كُنْتُ أَمْشِي مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَانْتَهَى إِلَى سُبَاطَةِ قَوْمٍ، " فَبَالَ قَائِمًا فَدَعَانِي، فَقَالَ: لِمَ تَنَحَّيْتَ ؟ " فَجِئْتُ حَتَّى كُنْتُ عِنْدَ عَقِبَيْهِ، ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِمَاءٍ " فَتَوَضَّأَ، وَمَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ
✧ I was walking with the Prophet ﷺ and he came to a rubbish dump of a people and urinated standing. He called me and said, "Why did you keep away?" So I came until I was at his heels. Then water was brought and he performed ablution and wiped over his leather socks.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed wine, the one who pours it, the one who drinks it, the one who presses it, the one for whom it is pressed, the one who carries it, the one to whom it is carried, the one who sells it, the one who buys it, and the one who consumes its price.

خَرَجْتُ أَنَا، وَزَيْدُ بْنُ صُوحَانَ، وَسَلْمَانُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ، فَالْتَقَطْتُ سَوْطًا، فَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَتْرُكَهُ فَأَبَيْتُ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ ذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِأُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ فَقَالَ: أَصَبْتَ إِنِّي الْتَقَطْتُ زَمَانَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِائَةَ دِينَارٍ، فَأَخْبَرْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بِهَا، فَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ أُعَرِّفَهَا سَنَةً، ثُمَّ أَخْبَرْتُهُ أَنَّهَا لَمْ تُعْرَفْ، ثُمَّ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أُعَرِّفَهَا، فَعَرَّفْتُهَا سَنَةً، ثُمَّ أَخْبَرْتُهُ أَنَّهَا لَمْ تُعْرَفْ، ثُمَّ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أُعَرِّفَهَا، فَعَرَّفْتُهَا سَنَةً، ثُمَّ أَخْبَرْتُهُ أَنَّهَا لَمْ تُعْرَفْ، فَقَالَ: اعْرِفْ وِعَاءَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا، ثُمَّ اقْضِ بِهَا حَاجَتَكَ، فَإِنْ جَاءَ لَهَا طَالِبٌ رَدَدْتَهَا
✧ I went out with Zayd b. Suhan and Salman b. Rabi'ah, and I picked up a whip. They told me to leave it, but I refused. When we arrived in Madinah, I mentioned that to Ubayy b. Ka'b, and he said: You did the right thing. During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I picked up a purse containing one hundred dinars. I told the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it, and he instructed me to announce it for a year. I told him that it had not been claimed. Then he instructed me to announce it again, so I announced it for another year. I told him that it had not been claimed. Then he instructed me to announce it again, so I announced it for a third year. I told him that it had not been claimed. He said: "Remember its container and its tie, then use it for your needs. If someone comes looking for it, return it to him."

إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَّى بِنَا يَوْمًا، ثُمَّ رَقِيَ الْمِنْبَرَ، فَأَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ قِبَلَ قِبْلَةِ الصَّلَاةِ، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ: قَدْ رَأَيْتُ الْآنَ مُنْذُ صَلَّيْتُ لَكُمُ الْجَنَّةَ وَالنَّارَ قِبَلَ هَذَا الْجِدَارِ، وَلَمْ أَرَ كَالْيَوْمِ فِي الْخَيْرِ وَالشَّرِّ " ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer one day, then ascended the pulpit and pointed with his hand toward the direction of Qiblah. When he finished, he said: "Just now, since I prayed with you, I have seen Paradise and Hell displayed before this wall. I have never seen anything like today in good and evil" — three times.

✧ Uthman ؓ performed ablution washing each part three times, then said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ablution like my ablution.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever performs ablution like this ablution of mine, then prays two rak'ahs without letting his mind wander to anything but good, his previous sins will be forgiven.'

✧ I came from a journey and went to the Prophet ﷺ. He said: 'When you come to your wife, act wisely.' So I came to my wife and said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When you come to your wife, act wisely.' She said to me: 'Here I am.'

فِي قَوْلِهِ: إِنَّا كَفَيْنَاكَ الْمُسْتَهْزِئِينَ، وَقَالَ: الْمُسْتَهْزِئِينَ الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ، وَالْأَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ يَغُوثَ، وَالْأَسْوَدُ بْنُ الْمُطَّلِبِ أَبُو زَمْعَةَ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعُزَّى، وَالْحَارِثُ بْنُ غَيْطَلٍ السَّهْمِيُّ، وَالْعَاصُ بْنُ وَائِلٍ السَّهْمِيُّ. فَأَتَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ فَشَكَاهُمْ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَأَرَاهُ أَبَا عَمْرٍو الْوَلِيدَ بْنَ الْمُغِيرَةِ، فَأَوْمَأَ جِبْرِيلُ إِلَى أَبْجَلِهِ، فَقَالَ: مَا صَنَعْتَ شَيْئًا ؟ فَقَالَ: كَفَيْتُكَهُ، ثُمَّ أَرَاهُ الْحَارِثَ بْنَ غَيْطَلٍ السَّهْمِيَّ، فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَى بَطْنِهِ، فَقَالَ: مَا صَنَعْتَ شَيْئًا ؟ فَقَالَ: كَفَيْتُكَهُ، ثُمَّ أَرَاهُ الْعَاصَ بْنَ وَائِلٍ السَّهْمِيَّ، فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَى أَخْمَصِهِ، فَقَالَ: مَا صَنَعْتَ شَيْئًا ؟ فَقَالَ: كَفَيْتُكَهُ، فَأَمَّا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ، فَمَرَّ بِرَجُلٍ مِنْ خُزَاعَةَ، وَهُوَ يَرِيشُ نَبْلًا لَهُ، فَأَصَابَ أَبْجَلَهُ فَقَطَعَهَا، وَأَمَّا الْأَسْوَدُ بْنُ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَعَمِيَ، فَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ يَقُولُ: عَمِيَ كَذَا، وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ يَقُولُ: نَزَلَ تَحْتَ شَجَرَةٍ، فَجَعَلَ يَقُولُ: يَا بَنِيَّ، أَلَا تَدْفَعُونَ عَنِّي ؟ قَدْ هَلَكْتُ أُطْعَنُ بِشَوْكٍ فِي عَيْنِي، فَجَعَلُوا يَقُولُونَ: مَا نَرَى شَيْئًا، فَلَمْ يَزَلْ كَذَلِكَ حَتَّى عَمِيَتْ عَيْنَاهُ، وَأَمَّا الْأَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ يَغُوثَ فَخَرَجَ فِي رَأْسِهِ قُرُوحٌ فَمَاتَ مِنْهَا، وَأَمَّا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ غَيْطَلٍ فَأَخَذَهُ الْمَاءُ الْأَصْفَرُ فِي بَطْنِهِ حَتَّى خَرَجَ خُرْؤُهُ مِنْ فِيهِ فَمَاتَ مِنْهَا، وَأَمَّا الْعَاصُ بْنُ وَائِلٍ فَبَيْنَمَا هُوَ كَذَلِكَ يَوْمًا حَتَّى دَخَلَ فِي رِجْلِهِ شِبْرِقَةٌ حَتَّى امْتَلَأَتْ مِنْهَا فَمَاتَ
✧ Regarding His statement, “Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers” (Q 15:95), he said: The mockers were al-Walid b. al-Mughira, al-Aswad b. Abd Yaghuth, al-Aswad b. al-Muttalib Abu Zam'ah from Banu Asad b. Abd al-Uzza, al-Harith b. Ghaytal al-Sahmi, and al-As b. Wa'il al-Sahmi. Then Jibril ﷺ came to him, and the Messenger of God ﷺ complained about them to him. So he showed him Abu Amr al-Walid b. al-Mughira, and Jibril gestured to his vein, and he said, “You have not done anything.” He replied, “I have sufficed you against him.” Then he showed him al-Harith b. Ghaytal al-Sahmi, and he gestured to his belly, and he said, “You have not done anything.” He replied, “I have sufficed you against him.” Then he showed him al-As b. Wa'il al-Sahmi, and he gestured to the sole of his foot, and he said, “You have not done anything.” He replied, “I have sufficed you against him.” As for al-Walid b. al-Mughira, he passed by a man from Khuza'ah who was fletching arrows, and an arrow struck his vein and severed it. As for al-Aswad b. al-Muttalib, he became blind. Some say he became blind in such a way, and others say he went down under a tree and began saying, “O my sons, will you not defend me? I am perishing, being pierced by a thorn in my eye.” They kept saying, “We see nothing.” It continued like that until his eyes became blind. As for al-Aswad b. Abd Yaghuth, sores broke out on his head and he died from them. As for al-Harith b. Ghaytal, the yellow water seized him in his belly until his excrement came out of his mouth, and he died from it. As for al-As b. Wa'il, while he was like that one day, a thorny splinter entered his foot until it filled with pus, and he died.

حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ، وَفِي الْقَوْمِ مَنْ لَيْسَ عَلَى وُضُوءٍ، " فَدَعَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِمِخْضَبٍ، فَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ فِيهِ، فَجَعَلَ الْمَاءُ يَنْبُعُ مِنْ بَيْنِ أَصَابِعِهِ حَتَّى تَوَضَّئُوا، وَكُنَّا قَرِيبًا مِنْ ثَمَانِينَ
✧ The prayer time arrived, and among the people there were some who did not have wudu. So the Prophet ﷺ called for a large bowl, placed his hand in it, and water began to gush from between his fingers until they all performed wudu. We were nearly eighty.

✧ The best of warriors in the path of God is their servant, then the one who brings them news. The one most distinguished in rank before God is the fasting one. And whoever draws a water skin for his companions in the path of God will precede them to Paradise by seventy degrees or seventy years.

قَالَ دِحْيَةُ بْنُ خَلِيفَةَ الْكَلْبِيُّ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَلَا نُنْزِي لَكَ حِمَارًا عَلَى فَرَسٍ، فَتُنْتِجُ لَكَ بَغْلَةً تَرْكَبُهَا ؟ فَقَالَ: إِنَّمَا يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
✧ Dihya b. Khalifa al-Kalbi said: 'O Messenger of God, shall we not mate a donkey with a horse for you, so that it produces for you a mule that you can ride?' He said: 'Only those who do not know do that.'

قَالَ لِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: يَا عَلِيُّ، أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ دُعَاءً إِذَا دَعَوْتَ بِهِ غُفِرَ لَكَ، وَإِنْ كُنْتَ مَغْفُورًا لَكَ ؟ قَالَ: بَلَى، قَالَ: " لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظِيمُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ الْعَلِيُّ الْكَرِيمُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ
✧ The Prophet ﷺ said to me: 'O Ali, shall I not teach you a supplication that if you call upon God with it, you will be forgiven, even if you were already forgiven?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'There is no god but God, the Most High, the Magnificent. There is no god but God, the Most High, the Generous. There is no god but God, Lord of the Magnificent Throne.'

قِيلَ لَهُ: إِنَّكَ قَدْ أَحْسَنْتَ الثَّنَاءَ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ؟ قَالَ: وَمَا يَمْنَعُنِي مِنْ ذَلِكَ، وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: اقْرَءُوا الْقُرْآنَ عَنْ أَرْبَعَةٍ: عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، وَسَالِمٍ مَوْلَى أَبِي حُذَيْفَةَ، وَأُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، وَمُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ " ؟ ثُمَّ قَالَ: " لَقَدْ هَمَمْتُ أَنْ أَبْعَثَهُمْ إِلَى الْأُمَمِ كَمَا بَعَثَ عِيسَى الْحَوَارِيِّينَ "، قِيلَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَفَلَا تَبْعَثُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ، وَعُمَرَ فَهُمَا أَفْضَلُ ؟ قَالَ: " إِنَّهُ لَا غِنًى بِي عَنْهُمَا، إِنَّهُمَا مِنْ هَذَا الدِّينِ بِمَنْزِلَةِ السَّمْعِ وَالْبَصَرِ مِنَ الرَّأْسِ
✧ It was said to him: 'You have spoken well of Abdullah b. Masud?' He said: 'What prevents me from that, when I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "Learn the Quran from four: from Abdullah b. Masud, Salim the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfa, Ubayy b. Kab, and Muadh b. Jabal." Then he said: "I have considered sending them to the nations as Jesus sent the disciples." It was said: "O Messenger of God, why not send Abu Bakr and Umar, for they are better?" He said: "I cannot do without them. They are to this religion like hearing and sight are to the head."

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، فَلَمَّا خَرَجْتُ دَعَانِي قَالَ: أَضَعُ عِنْدَكَ حَدِيثًا يَا ابْنَ أَخِي، سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَشْهَدُ لَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: طَلْحَةُ مِمَّنْ قَضَى نَحْبَهُ
✧ I entered upon Muawiya b. Abi Sufyan, and when I left he called me and said: 'Shall I entrust you with a hadith, O nephew, which I heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ?' Then he said: 'I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: Talha is among those who have fulfilled their vow.'
