✧ From her mother Ruzaynah, the freedwoman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Hafsah, the Mother of the Believers, visited Aishah, the Mother of the Believers, one day. Sawdah entered upon them wearing a garment of Yemeni cloth and a head covering, and on the inner corners of her eyes were two dots like lentils of aloe and saffron. ‘Alilah said, “I lived to see women adorning themselves with it for their husbands.” Hafsah said to Aishah, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ will enter upon us and find us plain, while she among us is glowing. I will ruin her adornment today.” Aishah said, “Fear Allah, O Hafsah.” Sawdah said, “What are you saying?” She was hard of hearing. She said, “The one-eyed man has come out.” Sawdah said, “The one-eyed man has come out?” She said, “Yes.” She said, “Where shall I hide?” She said, “Go to the tent.” It was a tent made of palm branches where they cooked pots, and in it were spider webs. She went and entered it. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon them while they were laughing, unable to speak to him from laughter. He said, “Why the laughter?” They gestured with their hands toward the tent. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the tent and found Sawdah trembling. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, “What is the matter with you?” She said, “O Messenger of Allah, the one-eyed man has come out.” He said, “He has not come out, and he will never come out.” Then he entered, took her by the hand, and began brushing dust and spider webs off her.
