✧ “When one of you rises at night (to pray), let him recite aloud, for the Shaytan and the wicked jinn flee from his loud recitation, and the angels in the air and the inhabitants of the house listen to his recitation and pray with his prayer. When this night has passed and the newly appointed angels arrive, they say: ‘Wake him at his usual time, and be gentle with him.’ When death comes to him, the Qur’an comes and stands at his head while they are washing him. When they finish with him, it enters until it is between his chest and his shroud. When he is placed in his grave and Munkar and Nakir come to him, the Qur’an comes out until it is between him and them. They say to it: ‘Get away from us, for we want to question him.’ It says: ‘By Allah, I will not leave him.’ Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman said: In the book of Mu‘awiyah b. Hammad, up to this point: “until I enter him into Paradise. If you two have been commanded regarding him with something, then your affair is up to you.” Then it looks at him and says: ‘Do you know me?’ He says: ‘No, by Allah.’ It says: ‘I am the Qur’an that kept you awake at night, made you thirsty during the day, and withheld you from your desires, your hearing, and your sight. You will find me among friends as a true friend and among brothers as a true brother. So rejoice, for after the questioning of Munkar and Nakir, there is no worry or grief upon you.’ Then they leave him, and the Qur’an ascends to its Lord and asks for a bed and a cover for him. He said: ‘Then a bed, a cover, and a lamp from Paradise are ordered for him, and jasmine from the jasmine of Paradise. Then a thousand angels from among the close angels of the lowest heaven carry him.’ He said: ‘The Qur’an gets to him before them and says: “Did you feel lonely after me? I did not cease with my Lord from whom I came until I ordered for you a bed, a cover, and light from the light of Paradise.” Then the angels enter upon him, carry him, spread that bed beneath him, place the cover under his heart, and the jasmine at his chest. Then they carry him until they lay him on his right side. Then they ascend from him, and he lies back on it, and he keeps looking at the angels until they reach the heaven. Then the Qur’an is raised at the side of the grave, and it is expanded for him as much as it is willed to be expanded.’ Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman said: In the book of Mu‘awiyah b. Hammad, according to me: ‘it is expanded for him a distance of four hundred years of travel. Then the jasmine is lifted from his chest and placed at his nose, and he smells it fresh until the day the Trumpet is blown. Then it comes to his family once or twice every two days, brings him news of them, and supplicates for good and favorable treatment for them. If one of his descendants learns the Qur’an, it gives him glad tidings of that. If his progeny is an evil progeny, it comes to the house morning and evening and weeps over him until the day the Trumpet is blown,’ or as he said.”
