✧ Indeed Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, created Adam from dust, then made him clay, then left him until he became dark, smooth mud; He created him and formed him. Then He left him until he was like potter's clay. Iblis would pass by him and say: 'You have been created for a great matter!' Then Allah, Exalted is He, breathed into him from His spirit. The first thing in which the spirit flowed was his sight and his nostrils. He sneezed, and Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, prompted him to praise his Lord. The Lord, Mighty and Majestic is He, said: 'May Allah have mercy on you, your Lord.' Then Allah, Exalted is He, said: 'O Adam, go to those people and greet them, and see what they say.' He came and greeted them, and they said: 'And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah.' He came to his Lord, Mighty and Majestic is He, and He said, Majestic and Exalted is He: 'What did they say to you?'—though He knows best what they said. He said: 'O Lord, I greeted them and they said: And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah.' He, Blessed and Exalted is He, said: 'O Adam, this is your greeting and the greeting of your descendants.' He said: 'O Lord, and what are my descendants?' He, Majestic and Exalted is He, said: 'Choose one of My hands, O Adam.' He ﷺ said: 'I choose the right hand of my Lord, and both hands of my Lord are right.' So Allah, Exalted is He, spread His palm, and behold, all that would be among his descendants was in the palm of the Most Merciful, Blessed and Exalted is He.

✧ Ayyub, the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, remained in his affliction for eighteen years. Kinsman and stranger shunned him, except for two men from his brothers. Al-Bazzar added: They were among his closest brothers; they would come to him in the morning and evening. One of them said to his companion: 'Do you know, by Allah, Ayyub has committed a sin that no one has ever committed?' His companion said: 'What is that?' He said: 'For eighteen years Allah, Exalted is He, has not had mercy on him.' He disclosed what was in himself. When they went to him, the man could not restrain himself until he mentioned that to him. Ayyub ﷺ said: 'I do not know what you are saying, except that Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, knows that I would pass by two men disputing and they would mention Allah, Exalted is He, and I would return to my house and make expiation for them, out of dislike that Allah, Exalted is He, be mentioned except in truth.' He said: He ﷺ would go out for his need, and when he finished, his wife would take hold of his hand until he returned. One day he was late in coming to her, and it was revealed to Ayyub ﷺ in his place: 'Strike with your foot; this is a cool bathing place and a drink.' She found him slow, so she turned to look, and he came toward her, and Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, had removed his affliction, and he was in the best of conditions. When she saw him, she said: 'May Allah bless you! Have you seen the Prophet of Allah, this afflicted one? By Allah, I have not seen anyone more like him than you since he was healthy.' He ﷺ said: 'Indeed I am he.' He had two threshing floors: a threshing floor for wheat and a threshing floor for barley. Allah, Exalted is He, sent two clouds. When one of them was over the wheat threshing floor, it poured gold into it until it overflowed, and the other poured silver over the barley threshing floor until it overflowed.

✧ A bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and he honored him. He said to him: 'Come to us.' So he came to him and he said: 'Ask for your need?' He said: 'A she-camel to ride, and some goats for my family to milk.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Are you unable to be like the old woman of the Children of Israel?' They asked him, and he ﷺ said: 'When Musa ﷺ traveled with the Children of Israel from Egypt, they lost their way. He said: What is this? Their scholars said: When Yusuf ﷺ was near death, he took a covenant from us by Allah, Exalted is He, that we would not leave Egypt until we carry his bones with us. He said: Who knows the place of his grave? They said: An old woman of the Children of Israel. So he sent for her, and she came to him. He said: Show me the grave of Yusuf. She said: Not until you grant me my request. He said: What is your request? She said: That I be with you in Paradise. He disliked granting her that, so Allah, Exalted is He, revealed to him: Grant her her request. So she went with them to a lake—a place where water collects—and said: Drain this water. So they drained it. She said: Dig. So they dug and brought out the bones of Yusuf ﷺ. When they lifted them to the ground, behold, there was a path like daylight.'

✧ Regarding His saying, Mighty and Majestic: 'Do not be like those who abused Musa, and Allah cleared him of what they said' — he said: Musa and Harun went up the mountain, and Harun died. The Children of Israel said: 'You killed him! He was more loving to us than you, and gentler to us than you.' So they abused him with that. Then Allah, Exalted is He, commanded the angels, and they carried him until they passed by the Children of Israel. The angels (peace be upon them) spoke of his death until the Children of Israel knew that he had died. Then they took him and buried him. No one of Allah's creation, Exalted is He, saw his grave except the vulture; so Allah, Mighty and Majestic, made it deaf and mute.

✧ "O Abu Dharr," and I said: "At your service and gladly." He said: "Have you prayed today?" I said: "No." He ﷺ said: "Rise and pray," so I rose and prayed as long as Allah, the Exalted, willed, then I returned and sat. He ﷺ remained silent for a long time without speaking to me, so I said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has disliked my company." Then he ﷺ turned to me and said: "O Abu Dharr." I said: "At your service and gladly." He ﷺ said: "Seek refuge in Allah from the evil of the devils of mankind and jinn." I said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you; do humans have devils?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Does not Allah, Mighty and Majestic, say: 'Devils of mankind and jinn, inspiring one another'—the verse?" Then he ﷺ turned to me and said: "O Abu Dharr." I said: "At your service, O Messenger of Allah." He ﷺ said: "Shall I not teach you a phrase that is a treasure from the treasures of Paradise?" I said: "Yes, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you." He ﷺ said: "Say: 'There is no might nor power except with Allah.'" Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ persisted in not speaking until that lasted long from him. So I initiated the speech and said: "O Messenger of Allah, you commanded me to pray; what is prayer?" He ﷺ said: "It is a good that is placed; whoever wishes takes little, and whoever wishes takes much." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is fasting?" He ﷺ said: "An obligatory duty that suffices." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is charity?" He ﷺ said: "Multiplied manifold, and with Allah is more." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, which deed is best?" He ﷺ said: "Faith in Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and Jihad in the path of Allah, the Exalted." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, which martyrs are best?" He ﷺ said: "One whose blood is spilled and whose horse is hamstrung." He said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, which slaves are best?" He ﷺ said: "The most expensive in price and the most precious to their owners." He said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, which charity is best?" He ﷺ said: "An effort from one of little means, and a secret to a poor person." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, what if I do not find anything to give in charity?" He ﷺ said: "You help a weak person or you make something for an unskilled person." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, what if I cannot?" He ﷺ said: "Then you restrain this—and he ﷺ pointed to his tongue—for it is a good charity a person gives on behalf of himself." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, which verse revealed to you of the Quran is greatest?" He ﷺ said: "The Verse of the Throne. And do you know what the likeness of the heavens and the earth is in relation to the Throne?" I said: "No, unless you teach me from what Allah, the Exalted, has taught you." He ﷺ said: "The likeness of the heavens and the earth in the Throne is but like a ring cast in a desert, and the excellence of the Throne over the heavens and the earth is like the excellence of the desert over that ring." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, how many were the prophets (peace be upon them)?" He ﷺ said: "They were one hundred twenty-four thousand." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, were all of them messengers?" He ﷺ said: "No, the messengers among them were three hundred fifteen men." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, which of them was first?" He ﷺ said: "Adam ﷺ." I said: "Was Adam a prophet?" He ﷺ said: "Yes; Allah formed his clay, created him with His hand, breathed into him of His spirit, and spoke to him directly." Then the people became many around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Shall I not inform you of the most miserly of people?" I said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He ﷺ said: "One in whose presence I am mentioned and he does not send blessings upon me ﷺ."
