✧ When Uthman ؓ was writing the mushafs, they were uncertain about three verses, so they wrote them on the shoulder blade of a sheep. And they sent me to Ubayy b. Ka'b and Zayd b. Thabit ؓ. I entered upon them and handed it to Ubayy b. Ka'b ؓ, and he read it and found in it: "There is no alteration for the creation; that is the upright religion." So he wiped away with his hand ؓ one of the two lams and wrote it: "There is no alteration for Allah's creation." He said: And he found ؓ in it: "Look at your food and your drink; it has not changed with time." So he wiped away the nun and wrote it: "it has not changed with time." And he read ؓ from it: "So give respite to the disbelievers." So he wiped away the alif and wrote it: "So give respite." He said ؓ: And I do not know him except that he said regarding it, then Zayd b. Thabit ؓ looked at it, then I departed with it to Uthman ؓ, and they established it in the mushafs as such.

✧ “When one of you rises at night (to pray), let him recite aloud, for the Shaytan and the wicked jinn flee from his loud recitation, and the angels in the air and the inhabitants of the house listen to his recitation and pray with his prayer. When this night has passed and the newly appointed angels arrive, they say: ‘Wake him at his usual time, and be gentle with him.’ When death comes to him, the Qur’an comes and stands at his head while they are washing him. When they finish with him, it enters until it is between his chest and his shroud. When he is placed in his grave and Munkar and Nakir come to him, the Qur’an comes out until it is between him and them. They say to it: ‘Get away from us, for we want to question him.’ It says: ‘By Allah, I will not leave him.’ Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman said: In the book of Mu‘awiyah b. Hammad, up to this point: “until I enter him into Paradise. If you two have been commanded regarding him with something, then your affair is up to you.” Then it looks at him and says: ‘Do you know me?’ He says: ‘No, by Allah.’ It says: ‘I am the Qur’an that kept you awake at night, made you thirsty during the day, and withheld you from your desires, your hearing, and your sight. You will find me among friends as a true friend and among brothers as a true brother. So rejoice, for after the questioning of Munkar and Nakir, there is no worry or grief upon you.’ Then they leave him, and the Qur’an ascends to its Lord and asks for a bed and a cover for him. He said: ‘Then a bed, a cover, and a lamp from Paradise are ordered for him, and jasmine from the jasmine of Paradise. Then a thousand angels from among the close angels of the lowest heaven carry him.’ He said: ‘The Qur’an gets to him before them and says: “Did you feel lonely after me? I did not cease with my Lord from whom I came until I ordered for you a bed, a cover, and light from the light of Paradise.” Then the angels enter upon him, carry him, spread that bed beneath him, place the cover under his heart, and the jasmine at his chest. Then they carry him until they lay him on his right side. Then they ascend from him, and he lies back on it, and he keeps looking at the angels until they reach the heaven. Then the Qur’an is raised at the side of the grave, and it is expanded for him as much as it is willed to be expanded.’ Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman said: In the book of Mu‘awiyah b. Hammad, according to me: ‘it is expanded for him a distance of four hundred years of travel. Then the jasmine is lifted from his chest and placed at his nose, and he smells it fresh until the day the Trumpet is blown. Then it comes to his family once or twice every two days, brings him news of them, and supplicates for good and favorable treatment for them. If one of his descendants learns the Qur’an, it gives him glad tidings of that. If his progeny is an evil progeny, it comes to the house morning and evening and weeps over him until the day the Trumpet is blown,’ or as he said.”

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon to us, and he mentioned the hadith, and in it: "Whoever learns the Qur'an then deliberately forgets it will meet Allah afflicted with leprosy and in chains, and Allah Almighty will set upon him for every verse a serpent that will bite him in the Fire. And whoever learns the Qur'an but does not act upon it, preferring the debris of this world and its adornment over it, has made himself deserving of Allah's wrath and will be in the rank of the Jews and Christians who cast the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) behind their backs and sold it for a small price. And whoever recites the Qur'an for show and reputation, or desiring thereby the world, will meet Allah (Almighty) with his face a bone with no flesh upon it, and the Qur'an will shove him from behind until it hurls him into the Fire, and he will fall into it with those who fall. And whoever recites it but does not act upon it, Allah Almighty will raise him on the Day of Resurrection blind, and he will say: 'My Lord, why have You raised me blind when I used to see?' Your Lord will say: 'Thus Our signs came to you, but you forgot them; and thus today you will be forgotten.' Then he will be commanded to the Fire. And whoever learns the Qur'an seeking the face of Allah Almighty and understanding in the religion of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) will have a reward like all that Allah Almighty has given the angels, the prophets, and the messengers. And whoever learns the Qur'an for show and reputation, to argue with the foolish, boast over the scholars, and seek thereby the world, Allah Almighty will scatter his bones on the Day of Resurrection, and he will be among the people most severely punished, and no type of punishment will remain but he will be punished with it, due to the severity of Allah's punishment and His wrath upon him."

✧ «Act according to the Qurʾān: deem lawful what it declares lawful, deem unlawful what it declares unlawful, follow its example, and do not disbelieve in any part of it. Whatever is unclear to you, refer it to Allah (Mighty and Glorious) and to the people of knowledge after me, so that they may inform you. And believe in the Torah and the Gospel, and do not reject what the prophets received from their Lord. Let the Qurʾān and the clarity within it suffice you, for it is an intercessor whose intercession will be accepted, and a witness whose testimony will be believed. Indeed, for every verse of it there is a light on the Day of Resurrection. I was given Sūrat al-Baqarah from the early Reminder, and I was given Ṭā Hā and the Ṭawāsīn from the tablets of Moses, and I was given the Opening of the Book and the closing verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah from a treasure beneath the Throne, and I was given the Mufaṣṣal as an additional gift.»

It will say: “Do you know me?” He will say to it: “I do not know you.” It will say: “I am your companion, the Qurʾān, who made you thirsty in the midday heat and kept you awake at night. Every trader is after his trade, and today you are after every trade.” He said: Then he will be given sovereignty in his right hand and eternal life in his left, and a crown of dignity will be placed on his head, and his parents will be clothed in two garments that the people of this world could not appraise. They will say: “For what have we earned this?” It will be said: “Because your child took up the Qurʾān.” Then it will be said: “Recite and ascend in the degrees of Paradise and its chambers.” He will continue ascending as long as he recites, whether quickly or in a slow, measured tone.»

✧ The earlier scripture used to descend from one gate upon one letter, but the Qurʾān was revealed from seven gates upon seven letters: a prohibitive, a commanding, lawful and unlawful, clear and ambiguous, and parables. So believe in its lawful, deem unlawful its unlawful, do what you are commanded, refrain from what you are forbidden, take lessons from its parables, act upon its clear verses, and believe in its ambiguous ones. Say: “We believe in it; all of it is from our Lord.”
