✧ Years of drought befell Quraysh, which dried up the udders and emaciated the bones. While I was lying down overcome by grief or troubled, suddenly a caller cried out with a hoarse voice, saying: “O assembly of Quraysh, this Prophet who has been sent—his days have overshadowed you, and this is the time of his rising stars. So hasten to life and fertility! Look for a man among you who is of middle rank, great in stature, large in body, white with radiance, with thick eyelashes, smooth cheeks, and a prominent nose. He has a mark that he suppresses, and a practice that guides to him. Let him and his children set out, and let one man from every clan descend to him. Let them sprinkle water, touch perfume, and touch the corner [of the Kaʿbah]. Then let them climb Abū Qubays, then let the man supplicate and the people say āmīn. Then you will be rained upon as much as you wish.” By Allah, I woke up terrified, my skin trembling and my mind bewildered. I related my vision and lay in the mountain passes of Makkah. By the sanctity and the sacred sanctuary, there remained no one in the valley but that he said, “This is Shaybah al-Ḥamd.” The leaders of Quraysh came to him, and one man from every clan descended to him. They sprinkled, touched, and touched the corner, then climbed Abū Qubays and lined up around him, their pace not slackening until they stood on the summit of the mountain. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib stood, and with him was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a boy who had reached puberty or nearly so. He raised his hand and said: “O Allah, Remover of hardship and Reliever of distress, You are the One who teaches without being taught, and the One who is asked without being withheld from. These are Your male and female servants at the courtyards of Your sanctuary, complaining to You of their year, which has destroyed the camel and the hoofed animal. O Allah, send upon us abundant, fruitful rain.” By the Lord of the Kaʿbah, they did not leave until the sky poured forth its water and the valley overflowed with its torrents. I heard the elders and nobles of Quraysh—ʿAbd Allāh b. Judʿān, Ḥarb b. Umayyah, and Hishām b. al-Mughīrah—saying to ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, “Congratulations to you, O father of the valley, for through you the people of the valley have lived.” And concerning that, Ruqayqah bint Abī Ṣayfī says…

✧ When the Prophet ﷺ came seeking support in al-Ṭā’if, he entered upon me, and I brought him a drink of sawīq. He said, “O Ruqayqah, do not worship their idol and do not pray to it.” She said, “Then they will kill me.” He said, “If they say that to you, say: My Lord is the Lord of this idol. And if you see it, turn your back to it.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left me.

✧ Rāʾiṭah, the sister of ʿAbdullāh al-Thaqafiyyah, was married to Ibn Masʿūd. She was a skillful woman who made things and sold from her craft. She said to Ibn Masʿūd: 'You and your child have kept me too busy to spend in the path of Allah, so I am unable to spend in the path of Allah.' He said: 'I would not like you to do that if you had no reward in it.' So I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: 'Spend on them, for you have the reward of whatever you spend on them.'

✧ She heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrating about the wife of Thābit b. Qays b. Shammās al-Anṣārī that there occurred something between her and her husband, and he was a man of harshness. She came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and spoke with him, and he sent for Thābit b. Qays. They spoke in his presence as Allah willed, then he accepted a ransom from her and she ransomed herself from him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded her to observe an ʿiddah of one menstrual period.

✧ From her mother Ruzaynah, the freedwoman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Hafsah, the Mother of the Believers, visited Aishah, the Mother of the Believers, one day. Sawdah entered upon them wearing a garment of Yemeni cloth and a head covering, and on the inner corners of her eyes were two dots like lentils of aloe and saffron. ‘Alilah said, “I lived to see women adorning themselves with it for their husbands.” Hafsah said to Aishah, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ will enter upon us and find us plain, while she among us is glowing. I will ruin her adornment today.” Aishah said, “Fear Allah, O Hafsah.” Sawdah said, “What are you saying?” She was hard of hearing. She said, “The one-eyed man has come out.” Sawdah said, “The one-eyed man has come out?” She said, “Yes.” She said, “Where shall I hide?” She said, “Go to the tent.” It was a tent made of palm branches where they cooked pots, and in it were spider webs. She went and entered it. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon them while they were laughing, unable to speak to him from laughter. He said, “Why the laughter?” They gestured with their hands toward the tent. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the tent and found Sawdah trembling. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, “What is the matter with you?” She said, “O Messenger of Allah, the one-eyed man has come out.” He said, “He has not come out, and he will never come out.” Then he entered, took her by the hand, and began brushing dust and spider webs off her.

✧ Shaybah bint Al-Aswad, the niece of my mother, told me that my grandmother, Rawdah, said to me, "I used to be a companion to a woman in the city. When the Prophet ﷺ migrated from Makkah to Madinah, my guardian, Rawdah, told me to stand at the door of our house and inform her when this man passes by." She continued, "So I stood and the Prophet ﷺ came with a group of his companions. I held onto a corner of his cloak and he smiled at me. Shaybah said, "I think he wiped his hand on my head." I asked my guardian, "O guardian, this is the man who has come." So my guardian and those who were with her in the house came out. Islam was presented to them, and they embraced Islam." Shaybah added, "Rawdah was with me in the house in Bani Sulaym. Whenever the neighbors purchased a slave, servant, garment, or food, they would say to her, 'O Rawdah, place your hand on it.' And everything she touched would be blessed."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Say: Yes, in what we are able to do.” So we said, “Yes, in what we are able to do.” I said as they said, and my mother said, “Say yes, say yes.”
