✧ Ḥalīmah bt. Abī Dhuʾayb al-Saʿdiyyah of Saʿd b. Bakr b. Hawāzin—and she is the mother of the Prophet ﷺ who suckled him and weaned him—narrated to me; she narrated, saying: A barren, drought-stricken year befell us and left us with nothing, so we went out among a group of women from Banū Saʿd b. Bakr to Makkah seeking suckling infants. When we arrived in Makkah, there was not a woman among us but the Prophet of Allah ﷺ was offered to her, and she would refuse him and dislike him. That was because he had no father, and the wet-nurses only hoped for good from the fathers. A woman would say, "What shall I do with this one? What can his mother do for me?" So they disliked him. She said: He was offered to me, and I refused him. No woman of my people remained but found a suckling infant. When they were about to depart for their lands, I feared returning without a suckling baby, so I said to my husband, "Perhaps I should take that orphan boy; it would be better than returning without a suckling infant." So I went to his mother and took him, and brought him to my dwelling. I had a son whom I was nursing, and he would stay awake much of the night from hunger, unable to sleep. When I put the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to my breasts, they turned to him with whatever milk he wished, until he drank his fill, and his brother drank his fill, and slept. My husband got up in the middle of the night to an old she-camel of ours, by Allah, to see if it would yield a drop of milk. She said: His hand fell upon her udder and found it full of milk, ready to be milked. So he came to me and said, "O daughter of Wahb, by Allah, I think this soul is blessed." Then he told me the news of the old she-camel, and I told him the news of what I had seen from my breasts that night. We went out riding a she-donkey of ours that had previously been too weak to catch up with the other donkeys. When we were upon it heading toward our lands, it would go ahead of the people until they would shout at me, "Woe to you, O daughter of Abū Dhuʾayb! You have left us behind. This she-donkey of yours has something special about it." She said: We arrived with him in the lands of Banū Saʿd b. Bakr, and we knew nothing but blessing. Indeed, our shepherd would go out with our sheep and graze them, and our people would send out their sheep. When it was near night, they returned, and our sheep would come back full of milk, while not a single sheep among theirs yielded a drop. They would say to their shepherds, "Woe to you! Graze where the shepherd of the daughter of Abū Dhuʾayb grazes." She said: It remained like that with us. Then one day he was behind our houses among some young lambs of ours, playing with his brother, when his brother came running and said, "That Qurayshī brother of mine has been killed!" So we hurried to him, his father and I, and met him with a pale face. We began to embrace him, sometimes I and sometimes his father, saying to him, "What is the matter with you, O my son?" He would say, "I do not know. Two men came to me, threw me down, split open my belly, and began stirring it." His father turned to me and said, "I think this boy has been afflicted. Take him to his family quickly before the matter gets worse for us." She said: I had no goal until I brought him to Makkah to his mother, and I said to her, "O foster mother, I have weaned my son and he has recovered from the ailment, so keep him." She said, "What is the matter with you, are you abandoning him? You used to ask me to leave him with you—it is as if you fear Satan for him." First, let me tell you about myself and about him: When I gave birth to him, I saw that a light came out of me that illuminated the palaces of Buṣrā in the land of Syria.

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ «أَسْفِرُوا بِالْفَجْرِ فَإِنَّهُ أَعْظَمُ لِلْأَجْرِ»
✧ I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: “Perform the Fajr prayer when it is bright, for that is greater in reward.”

✧ Habiba bt. Sahl was married to Thabit b. Qays b. Shammas al-Ansari, and she disliked him, for he was an ugly man. She came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I see him, and were it not for fear of Allah, I would spit in his face.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Will you return to him his garden that he gave you as a dower?” She said: “Yes.” He sent for him, and she returned to him his garden, and he separated the two of them. That was the first khulʿ in Islam.

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'That is not menstruation, but rather it is a vein, so perform ghusl.' So she would perform ghusl at the time of every prayer, and she would perform ghusl in a large basin, and one could see the yellowish tinge of blood in the basin."

✧ "I used to have a long, heavy menstrual period, so I went to the Prophet ﷺ to seek his advice and inform him about it. I found him in my sister Zainab's house, so I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have a need.' He said, 'What is it? May Allah facilitate it for you.' I said, 'I have a long, heavy menstrual period that prevents me from praying and fasting. What should I do?' He said, 'Use a piece of cloth called a qursuf, as it takes away the blood.' I said, 'It is more than that.' He said, 'Then use a tampon.' I said, 'It is more than that.' He said, 'Then wear a cloth.' She said, 'It is more than that, O Messenger of Allah. It only stops during the hajj ministration.' He said, 'I will tell you two options; whichever one you choose and do, you will be exempted from the other. If you can handle both of them, then you know your situation best.' He said, 'This is a rukhsah (dispensation) from among the dispensations of Satan.' He said, 'You will menstruate for six or seven days, according to the knowledge of Allah, then take a bath. When you see that you have become pure and are certain about it, then pray twenty-four nights and days, or three and twenty nights and days, and fast. This will be sufficient for you.' He said, 'Do this every month, like how women menstruate and become pure according to their menstrual and purification times. If you are able to delay the Dhuhr (noon) prayer and hasten the Asr (afternoon) prayer, then take a bath for both of them. If you are able to delay the Maghrib (sunset) prayer and hasten the Isha (evening) prayer, then take a bath for both of them. Combine between the prayers and take a bath with the Fajr (dawn) prayer. Do the same during fasting if you are able to do so.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'And it is most amazing that you use a tampon.' Meaning, seek forgiveness."

I said: 'O Messenger of God, I have a need to discuss with you.' He said: 'What is it, O you?' I said: 'O Messenger of God, it is a matter about which—by God—there is no escape, and I am shy about it.' He said: 'What is it, O you?' I said: 'O Messenger of God, I suffer from severe, heavy prolonged menstrual bleeding. What do you think about it? It has prevented me from praying and fasting.' He said to her: 'I prescribe for you cotton, for it will take away the blood.' I said: 'It is more than that.' He said: 'Indeed, I will command you with two matters; whichever of them you do, it will suffice you in place of the other. If you are able to do both, you know best. This is only a strike from the strikes of Satan. So pray and fast for twenty-four nights and their days, for that will suffice you; and do likewise every month, just as women menstruate and become pure according to the time of their menstruation and purity. If you are able to delay the noon prayer and hasten the afternoon prayer, and perform ghusl once for both, then pray the noon and afternoon prayers together, then delay the sunset prayer and hasten the night prayer and combine the two prayers, then do so. And perform ghusl with the dawn prayer, and pray accordingly; do so, and pray and fast if you are able to do that.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'And this is more pleasing to me.'"

Upon hearing this, the eyes of the Prophet ﷺ filled with tears and he said, "He spoke the truth, for who is more deserving of justice than me, the Messenger of Allah? By the sanctity of Allah, a nation will not be honored if the weak do not receive their rights from the strong, and the strong do not protect them."
