✧ Ḥalīmah bt. Abī Dhuʾayb al-Saʿdiyyah of Saʿd b. Bakr b. Hawāzin—and she is the mother of the Prophet ﷺ who suckled him and weaned him—narrated to me; she narrated, saying: A barren, drought-stricken year befell us and left us with nothing, so we went out among a group of women from Banū Saʿd b. Bakr to Makkah seeking suckling infants. When we arrived in Makkah, there was not a woman among us but the Prophet of Allah ﷺ was offered to her, and she would refuse him and dislike him. That was because he had no father, and the wet-nurses only hoped for good from the fathers. A woman would say, "What shall I do with this one? What can his mother do for me?" So they disliked him. She said: He was offered to me, and I refused him. No woman of my people remained but found a suckling infant. When they were about to depart for their lands, I feared returning without a suckling baby, so I said to my husband, "Perhaps I should take that orphan boy; it would be better than returning without a suckling infant." So I went to his mother and took him, and brought him to my dwelling. I had a son whom I was nursing, and he would stay awake much of the night from hunger, unable to sleep. When I put the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to my breasts, they turned to him with whatever milk he wished, until he drank his fill, and his brother drank his fill, and slept. My husband got up in the middle of the night to an old she-camel of ours, by Allah, to see if it would yield a drop of milk. She said: His hand fell upon her udder and found it full of milk, ready to be milked. So he came to me and said, "O daughter of Wahb, by Allah, I think this soul is blessed." Then he told me the news of the old she-camel, and I told him the news of what I had seen from my breasts that night. We went out riding a she-donkey of ours that had previously been too weak to catch up with the other donkeys. When we were upon it heading toward our lands, it would go ahead of the people until they would shout at me, "Woe to you, O daughter of Abū Dhuʾayb! You have left us behind. This she-donkey of yours has something special about it." She said: We arrived with him in the lands of Banū Saʿd b. Bakr, and we knew nothing but blessing. Indeed, our shepherd would go out with our sheep and graze them, and our people would send out their sheep. When it was near night, they returned, and our sheep would come back full of milk, while not a single sheep among theirs yielded a drop. They would say to their shepherds, "Woe to you! Graze where the shepherd of the daughter of Abū Dhuʾayb grazes." She said: It remained like that with us. Then one day he was behind our houses among some young lambs of ours, playing with his brother, when his brother came running and said, "That Qurayshī brother of mine has been killed!" So we hurried to him, his father and I, and met him with a pale face. We began to embrace him, sometimes I and sometimes his father, saying to him, "What is the matter with you, O my son?" He would say, "I do not know. Two men came to me, threw me down, split open my belly, and began stirring it." His father turned to me and said, "I think this boy has been afflicted. Take him to his family quickly before the matter gets worse for us." She said: I had no goal until I brought him to Makkah to his mother, and I said to her, "O foster mother, I have weaned my son and he has recovered from the ailment, so keep him." She said, "What is the matter with you, are you abandoning him? You used to ask me to leave him with you—it is as if you fear Satan for him." First, let me tell you about myself and about him: When I gave birth to him, I saw that a light came out of me that illuminated the palaces of Buṣrā in the land of Syria.
