used to lead them in prayer, and he was their chief. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah, the remaining half submitted. And our brothers from Aslam came and said: We submit on the same basis as our brothers from Ghifar. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "It is Ghifar; may Allah forgive it, and Aslam; may Allah keep it safe."

قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ "، قُلْتُ: لَبَّيْكَ وَسَعْدَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: كَيْفَ أَنْتَ إِذَا أَصَابَ النَّاسَ جُوعٌ، تَأْتِي فِرَاشَكَ وَلَا تَقْدِرُ أَنْ تَرْجِعَ إِلَى مَسْجِدِكَ، وَتَأْتِي مَسْجِدَكَ وَلَا تَقْدِرُ أَنْ تَرْجِعَ إِلَى فِرَاشِكَ ؟ " قَالَ: قُلْتُ: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ، قَالَ: " عَلَيْكَ بِالْعِفَّةِ "، قَالَ: " كَيْفَ أَنْتَ إِذَا أَصَابَ النَّاسَ مَوْتٌ كَثِيرٌ حَتَّى يَكُونَ الْبَيْتُ - يَعْنِي الْقَبْرَ - بِالْوَصِيفِ ؟ " قَالَ: قُلْتُ: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ، قَالَ: " عَلَيْكَ بِالصَّبْرِ "، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " كَيْفَ أَنْتَ إِذَا رَأَيْتَ أَحْجَارَ الزَّيْتِ قَدْ غَرِقَتْ بِالدِّمَاءِ ؟ " قَالَ: قُلْتُ: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ، أَوْ: مَا خَارَ اللهُ لِي وَرَسُولُهُ، قَالَ: " عَلَيْكَ بِمَنْ أَنْتَ مِنْهُ - أَوِ - الْحَقْ بِمَنْ أَنْتَ مِنْهُ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "O Abu Dharr," I said: At your service and at your pleasure, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "How will you be when people are struck by hunger, and you come to your bed but cannot return to your mosque, and you come to your mosque but cannot return to your bed?" He said: I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: "Keep to chastity." He said: "How will you be when people are struck by much death, so that a house - meaning a grave - will be for a servant?" He said: I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: "Keep to patience." Then he said: "How will you be when you see the stones of al-Zayt sunk in blood?" He said: I said: Allah and His Messenger know best, or: What Allah and His Messenger have chosen for me. He said: "Keep to those you belong to," or "Join those you belong to."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "O Abu Dharr, do you know where the sun goes when it sets?" He said: I said: No. He said: "It goes to the Throne and prostrates, and it is given permission to return. It was said to it: Return from where you came, so it returns from where it came. That is its resting place."

✧ I said: O Messenger of Allah, which mosque was first set down for people? He said: "The Sacred Mosque, then the Aqsa Mosque." He said: I said: How much was between them? He said: "Forty years. And wherever the prayer overtakes you, pray, for that is a mosque."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِيمَا يَرْوِي عَنْ رَبِّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى، قَالَ: حَرَّمْتُ الظُّلْمَ عَلَى نَفْسِي، وَحَرَّمْتُهُ عَلَى عِبَادِي، فَلَا تَظَالَمُوا، كُلُّ بَنِي آدَمَ يُخْطِئُ بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ، ثُمَّ يَسْتَغْفِرُنِي فَأَغْفِرُ لَهُ وَلَا أُبَالِي
✧ From the Prophet ﷺ in what he relates from his Lord, Blessed and Exalted, he said: I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have forbidden it for My servants, so do not wrong one another. Every son of Adam errs by night and day, then he seeks My forgiveness and I forgive him, and I do not care.

" الْحَسَنَةُ بِعَشَرَةٍ، وَالسَّيِّئَةُ بِوَاحِدَةٍ أَوْ أَغْفِرُهَا، وَمَنْ لَقِيَنِي بِقُرَابِ الْأَرْضِ خَطِيئَةً لَا يُشْرِكُ بِي لَقِيتُهُ بِقُرَابِ الْأَرْضِ مَغْفِرَةً، وَمَنْ هَمَّ بِحَسَنَةٍ فَلَمْ يَعْمَلْهَا كُتِبَتْ لَهُ حَسَنَةٌ، وَمَنْ هَمَّ بِسَيِّئَةٍ فَلَمْ يَعْمَلْهَا لَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْهِ شَيْءٌ، وَمَنْ تَقَرَّبَ مِنِّي شِبْرًا تَقَرَّبْتُ مِنْهُ ذِرَاعًا، وَمَنْ تَقَرَّبَ مِنِّي ذِرَاعًا تَقَرَّبْتُ مِنْهُ بَاعًا
✧ "A good deed is multiplied ten times, and an evil deed is counted once or I forgive it. Whoever meets Me with an earth-full of sin but does not associate anything with Me, I will meet him with an earth-full of forgiveness. Whoever intends a good deed but does not do it, a good deed is written for him. Whoever intends an evil deed but does not do it, nothing is written against him. Whoever draws near to Me a handspan, I draw near to him a cubit. Whoever draws near to Me a cubit, I draw near to him a fathom."

صُمْنَا رَمَضَانَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ يَقُمْ بِنَا شَيْئًا مِنَ الشَّهْرِ، حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتْ لَيْلَةُ أَرْبَعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ السَّابِعَةُ مِمَّا يَبْقَى، صَلَّى بِنَا حَتَّى كَادَ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ، فَلَمَّا كَانَتْ لَيْلَةُ خَمْسٍ وَعِشْرِينَ لَمْ يُصَلِّ بِنَا، فَلَمَّا كَانَتْ لَيْلَةُ سِتٍّ وَعِشْرِينَ الْخَامِسَةُ مِمَّا يَبْقَى صَلَّى بِنَا حَتَّى كَادَ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ شَطْرُ اللَّيْلِ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوْ نَفَّلْتَنَا بَقِيَّةَ لَيْلَتِنَا، فَقَالَ: لَا، إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ إِذَا صَلَّى مَعَ الْإِمَامِ حَتَّى يَنْصَرِفَ كُتِبَتْ لَهُ قِيَامَ لَيْلَةٍ، فَلَمَّا كَانَتْ لَيْلَةُ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ لَمْ يُصَلِّ بِنَا، فَلَمَّا كَانَتْ لَيْلَةُ ثَمَانٍ وَعِشْرِينَ رَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ وَاجْتَمَعَ لَهُ النَّاسُ، فَصَلَّى بِنَا حَتَّى كَادَ أَنْ يَفُوتَنَا الْفَلَاحُ، ثُمَّ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي لَمْ يُصَلِّ بِنَا شَيْئًا مِنَ الشَّهْرِ
✧ We fasted Ramadan with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he did not lead us in night prayer at all during the month, until the night of the twenty-fourth, the seventh remaining. He prayed with us until nearly a third of the night had passed. On the night of the twenty-fifth he did not pray with us. On the night of the twenty-sixth, the fifth remaining, he prayed with us until nearly half the night had passed. I said: O Messenger of Allah, if only you would continue with us for the rest of our night. He said: "No. When a man prays with the imam until he finishes, the standing of a whole night is written for him." On the night of the twenty-seventh he did not pray with us. On the night of the twenty-eighth, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to his family and the people gathered for him, and he prayed with us until we almost missed the pre-dawn meal. Then, O son of my brother, he did not pray with us at all for the rest of the month.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "Three people Allah will not look at on the Day of Resurrection, nor speak to them, and they will have a painful punishment." I said: O Messenger of Allah, who are these? They have failed and lost. He said: "The one who reminds others of his gifts, the one who lets his lower garment hang below his ankles, and the one who sells his goods by a false oath."

كَانَ الْحَدِيثُ يَبْلُغُنِي عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ، وَكُنْتُ أَشْتَهِي لِقَاءَهُ، فَلَقِيتُهُ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ إِنَّهُ كَانَ يَبْلُغُنِي عَنْكَ الْحَدِيثُ فَكُنْتُ أَشْتَهِي لِقَاءَكَ، قَالَ: لِلهِ أَبُوكَ، فَقَدْ لَقِيتَ، فَهَاتِ، قُلْتُ: بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ حَدَّثَكُمْ أَنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُحِبُّ ثَلَاثَةً وَيُبْغِضُ ثَلَاثَةً، قَالَ: مَا إِخَالُنِي أَنْ أَكْذِبَ عَلَى خَلِيلِي، قُلْتُ: فَمَنِ الثَّلَاثَةُ الَّذِينَ يُحِبُّ ؟ قَالَ: رَجُلٌ لَقِيَ الْعَدُوَّ فَقَاتَلَ، وَإِنَّكُمْ لَتَجِدُونَ ذَلِكَ فِي الْكِتَابِ عِنْدَكُمْ: إِنَّ اللهَ يُحِبُّ الَّذِينَ يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِهِ صَفًّا، قُلْتُ: وَمَنْ ؟ قَالَ: " رَجُلٌ لَهُ جَارُ سُوءٍ فَهُوَ يُؤْذِيهِ وَيَصْبِرُ عَلَى أَذَاهُ فَيَكْفِيهِ اللهُ إِيَّاهُ بِحَيَاةٍ أَوْ مَوْتٍ "، قَالَ: وَمَنْ ؟ قَالَ: " رَجُلٌ كَانَ مَعَ قَوْمٍ فِي سَفَرٍ فَنَزَلُوا فَعَرَّسُوا وَقَدْ شَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ الْكَرَى وَالنُّعَاسُ، وَوَضَعُوا رُءُوسَهُمْ فَنَامُوا، وَقَامَ فَتَوَضَّأَ وَصَلَّى رَهْبَةً لِلهِ وَرَغْبَةً إِلَيْهِ "، قُلْتُ: فَمَنِ الثَّلَاثَةُ الَّذِينَ يُبْغِضُهُمُ اللهُ ؟ قَالَ: " الْبَخِيلُ الْمَنَّانُ، وَالْمُخْتَالُ الْفَخُورُ " وَإِنَّكُمْ لَتَجِدُونَ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ: إِنَّ اللهَ لا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخْتَالٍ فَخُورٍ، قَالَ: فَمَنِ الثَّالِثُ ؟ قَالَ: " التَّاجِرُ الْحَلَّافُ " أَوِ " الْبَائِعُ الْحَلَّافُ
✧ Talk would reach me from Abu Dharr, and I used to desire to meet him, so I met him and said: O Abu Dharr, talk used to reach me from you, and I used to desire to meet you. He said: May your father be devoted to God! You have indeed met me, so ask. I said: It has reached me that you relate that the Messenger of God ﷺ told you that God, Mighty and Majestic, loves three and hates three. He said: I do not think I would lie about my close friend. I said: Who are the three whom He loves? He said: A man who meets the enemy and fights, and you will indeed find that in the Book you have: God loves those who fight in His way in ranks. I said: And who? He said: A man who has a bad neighbor who harms him, and he bears his harm patiently, so God will suffice him against him through life or death. He said: And who? He said: A man who was with a group on a journey, and they stopped to rest at night, and sleep and drowsiness had weighed heavily upon them, so they laid down their heads and slept, while he got up, performed ablution, and prayed out of fear of God and desire for Him. I said: Who are the three whom God hates? He said: The miserly who reminds others of his favors, and the arrogant boaster, and you will indeed find in the Book of God: God does not love any arrogant boaster. He said: Who is the third? He said: The trader who swears much, or the seller who swears much.

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ said about things in which a man is rewarded, even in his having intercourse with his wife. It was said: O Messenger of God, how can that be when it is his desire that he fulfills? He said: Do you think that if he had done it unlawfully, he would not be burdened with sin? They said: Yes. He said: Thus, he is rewarded.

" أُوتِيتُ خَمْسًا لَمْ يُؤْتَهُنَّ نَبِيٌّ قَبْلِي: جُعِلَتْ لِيَ الْأَرْضُ مَسْجِدًا وَطَهُورًا، وَنُصِرْتُ بِالرُّعْبِ عَلَى عَدُوِّي مَسِيرَةَ شَهْرٍ، وَبُعِثْتُ إِلَى الْأَحْمَرِ وَالْأَسْوَدِ، وَأُحِلَّتْ لِيَ الْغَنَائِمُ وَلَمْ تَحِلَّ لِنَبِيٍّ كَانَ قَبْلِي، وَأُعْطِيتُ الشَّفَاعَةَ وَهِيَ نَائِلَةٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِي، مَنْ مَاتَ مِنْهُمْ لَا يُشْرِكُ بِاللهِ شَيْئًا
✧ I was granted five things that no prophet before me was granted: the earth was made for me a mosque and a means of purification; I was aided with awe over my enemy for a month's journey; I was sent to the red and the black; spoils of war were made lawful for me, though they were not lawful for any prophet before me; and I was granted intercession, which is attainable for my community: whoever of them dies without associating anything with God.

✧ Did the Messenger of God ﷺ shake hands with you when you met him? He said: He never met me except that he shook my hand. Once I came and was told that the Prophet ﷺ had asked for you, so I went to him, and he met me and embraced me, and that was better and better.

✧ Whoever bathes on Friday, anoints himself with his oil, perfumes himself from the perfume of his house, then comes to the Friday prayer and does not separate two people, then prays, and when the imam speaks, listens and is silent, he will be forgiven what is between him and the next Friday.

أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَهُوَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، فَجَلَسْتُ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: " يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ "، قُلْتُ: لَبَّيْكَ، قَالَ: " أَصَلَّيْتَ ؟ " قُلْتُ: لَا، قَالَ: " قُمْ فَصَلِّ "، فَصَلَّيْتُ، ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ فَجَلَسْتُ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: " يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ، أَسْتَعَذْتَ بِاللهِ مِنْ شَرِّ شَيَاطِينِ الْجِنِّ وَالْإِنْسِ ؟ " قُلْتُ: وَهَلْ لِلْإِنْسِ شَيَاطِينُ ؟ قَالَ: " نَعَمْ، يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ "، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي: أَلَا أَدُلُّكَ عَلَى كَنْزٍ مِنْ كُنُوزِ الْجَنَّةِ ؟ " قُلْتُ: بَلَى، يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي، قَالَ: " لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ، فَإِنَّهَا كَنْزٌ مِنْ كُنُوزِ الْجَنَّةِ " قُلْتُ: فَالصَّلَاةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ: " خَيْرٌ مَوْضُوعٌ، فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَقَلَّ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَكْثَرَ "، قُلْتُ: فَالصَّوْمُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ: " فَرْضٌ مُجْزِئٌ "، قُلْتُ: فَالصَّدَقَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ: " أَضْعَافٌ مُضَاعَفَةٌ وَعِنْدَ اللهِ مَزِيدٌ "، قُلْتُ: فَأَيُّهَا أَفْضَلُ ؟ قَالَ: " جُهْدٌ مِنْ مُقِلٍّ، وَسِرٌّ إِلَى فَقِيرٍ "، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَيُّمَا أَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَلَيْكَ أَعْظَمُ ؟ قَالَ: " اللهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ "، قُلْتُ: فَأَيُّ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ كَانَ أَوَّلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ: " آدَمُ "، قُلْتُ: أَوَنَبِيٌّ كَانَ ؟ قَالَ: " نَعَمْ، نَبِيٌّ مُكَلَّمٌ "، قُلْتُ: كَمْ كَانَ الْمُرْسَلُونَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ: " ثَلَاثُمِائَةٍ وَخَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ جَمًّا غَفِيرًا
✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was in the mosque and sat down with him. He said: O Abu Dharr. I said: At your service. He said: Have you prayed? I said: No. He said: Get up and pray. So I prayed, then came back and sat with him. He said: O Abu Dharr, have you sought refuge in God from the evil of the devils of the jinn and humans? I said: Are there devils among humans? He said: Yes, O Abu Dharr. Then he said to me: Shall I direct you to a treasure from the treasures of Paradise? I said: Yes, O Messenger of God, may my father and mother be your ransom. He said: There is no might and no power except with God, for it is a treasure from the treasures of Paradise. I said: What about prayer, O Messenger of God? He said: A good thing established, so whoever wishes may do little and whoever wishes may do more. I said: What about fasting, O Messenger of God? He said: An obligatory duty that suffices. I said: What about charity, O Messenger of God? He said: Multiplied many times over, and with God is more. I said: Which of them is best? He said: Effort from one of little means, and secrecy to a poor person. I said: O Messenger of God, which verse that God sent down to you is greatest? He said: God, there is no deity but He, the Living, the Eternal. I said: Which of the prophets was first, O Messenger of God? He said: Adam. I said: Was he a prophet? He said: Yes, a prophet with whom God spoke. I said: How many were the messengers, O Messenger of God? He said: Three hundred and fifteen, a great multitude.

كُنَّا عَلَى بَابِ مُعَاوِيَةَ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ، وَمَعَنَا أَبُو ذَرٍّ، فَذَكَرَ أَنَّهُ صَائِمٌ، فَلَمَّا دَخَلْنَا وَوُضِعَتِ الْمَوَائِدُ، جَعَلَ أَبُو ذَرٍّ يَأْكُلُ، قَالَ: فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَحْمَرُ، مَا لَكَ ؟ أَتُرِيدُ أَنْ تَشْغَلَنِي عَنْ طَعَامِي ؟ قُلْتُ: أَلَمْ تُخْبِرْنَا أَنَّكَ صَائِمٌ ؟ أَوْ قُلْتَ: أَلَمْ تَزْعُمْ أَنَّكَ صَائِمٌ ؟ قَالَ: بَلَى، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي: أَقَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآنَ ؟ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: لَعَلَّكَ قَرَأْتَ الْمُفْرَدَةَ مِنْهُ وَلَمْ تَقْرَأِ الْمُضَاعَفَ مَنْ جَاءَ بِالْحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُ عَشْرُ أَمْثَالِهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: صَوْمُ شَهْرِ الصَّبْرِ وَثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ - حَسِبْتُهُ قَالَ: صَوْمُ الدَّهْرِ، وَلَكِنَّ هَذَا الَّذِي لَا شَكَّ فِيهِ - يُذْهِبُ مَغْلَةَ الصَّدْرِ " قَالَ: قُلْتُ: مَا مَغْلَةُ الصَّدْرِ ؟ قَالَ: رِجْزُ الشَّيْطَانِ
✧ We were at the gate of Mu'awiyah (may God have mercy on him), and Abu Dharr was with us. He mentioned that he was fasting. When we entered and the tables were set, Abu Dharr began to eat. He said: I looked at him, and he said: 'O Ahmar, what is wrong with you? Do you want to distract me from my food?' I said: 'Did you not tell us that you were fasting?' Or I said: 'Did you not claim that you were fasting?' He said: 'Yes.' Then he said to me: 'Have you read the Qur'an?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Perhaps you have read the singular form but not the doubled reward: Whoever brings a good deed shall have ten times its like.' Then he said: 'I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: Fasting the month of patience and three days of every month—I think he said: is the fasting of a lifetime, but this is what is certain—removes the malady of the chest.' He said: I said: 'What is the malady of the chest?' He said: 'The filth of Satan.'

" عُرِضَتْ عَلَيَّ أَعْمَالُ أُمَّتِي ; حَسَنُهَا وَسَيِّئُهَا، فَرَأَيْتُ مِنْ أَحْسَنِ أَعْمَالِهِمُ الْأَذَى يُمَاطُ عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ، وَرَأَيْتُ مِنْ سَيِّئِ أَعْمَالِهِمُ النُّخَاعَةَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ لَا تُدْفَنُ
✧ The deeds of my community—their good and their evil—were presented to me. I saw among their best deeds the removal of something harmful from the road, and I saw among their evil deeds the spittle in the mosque that is not buried.

رَأَيْتُ أَبَا ذَرٍّ فِي مَسْجِدِ قُبَاءَ يُصَلِّي وَعَلَيْهِ بُرْدٌ قِطْرِيٌّ، فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ، فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ رَدَّ عَلَيَّ، قُلْتُ: أَنْتَ أَبُو ذَرٍّ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: اجْتَوَيْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ فَأَمَرَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِذَوْدٍ، وَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَشْرَبَ مِنْ أَلْبَانِهَا وَأَبْوَالِهَا - ثُمَّ سَكَتَ أَيُّوبُ عِنْدَ أَبْوَالِهَا - وَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فِي ظِلِّ الْمَسْجِدِ، فَلَمَّا رَآنِي قَالَ: " يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ "، قُلْتُ: هَلَكْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: " وَمَا أَهْلَكَكَ ؟ "، أَوْ قَالَ ": وَمَا ذَاكَ ؟ "، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي أَعْزُبُ عَنِ الْمَاءِ فَتُصِيبُنِي الْجَنَابَةُ، أَفَأُصَلِّي بِغَيْرِ وُضُوءٍ، أَوْ قَالَ: بِغَيْرِ طُهُورٍ ؟ فَدَعَا لِي بِمَاءٍ، فَجَاءَتْ جَارِيَةٌ حَبَشِيَّةٌ بِعُسٍّ فِيهِ مَاءٌ يَتَخَضْخَضُ، مَا هُوَ بِمَلْآنَ، فَاسْتَتَرْتُ بِالْبَعِيرِ وَاغْتَسَلْتُ، قَالَ: وَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ، إِنَّ الصَّعِيدَ الطَّيِّبَ كَافِيكَ وَإِنْ لَمْ تَجِدِ الْمَاءَ عَشْرَ سِنِينَ، فَإِذَا وَجَدْتَ الْمَاءَ فَأَمِسَّهُ جِلْدَكَ
✧ I saw Abu Dharr in the mosque of Quba' praying, wearing a Qatari striped cloak. I greeted him, but he did not return my greeting. When he finished his prayer, he returned my greeting. I said: 'Are you Abu Dharr?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'I found the climate of Madinah unhealthy, so the Messenger of God ﷺ ordered for me a small herd of camels and commanded me to drink from their milk and their urine'—then Ayyub fell silent at 'their urine'—'and I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ among a group of his companions in the shade of the mosque. When he saw me, he said: "O Abu Dharr." I said: "I am ruined, O Messenger of God." He said: "What has ruined you?" or he said: "What is that?" I said: "O Messenger of God, I am far from water and I become junub. Should I pray without wudu'?" or he said: "without purification?" He called for water for me, and a black slave girl came with a wooden bowl containing water that was sloshing, not full. I concealed myself behind the camel and performed ghusl.' He said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me: "O Abu Dharr, pure earth is sufficient for you even if you do not find water for ten years, but when you find water, let it touch your skin."

قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، اسْتَعْمِلْنِي، قَالَ: يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ، إِنَّكَ ضَعِيفٌ، وَإِنَّهَا أَمَانَةٌ، فَهِيَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ خِزْيٌ وَنَدَامَةٌ إِلَّا مَنْ أَخَذَهَا بِحَقِّهَا وَأَدَّى الَّذِي عَلَيْهِ فِيهَا
✧ I said: 'O Messenger of God, appoint me to a position of authority.' He said: 'O Abu Dharr, you are weak, and it is a trust. On the Day of Resurrection it will be disgrace and regret except for one who takes it with its right and fulfills what is due from him in it.'
