حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ عَنْ أُمِّهِ لَيْلَى قَالَتْ §كَانَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ مِنْ أَشَدِّ النَّاسِ عَلَيْنَا فِي إِسْلَامِنَا فَلَمَّا تَهَيَّأْنَا لِلْخُرُوجِ إِلَى أَرْضِ الْحَبَشَةِ جَاءَنِي عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ وَأَنَا عَلَى بَعِيرِي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَتَوَجَّهَ فَقَالَ
أَيْنَ يَا أُمَّ عَبْدِ اللهِ؟ فَقُلْتُ آذَيْتُمُونَا فِي دِينِنَا فَنَذْهَبُ فِي أَرْضِ اللهِ حَيْثُ لَا نُؤْذَى فِي عِبَادَةِ اللهِ قَالَ صَحِبَكُمُ اللهُ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ فَجَاءَنِي زَوْجِي عَامِرُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِمَا رَأَيْتُهُ مِنْ رِقَّةِ عُمَرَ فَقَالَ تُرَجِّينَ أَنْ يُسْلِمَ؟ فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ وَاللهِ لَا يُسْلِمُ حَتَّى يُسْلِمَ حِمَارُ الْخَطَّابِ

✧ “Where to, O Umm Abdullah?” I said, “You have harmed us in our religion, so we go in Allah’s land where we will not be harmed in the worship of Allah.” He said, “May Allah accompany you.” Then he left, and my husband Amir b. Rabi’ah came to me, and I told him about the softness I saw in Umar. He said, “Do you hope that he will become Muslim?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “By Allah, he will not become Muslim until the donkey of al-Khattab becomes Muslim.”
