أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بِأُمِّ حَبِيبٍ بِنْتِ الْعَبَّاسِ وَهِيَ صُبَيَّةٌ فَوَضَعْتُهَا فِي حِجْرِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَبَالَتْ فَلَكَمَتْ فِي ظَهْرِهَا ثُمَّ احْتَمَلَتْهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَهْ ثُمَّ دَعَا بِقَدَحٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ فَصَبَّهُ عَلَى مَبَالِهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ «اسْلُكُوا بِالْمَاءِ فِي سَبِيلِ الْمَبُولِ»
✧ I brought Umm Ḥabībah bt. al-ʿAbbās to the Prophet ﷺ when she was a little girl, and I placed her in the lap of the Prophet ﷺ. She urinated, so I struck her on the back, then picked her up. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Stop.” Then he called for a cup of water and poured it over the place where she had urinated, then said, “Pour water over the place of urination.”

✧ While I was sitting at the head of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was ill, I wept. He said: “What makes you weep?” I said: I fear for you, and we do not know what we will face from the people after you. He said: “You are the ones who will be deemed weak after me.”

قُلْتُ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ فِي الْمَنَامِ كَأَنَّ طَائِفَةً مِنْكَ فِي بَيْتِي فَقَالَ خَيْرًا تَلِدُ فَاطِمَةُ غُلَامًا فَتُرْضِعِيهِ فِي بَيْتِكِ فَوَلَدَتْ حَسَنًا فَكَانَ فِي بَيْتِي فَأَتَيْتُ بِهِ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَبَالَ عَلَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَلْقِ هَذَا الثَّوْبَ أَغْسِلْهُ فَقَالَ «إِنَّمَا يُغْسَلُ بَوْلُ الْإِنَاثِ وَلَا يُغْسَلُ بَوْلُ الذِّكْرِ»
✧ I said to the Prophet ﷺ, “I saw in a dream as if a part of you was in my house.” He said, “Good. Fatimah will give birth to a boy and you will nurse him in your house.” Then she gave birth to Hasan, and he was in my house. I brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he urinated on him. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, throw away this garment so that I may wash it.” He said, “The urine of females is washed, and the urine of a male is not washed.”

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ دَخَلَ عَلَى الْعَبَّاسِ وَهُوَ شَاكٌّ فَتَمَنَّى الْعَبَّاسُ الْمَوْتَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يَا عَمُّ لَا تَتَمَنَّ الْمَوْتَ فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ مُحْسِنًا فَأِنْ تُؤَخِّرُ تَزْدَادُ حُسْنًا إِلَى إِحْسَانِكَ وَإِنْ كُنْتَ مُسِيئًا فَإِنْ تُؤَخِّرُ تَسْتَعْتِبُ مِنْ إِسَاءَتِكَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ فَلَا تَتَمَنَّ الْمَوْتَ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon al-Abbas while he was ill and wishing for death. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “O uncle, do not wish for death, for if you are a good-doer, then being delayed will increase you in good upon your good, and if you are an evildoer, then being delayed so that you may seek pardon for your evil is better for you. So do not wish for death.”

يُقَالُ لَهُ دَاوُدُ وَلَدَتْهُ أُمُّ حَبِيبَةَ بِنْتُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَنْ لَيْلَى بِنْتِ قَانِفٍ الثَّقَفِيَّةُ قَالَتْ «كُنْتُ فِيمَنِ غَسَّلَ أُمَّ كُلْثُومٍ بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَكَانَ أَوَّلُ مَا أَعْطَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْحَقْوَ ثُمَّ الدِّرْعَ ثُمَّ الْخِمَارَ ثُمَّ الْمِلْحَفَةَ ثُمَّ أُدْرِجَتْ فِي الثَّوْبِ الْأَخِيرِ»
✧ He is called Dawud; Umm Habibah bt. Abi Sufyan gave birth to him. From Layla bt. Qanif al-Thaqafiyyah, she said: “I was among those who washed Umm Kulthum, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The first thing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us was the waist-wrapper, then the shift, then the head-cover, then the outer sheet, then she was wrapped in the final garment.”

«صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمَغْرِبَ فِي بَيْتِهِ فِي ثَوْبٍ مُتَوَشِّحًا بِهِ مَا صَلَّى صَلَاةً بَعْدَهَا حَتَّى قُبِضَ ﷺ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed Maghrib with us in his house, wearing a single garment wrapped around him. He did not pray any prayer after it until he was taken ﷺ.

✧ O Messenger of Allah, I had a wife and I married another woman in addition to her, and the first one claimed that she had breastfed the younger one. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “One suckling or two sucklings do not create a marriage prohibition.”

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ أنا مَالِكٌ عَنْ أَبِي النَّضْرِ مَوْلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَعْمَرٍ عَنْ عُمَيْرٍ مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ أُمِّ الْفَضْلِ بِنْتِ الْحَارِثِ أَنَّ نَاسًا اخْتَلَفُوا عِنْدَهَا يَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ فِي رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ هُوَ صَائِمٌ وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ لَيْسَ بِصَائِمٍ فَأَرْسَلَتْ إِلَيْهِ بِقَدَحٍ مِنْ لَبَنٍ وَهُوَ وَاقِفٌ عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ فَشَرِبَ بِعَرَفَةَ
✧ Al-Qa‘nabi narrated to us from Malik. And Bakr b. Sahl narrated to us: ‘Abd Allah b. Yusuf narrated to us: Malik informed us from Abu al-Nadr, the freedman of ‘Umar b. ‘Ubayd Allah b. Ma‘mar, from ‘Umayr, the freedman of Ibn ‘Abbas, from Umm al-Fadl bt. al-Harith, that some people differed in her presence on the day of ‘Arafah about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Some said he was fasting, and others said he was not fasting. So she sent him a bowl of milk while he was standing on his camel, and he drank it at ‘Arafah.

✧ They were uncertain about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at ‘Arafah. Umm al-Fadl said: “I will resolve that for you.” So she sent him a large cup of milk and he drank from it.

✧ He heard Umm al-Fadl saying, "People had doubts about fasting on the Day of Arafah, while we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I sent him a container of milk and he drank it while he was in Arafah."

جَاءَتْ أُمُّ الْفَضْلِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ بَعْضَ جِسْمَكَ فِي بَيْتِي قَالَ نِعْمَ مَا رَأَيْتِ تَلِدُ فَاطِمَةُ غُلَامًا وَتُرْضِعِيهِ بِلَبَنٍ قُثَمٍ قَالَتْ فَأَتَتْ بِهِ تَحْمِلُهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَخَذَتْهُ فَوَضَعَتْهُ فِي حِجْرِهِ فَبَالَ فَلَطَمْتُهُ بِيَدِهَا فَقَالَ «أَوْجَعْتِ ابْنِي رَحِمَكِ اللهُ» قَالَتْ هَاتِ إِزَارَكَ حَتَّى نَغْسِلَهُ فَقَالَ «إِنَّمَا يُغْسَلُ بَوْلُ الْجَارِيَةِ وَيُنْضَحُ بَوْلُ الْغُلَامِ»
✧ Umm al-Fadl came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “I saw part of your body in my house.” He said, “Good is what you saw. Fatimah will give birth to a boy and you will nurse him with the milk of Qutham.” She said, “So she brought him, carrying him, to the Prophet ﷺ. Then she took him and placed him in his lap, and he urinated. So I slapped him with her hand, and he said, ‘You have hurt my son, may Allah have mercy on you.’ She said, ‘Give me your waist-wrapper so that we may wash it.’ He said, ‘The urine of a girl is washed, and the urine of a boy is sprinkled.’”

✧ Umm al-Fadl said, “O Messenger of Allah, I saw as if part of your body was in my house.” He said, “Good. Fatimah will give birth and you will nurse him.” Then she gave birth to Hasan or Husayn, and she nursed him. Then she brought him to the Prophet ﷺ one day and placed him in his lap, and he urinated, so she struck his shoulder. The Prophet ﷺ said, “You have hurt my son, may Allah have mercy on you.””

✧ Al-Hasan b. Ali urinated in the lap of the Prophet ﷺ, so I said, “Give me your garment and wear another.” He said, “The urine of a female is washed, and the urine of a male is sprinkled.”

أَنَّهَا أَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ فِي الْمَنَامِ حُلْمًا مُنْكَرًا فَقَالَ وَمَا هُوَ؟ قَالَتْ أَصْلَحَكَ اللهُ إِنَّهُ شَدِيدٌ قَالَ فَمَا هُوَ؟ قَالَتْ رَأَيْتُ كَأَنَّ بَضْعَةً مِنْ جَسَدِكَ قُطِعَتْ ثُمَّ وُضِعَتْ فِي حِجْرِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خَيْرًا رَأَيْتِ تَلِدُ فَاطِمَةُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ غُلَامًا يَكُونُ فِي حِجْرِكِ فَوَلَدَتْ فَاطِمَةُ حَسَنًا فَكَانَ فِي حِجْرِهَا فَدَخَلْتُ بِهِ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَوَضَعْتُهُ فَبَالَ عَلَيْهِ فَذَهَبْتُ أَتَنَاوَلُهُ فَقَالَ «دَعِي ابْنِي فَإِنَّ ابْنِي لَيْسَ بِنَجِسٍ ثُمَّ دَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَصَبَّهُ عَلَيْهِ»
✧ She came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I saw in a dream a distressing vision.” He said, “And what is it?” She said, “May Allah keep you righteous; it is severe.” He said, “What is it?” She said, “I saw as if a piece of your body was cut off and then placed in my lap.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Good have you seen. Fatimah will give birth, if Allah wills, to a boy who will be in your lap.” Then Fatimah gave birth to Hasan, and he was in her lap. I entered with him upon the Prophet ﷺ and placed him, and he urinated on him. I went to take him, and he said, “Leave my son, for my son is not impure.” Then he called for water and poured it on him.

✧ From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: He stood one night in Makkah during the night and said, “O Allah, have I conveyed?” three times. Then Umar b. al-Khattab stood up and said, “O Allah, yes. You have striven, advised, and exerted yourself.” In the morning he said, “Faith shall certainly prevail until it drives disbelief back to its homelands, and they shall certainly cross the seas with Islam. And there shall come upon people a time when they learn the Quran, and they learn it and recite it, then they say, ‘We have recited and we have learned, so who is better than us?’ Is there any harm in those?” They said, “No, O Messenger of Allah. And who are those?” He said, “Those are the fuel of the Fire.”

✧ “Where to, O Umm Abdullah?” I said, “You have harmed us in our religion, so we go in Allah’s land where we will not be harmed in the worship of Allah.” He said, “May Allah accompany you.” Then he left, and my husband Amir b. Rabi’ah came to me, and I told him about the softness I saw in Umar. He said, “Do you hope that he will become Muslim?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “By Allah, he will not become Muslim until the donkey of al-Khattab becomes Muslim.”

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in to see me, and I brought him some fruit or food. Some of the people withdrew and did not eat. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What is the matter with them?" I said, "They are fasting." He said, "No fasting person has people who are not fasting eat in his presence except that the angels send blessings upon them until evening."

✧ From Maymunah - not Maymunah the wife of the Prophet ﷺ - that she said, "O Messenger of Allah, give us a ruling about Bayt al-Maqdis." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is the land of gathering and resurrection. Go to it and pray in it, for a prayer in it is like a thousand prayers." She said, "What do you think about someone who is unable to undertake the journey to go there?" He said, "If he cannot do that, then let him send oil to it to be used as fuel for its lamps. Whoever sends a gift to it is like one who prayed in it."

✧ She said: Give us a ruling, O Messenger of God, about the ghusl from janābah. He said: Wet the roots of the hair and clean the skin, for the likeness of those who do not perform the ghusl well is like a tree that water strikes, yet its leaves do not sprout and its roots are not watered. So fear God and perform the ghusl well, for it is among the trust you have been charged with and the secrets you have been entrusted with. She said: I said: How much water suffices for the head, O Messenger of God? He said: Three handfuls.

✧ I said: O Messenger of God, may one of us eat while he is junub? He said: He should not eat until he performs wuḍūʾ. She said: I said: O Messenger of God, may the junub sleep? He said: I do not like that he sleep while he is junub until he performs wuḍūʾ and does his wuḍūʾ well, for I fear that he may die and Jibrīl ﷺ will not attend him.

✧ She said: Give us a ruling, O Messenger of God, about a man who erred in his prayer and does not know how much he prayed. He said: He should depart, then stand in his prayer until he knows how much he prayed, for that is only whispering that comes to him and makes him forget his prayer.

✧ From Maymūnah bt. Saʿd, who was a servant of the Prophet ﷺ, she said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: The likeness of a woman who walks proudly in adornment in other than her own people is like the darkness of the Day of Resurrection: she has no light.
