✧ The Virtue of the Reciters

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ، ثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْفِهْرِيِّ قَالَ:

إِنَّ رَجُلًا أَصَابَ مِنْ مَغْنَمٍ خَمْسَةً وَعِشْرِينَ أُوقِيَّةً مِنْ ذَهَبٍ، فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ لِيَدْعُوَ لَهُ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ، ثُمَّ عَادَ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ، ثُمَّ عَادَ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ، وَقَالَ: « مَا غَنِمَ فُلَانٌ أَفْضَلَ مِمَّا غَنِمْتَ، تَعَلَّمْ خَمْسَ آيَاتٍ

Translation

✧ A man obtained twenty-five uqiyyahs of gold from spoils of war, so he came to the Prophet ﷺ to ask him to supplicate for him, but he turned away from him. Then he returned, and he turned away from him. Then he returned again, and he turned away from him and said: “What so-and-so gained is better than what you gained: he learned five verses.”
