✧ Years of drought befell Quraysh, which dried up the udders and emaciated the bones. While I was lying down overcome by grief or troubled, suddenly a caller cried out with a hoarse voice, saying: “O assembly of Quraysh, this Prophet who has been sent—his days have overshadowed you, and this is the time of his rising stars. So hasten to life and fertility! Look for a man among you who is of middle rank, great in stature, large in body, white with radiance, with thick eyelashes, smooth cheeks, and a prominent nose. He has a mark that he suppresses, and a practice that guides to him. Let him and his children set out, and let one man from every clan descend to him. Let them sprinkle water, touch perfume, and touch the corner [of the Kaʿbah]. Then let them climb Abū Qubays, then let the man supplicate and the people say āmīn. Then you will be rained upon as much as you wish.” By Allah, I woke up terrified, my skin trembling and my mind bewildered. I related my vision and lay in the mountain passes of Makkah. By the sanctity and the sacred sanctuary, there remained no one in the valley but that he said, “This is Shaybah al-Ḥamd.” The leaders of Quraysh came to him, and one man from every clan descended to him. They sprinkled, touched, and touched the corner, then climbed Abū Qubays and lined up around him, their pace not slackening until they stood on the summit of the mountain. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib stood, and with him was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a boy who had reached puberty or nearly so. He raised his hand and said: “O Allah, Remover of hardship and Reliever of distress, You are the One who teaches without being taught, and the One who is asked without being withheld from. These are Your male and female servants at the courtyards of Your sanctuary, complaining to You of their year, which has destroyed the camel and the hoofed animal. O Allah, send upon us abundant, fruitful rain.” By the Lord of the Kaʿbah, they did not leave until the sky poured forth its water and the valley overflowed with its torrents. I heard the elders and nobles of Quraysh—ʿAbd Allāh b. Judʿān, Ḥarb b. Umayyah, and Hishām b. al-Mughīrah—saying to ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, “Congratulations to you, O father of the valley, for through you the people of the valley have lived.” And concerning that, Ruqayqah bint Abī Ṣayfī says…
