    كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُسَوِّي الصَّفَّ، حَتَّى يَجْعَلَهُ مِثْلَ الْقِدْحِ أَوِ الرُّمْحِ، فَرَأَى رَجُلًا نَائِيًا، فَقَالَ: لَتُسَوُّنَّ صُفُوفَكُمْ أَوْ لَيُخَالِفَنَّ اللهُ بَيْنَ وُجُوهِكُمْ

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ used to straighten the row until he made it like an arrow or a spear. Then he saw a man standing away, so he said: “You will straighten your rows, or Allah will cause your faces to differ.”

    ✧ Zakariyyā b. Abī Zāʾidah reported to us, from Simāk, from al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr, from the Prophet ﷺ, similar to the ḥadīth of Shuʿbah. This wording is not known to be narrated from the Prophet ﷺ except through the narration of al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr from him.

    ✧ When we prayed behind the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: “Allah hears the one who praises Him,” none of us would bend his back until he saw the Prophet ﷺ had prostrated.

    " لَلَّهُ أَفْرَحُ بِتَوْبَةِ الْعَبْدِ مِنْ رَجُلٍ مَعَهُ رَاحِلَتُهُ بِفَلَاةٍ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ عَلَيْهَا زَادُهُ وَطَعَامُهُ، فَأَتَى أَصْلَ شَجَرَةٍ فَتَوَسَّدَ ذِرَاعَ نَاقَتِهِ، فَقَامَ فَانْتَبَهَ وَقَدْ ذَهَبَتْ نَاقَتُهُ، فَأَتَى شَرَفًا فَصَعِدَ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرَهَا، ثُمَّ أَتَى شَرَفًا آخَرَ حَتَّى فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ مِرَارًا، فَقَالَ: ارْجِعْ إِلَى الْمَكَانِ الَّذِي كُنْتُ فِيهِ حَتَّى أَمُوتَ، فَرَجَعَ فَإِذَا هُوَ بِرَاحِلَتِهِ تَجُرُّ خِطَامَهَا عَلَيْهَا زَادُهُ، فَلَلَّهُ أَشَدُّ فَرَحًا بِتَوْبَةِ الْعَبْدِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلِ بِرَاحِلَتِهِ

    ✧ “Allah is more pleased with the repentance of a servant than a man who has his riding camel with him in a desolate land, carrying his provisions and food. He came to the base of a tree and lay down with his forearm as a pillow, using the camel’s foreleg as support. Then he stood up and woke up, and his camel had gone. He went to a high place, climbed it, and did not see it. Then he went to another high place, until he did that several times. Then he said: ‘I will return to the place where I was until I die.’ So he returned, and behold, there was his camel, dragging its halter, with his provisions still on it. Allah is more intensely pleased with the repentance of a servant than that man with his camel.”

    ✧ "The example of the one who fights in the cause of Allah is like the one who fasts and stands in prayer until he returns to his home."

    أَخْبَرَنَا سِمَاكٌ، عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ، وَلَمْ يُسْنِدْهُ وَلَا نَعْلَمُ أَسْنَدَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَنْ سِمَاكٍ عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِلَّا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ زَائِدَةَ وَغَيْرُهُ يَرْوِيهِ مَوْقُوفًا

    ✧ Simak reported to us from al-Nu'man b. Bashir, and he did not trace it back. We do not know of anyone who traced this hadith back from Simak, from al-Nu'man, from the Prophet ﷺ, except Husayn b. 'Ali, from Za'idah. Others narrated it as mawquf (stopped at a Companion).

    ✧ Muhammad b. 'Abd al-Malik and Hilal b. Yahya reported it to us, saying: Abu 'Awanah reported to us from Ibrahim b. Muhammad b. al-Muntashir, from his father, from Habib b. Salim, from al-Nu'man b. Bashir, from the Prophet ﷺ.

    ✧ He used to recite in the Eid prayer: 'Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High' (Surat al-A'la) and 'Has there come to you the account of the Overwhelming?' (Surat al-Ghashiyah).

    أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ، عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ - ﷺ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ قَدْ رَوَاهُ شُعْبَةُ وَغَيْرُهُ فَتَابَعَ أَبَا عَوَانَةَ وَابْنَ عُيَيْنَةَ فَاقْتَصَرْنَا عَلَى حَدِيثِ أَبِي عَوَانَةَ وَابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ

    ✧ Abu 'Awanah reported to us from Abu Bishr, from Habib b. Salim, from al-Nu'man b. Bashir, from the Prophet ﷺ. This hadith was also narrated by Shu'bah and others, who concurred with Abu 'Awanah and Ibn 'Uyaynah. We have limited ourselves to the hadith of Abu 'Awanah and Ibn 'Uyaynah.

    ✧ I am the most knowledgeable among you about the time of this prayer, meaning the 'Isha' prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray it when the moon set on the third night.

    ✧ "The least punished of the people of Hell is a man with two sandals of fire on the soles of his feet, from which his brain boils."

    " إِنَّ الَّذِي تَذْكُرُونَ مِنْ جَلَالِ اللهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى مِنْ تَسْبِيحَةٍ وَتَكْبِيرَةٍ وَتَهْلِيلَةٍ، يَنْعَطِفْنَ حَوْلَ الْعَرْشِ لَهُنَّ دَوِيٌّ كَدَوِيِّ النَّحْلِ، يَذْكُرْنَ بِصَاحِبِهِنَّ، أَفَلَا يُحِبُّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَلَّا يَزَالَ مِنْهُ عِنْدَ اللهِ مَنْ يَذْكُرُهُ بِهِ

    ✧ "Indeed, what you mention of the majesty of Allah, Blessed and Exalted, of glorification (tasbih), magnification (takbir), and declaration of His oneness (tahlil), they circle around the Throne with a buzzing like the buzzing of bees, mentioning the one who said them. Would not one of you love that there should always be someone with Allah who mentions him by it?"

    " كُنْتُ عِنْدَ مِنْبَرِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ جُمُعَةٍ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: مَا أُبَالِي أَلَّا أَعْمَلَ عَمَلًا بَعْدَ الْإِسْلَامِ إِلَّا أَنْ أَسْقِيَ الْحَاجَّ، فَقَالَ الْآخَرُ: مَا أُبَالِي أَلَّا أَعْمَلَ عَمَلًا بَعْدَ الْإِسْلَامِ إِلَّا أَنْ أَعْمُرَ الْمَسْجِدَ الْحَرَامَ، وَقَالَ الْآخَرُ: الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ أَفْضَلُ مِمَّا قُلْتُمْ، فَزَجَرَهُمْ عُمَرُ وَقَالَ: " لَا تَرْفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَكُمْ عِنْدَ مِنْبَرِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَوْمُ جُمُعَةٍ، وَلَكِنِّي إِذَا صَلَّيْتُ الْجُمُعَةَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَاسْتَفْتَيْتُهُ فِيمَا اخْتَلَفْتُمْ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ فَسَأَلَهُ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى أَجَعَلْتُمْ سِقَايَةَ الْحَاجِّ وَعِمَارَةَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ كَمَنْ آمَنَ بِاللهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ وَجَاهَدَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ لا يَسْتَوُونَ عِنْدَ اللهِ وَاللهُ لا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ

    ✧ "I was by the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a Friday, when a man said: 'I do not care if I do no deed after Islam except providing water for the pilgrims.' Another said: 'I do not care if I do no deed after Islam except maintaining the Sacred Mosque.' Another said: 'Jihad in the path of Allah is better than what you have mentioned.' 'Umar rebuked them and said: 'Do not raise your voices by the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a Friday. But when I have prayed the Friday prayer, I will enter upon him and ask his ruling about what you have differed over.' So he entered upon him and asked him, and Allah, Blessed and Exalted, revealed: 'Have you made the providing of water to pilgrims and the maintenance of the Sacred Mosque equal to one who believes in Allah and the Last Day and strives in the path of Allah? They are not equal before Allah, and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.'"

    أَنَّ رَجُلًا يُقَالُ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ وَقَعَ عَلَى جَارِيَةِ امْرَأَتِهِ فَرُفِعَ إِلَى النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ فَقَالَ: لَأَقْضِيَنَّ فِيكَ بِقَضِيَّةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، إِنْ كَانَتْ أَحَلَّتْهَا لَكَ جَلَدْتُكَ مِائَةً، وَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ أَحَلَّتْهَا لَكَ رَجَمْتُكَ بِالْحِجَارَةِ، قَالَ: وَكَانَتْ أَحَلَّتْهَا لَهُ، قَالَ: فَجُلِدَ مِائَةً،

    ✧ A man called 'Abd al-Rahman had intercourse with his wife's slave girl, and the case was brought to al-Nu'man b. Bashir. He said: 'I will judge you with the judgment of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. If she had made her lawful to you, I will flog you one hundred lashes; but if she had not made her lawful to you, I will stone you.' He said: She had made her lawful to him. So he was flogged one hundred lashes.

    ✧ What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite on Friday? He said: "Surah al-Jumu'ah and 'Has there come to you the report of the Overwhelming?'"

    ✧ Supplication is worship. And your Lord, Blessed and Exalted, said: 'Call upon Me; I will respond to you. Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell in humiliation.'

    أَخْبَرَنَا شَيْبَانُ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، وَخَيْثَمَةَ، عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِنَحْوِهِ. وَلَا نَعْلَمُ أَحَدًا جَمَعَ خَيْثَمَةَ وَالشَّعْبِيَّ إِلَّا شَيْبَانُ. وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ رَوَاهُ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ جَمَاعَةٌ وَكُلُّ مَنْ رَوَاهُ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ رَوَاهُ عَنْ خَيْثَمَةَ عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ إِلَّا شَيْبَانَ

    ✧ Shayban informed us, from 'Asim, from al-Sha'bi, and Khaythama, from al-Nu'man b. Bashir, from the Prophet ﷺ, similarly. We do not know anyone who combined Khaythama and al-Sha'bi except Shayban. This hadith was narrated from 'Asim by a group, and all those who narrated it from 'Asim narrated it from Khaythama from al-Nu'man, except Shayban.

    " إِنَّ مَثَلَ الْمُدْهِنِ فِي أَمْرِ اللهِ كَمَثَلِ رَهْطٍ رَكِبُوا سَفِينَةً فَاقْتَرَعُوا فِيهَا الْمَنَازِلَ، فَأَصَابَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَسْفَلَهَا، وَأَصَابَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَعْلَاهَا، فَأَرَادَ رَجُلٌ مِمَّنْ هُوَ فِي أَسْفَلِهَا أَنْ يَخْرِقَهَا، فَقَالَ بَعْضُ مَنْ فِي أَعْلَاهَا: مَا تَصْنَعُ ؟ قَالَ: أَخْرِقُهَا فَأَسْتَقِي مِنْهَا فَيَكُونُ أَهْوَنُ عَلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَصْعَدَ إِلَيْكُمْ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " فَإِنْ تَرَكُوهُ غَرِقَ وَغَرَّقَهُمْ، وَإِنْ مَنَعُوهُ نَجَا بِإِذْنِ اللهِ وَنَجَوْا

    ✧ "Verily, the likeness of the one who turns a blind eye in matters of God is like a group of people who boarded a ship and cast lots for their places, and some got the lower part and some got the upper part. A man among those in the lower part wanted to make a hole in it, so some of those in the upper part said, 'What are you doing?' He said, 'I will make a hole in it and draw water from it, and that will be easier for me than going up to you.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'If they leave him, he will drown and drown them, and if they stop him, he will be saved by God's permission and they will be saved.'"

    ✧ My father narrated to me, from his father, from Salama b. Kuhayl, from al-Sha'bi, from al-Nu'man b. Bashir, from the Prophet ﷺ, similar to the hadith of Nu'aym b. Abi Hind from al-Sha'bi. We do not know that Nu'aym b. Abi Hind transmitted from al-Sha'bi from al-Nu'man, nor from anyone other than al-Nu'man, any hadith other than this one.

    ✧ The likeness of the one who acts in disobedience to God, and the one who turns a blind eye and persists in it, is like a people who cast lots on a ship, and one of them got its worst, roughest, and lowest part. He wanted to dig a hole in it. If they leave him, he will perish and they will perish, and if they take hold of his hands, they will be saved and he will be saved.

I will strike for you an example regarding that: Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has protected a sanctuary, and Allah's sanctuary is what He has forbidden. Indeed, whoever grazes around the sanctuary is on the verge of entering it, and whoever mingles with it is on the verge of daring to do so."

    ✧ The example of the believer and death is like a man who has three friends. One of them is his wealth: he says, 'Take what you wish and leave what you wish.' The second says, 'I am with you; I will carry you, and when you die I will leave you.' The third says, 'I am with you; I will enter with you and exit with you.' One of them is his wealth, the second is his family and children, and the third is his deeds.

He said: Then Abu Bakr asked permission and entered, and he leaned toward her and said: 'O daughter of so-and-so, should I not hear you raising your voice over the Messenger of Allah?'

    ✧ My mother asked my father to give me a gift, so he gave it to me. She said: I will not be satisfied until you have the Prophet ﷺ witness it. So my father took me by the hand while I was a boy and brought me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: The mother of this boy, the daughter of Rawaha, asked me to give him a gift, and I have given it to him, so I call upon you to witness that. He ﷺ said: "Do you have a son other than this one?" He said: Yes. He ﷺ said: "Have you given him the like of what you gave this one?" He said: No. He ﷺ said: "Then do not call me as a witness, for I do not bear witness to injustice."

I saw a man among us press his shoulder to his companion's shoulder, his knee to his knee, and his ankle to his ankle.

    إِنَّ ثَلَاثَةَ نَفَرٍ انْطَلَقُوا فِي سَفَرٍ، فَآوَاهُمُ اللَّيْلُ إِلَى غَارٍ، فَوَقَعَتْ صَخْرَةٌ عَلَى بَابِ ذَلِكَ الْغَارِ، فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ: لَسْتُمْ عَلَى الطَّرِيقِ، وَقَدْ بُلِيتُمْ بِأَمْرٍ عَظِيمٍ لَا يُمْكِنُكُمْ فِيهِ إِلَّا أَنْ تَدْعُوا الَّذِي أَبْلَاكُمْ بِهِ أَوْ كَلِمَةً نَحْوَهَا، فَلْيَنْظُرْ كُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنْكُمْ أَفْضَلَ عَمَلٍ عَمِلَهُ فَلْيَذْكُرْهُ ثُمَّ لِيَدْعُو اللهَ، فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ كَانَتْ لِي بِنْتُ عَمٍّ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ أَحَدٌ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْهَا، فَأَرَدْتُهَا عَلَى نَفْسِهَا وَجَعَلْتُ لَهَا مِائَةَ دِينَارٍ، فَلَمَّا جَلَسْتُ مِنْهَا مَجْلِسَ الرَّجُلِ مِنِ امْرَأَتِهِ، اسْتَقْبَلَتْهَا رِعْدَةٌ، وَقَالَتْ: إِنِّي وَاللهِ مَا عَمِلْتُ خَطِيئَةً قَطُّ وَمَا حَمَلَنِي عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا الْجَهْدُ، فَقُمْتُ وَقُلْتُ: هِيَ لَكِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنِّي إِنَّمَا قُمْتُ عَنْهَا الْتِمَاسَ مَرْضَاتِكَ وَمَخَافَةَ سَخَطِكَ، فَافْرُجْ عَنَّا هَذَا الْحَجَرَ، فَانْحَطَّ الْحَجَرُ حَتَّى رَأَوُا الضَّوْءَ، وَقَالَ الْآخَرُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ كَانَ لِي أَبَوَانِ، وَكَانَتْ لِي غَنَمٌ أَرْعَى قَرِيبًا، وَإِنِّي تَبَاعَدْتُ فَجِئْتُ ذَلِكَ لَيْلَةً وَقَدِ احْتَبَسْتُ، فَحَلَبْتُ إِنَاءً مِنْ لَبَنٍ، وَأَتَيْتُ أَبَوَيَّ فَوَجَدْتُهُمَا نَائِمَيْنِ، فَكَرِهْتُ أَنْ أُوقِظَهُمَا مِنْ نَوْمِهِمَا، فَبَاتَ الْإِنَاءُ عَلَى يَدَيَّ حَتَّى اسْتَيْقَظَا مَتَى اسْتَيْقَظَا، اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنِّي إِنَّمَا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ الْتِمَاسَ مَرْضَاتِكَ وَمَخَافَةَ سَخَطِكَ، فَافْرُجْ عَنَّا هَذَا الْحَجَرَ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: فَانْقَضَّ الْحَجَرُ حَتَّى رَأَوُا الضَّوْءَ وَرَجَوْا، قَالَ الثَّالِثُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنِّيَ اسْتَأْجَرْتُ رِجَالًا بِأَجْرٍ مَعْلُومٍ، وَكَانَ فِيهِمْ رَجُلٌ يَعْمَلُ عَمَلَ رَجُلَيْنِ، فَلَمَّا أَعْطَيْتُهُمْ أُجُورَهُمْ قَالَ: أَعْطِنِي عَمَلَ رَجُلَيْنِ، فَقُلْتُ: إِنَّمَا لَكَ عَمَلُ رَجُلٍ، فَأَبَى وَتَرَكَهُ عِنْدِي وَذَهَبَ، فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَعْمَلُ لَهُ فِيهِ حَتَّى اجْتَمَعَ سِتُّونَ مِنْ بَيْنِ ثَوْرٍ وَبَقَرَةٍ وَعَبْدٍ وَأَمَةٍ، فَجَاءَ بَعْدَ حِينٍ فَقَالَ: يَا عَبْدَ اللهِ، أَمَا آنَ لَكَ أَنْ تُعْطِيَنِي أَجْرِيَ ؟ قُلْتُ: مَنْ أَنْتَ ؟ قَالَ: أَنَا الَّذِي عَمِلْتُ مَعَكَ عَمَلَ رَجُلَيْنِ فَلَمْ تُعْطِنِي إِلَّا عَمَلَ رَجُلٍ وَاحِدٍ فَتَرَكْتُهُ، فَقُلْتُ: هَذِهِ سِتُّونَ مِنْ بَيْنِ ثَوْرٍ وَبَقَرَةٍ وَعَبْدٍ وَأَمَةٍ، قَالَ: حَبَسْتَنِي مَا حَبَسْتَنِي وَتَسْخَرُ بِي، قُلْتُ: هُوَ لَكَ فَخُذْهُ فَأَخَذَهُ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنِّي إِنَّمَا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ الْتِمَاسَ مَرْضَاتِكَ وَمَخَافَةَ سَخَطِكَ، فَافْرُجْ عَنَّا هَذَا الْحَجَرَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: فَزَالَ الْحَجَرُ وَانْطَلَقُوا يَمْشُونَ.

    ✧ Three men set out on a journey, and night overtook them and forced them into a cave. A rock fell and blocked the entrance of the cave. They said to one another: You are not on the road, and you have been afflicted with a great matter that can only be relieved by supplicating to the One who afflicted you with it—or words to that effect. Let each man among you recall the best deed he has done, mention it, and then supplicate to Allah. One of them said: O Allah, You know that I had a cousin, and there was no one on earth more beloved to me than her. I desired her for myself and offered her one hundred dinars. When I sat from her as a man sits from his wife, a trembling seized her, and she said: By Allah, I have never committed a sin, and nothing compelled me to this except dire need. So I got up and said: It is yours (the money). O Allah, if You know that I only left her seeking Your pleasure and fearing Your wrath, then remove this rock from us. The rock shifted until they saw the light. The second man said: O Allah, if You know that I had parents and sheep that I pastured nearby, and I stayed away and came to them one night after being delayed, I milked a vessel of milk and brought it to my parents, but found them asleep. I disliked waking them from their sleep, so the vessel remained in my hands until they awoke—whenever they awoke. O Allah, if You know that I only did that seeking Your pleasure and fearing Your wrath, then remove this rock from us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The rock cracked until they saw the light and had hope. The third man said: O Allah, if You know that I hired men for a known wage, and among them was a man who did the work of two men. When I gave them their wages, he said: Give me the wages of two men. I said: You are only entitled to the work of one man. He refused and left his wages with me and went away. I kept working with it on his behalf until sixty head gathered, including bulls, cows, and male and female slaves. He came after a time and said: O servant of Allah, is it not time for you to give me my wages? I said: Who are you? He said: I am the one who did the work of two men with you, and you only gave me the work of one man, so I left it. I said: These are sixty head, including bulls, cows, and male and female slaves. He said: You have withheld from me as long as you have, and now you mock me. I said: It is yours, take it. He took it. O Allah, if You know that I only did that seeking Your pleasure and fearing Your wrath, then remove this rock from us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The rock moved aside, and they departed walking.

    إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ الْأَوَّلُ: إِنَّهُ كَانَتْ لِي بِنْتُ عَمٍّ مِنْ أَجْمَلِ النِّسَاءِ، وَكَانَتْ أَحَبَّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ، فَخَطَبْتُهَا إِلَى أَبِيهَا، فَأَبَى أَنْ يُزَوِّجَنِيهَا فَخَرَجْتُ عَلَى وَجْهِي، وَمَاتَ أَبُوهَا فَرَجَعْتُ وَاحْتَاجَتْ، فَأَرْسَلَتْ إِلَيَّ تَشْكُو الْحَاجَةَ، فَقُلْتُ: لَا إِلَّا أَنْ تُعْطِينِي نَفْسَكِ، فَفَعَلَتْ ذَلِكَ مِرَارًا، فَاشْتَدَّتْ حَاجَتُهَا فَأَرْسَلَتْ إِلَيَّ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ أَوِ الرَّابِعَةِ، فَأَطْمَعَتْنِي فِي نَفْسِهَا فَأَتَيْتُهَا، فَلَمَّا قَعَدْتُ مِنْهَا مَقْعَدَ الرَّجُلِ مِنِ امْرَأَتِهِ، أَخَذَتْهَا رِعْدَةٌ، فَقَالَتْ: أَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ أَنْ تَفُضَّ هَذَا الْخَاتَمَ بِغَيْرِ حَقِّهِ فَإِنِّي وَاللهِ مَا عَمِلْتُ هَذَا الْعَمَلَ قَطُّ، فَقُمْتُ عَنْهَا وَرَدَدْتُ عَلَيْهَا نَفْسَهَا، وَأَعْطَيْتُهَا صَدَاقَهَا، اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنِّي فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ الْتِمَاسَ مَرْضَاتِكَ وَمَخَافَةَ سَخَطِكَ، فَافْرُجْ عَنَّا

    ✧ Except that the first man said: I had a cousin who was among the most beautiful of women, and she was the most beloved of people to me. I proposed to her father, but he refused to marry her to me. I left, and her father died, so I returned and she became needy. She sent to me complaining of need. I said: No, unless you give yourself to me. She did that several times, and her need became severe. She sent to me the third or fourth time, and she made me desire her, so I went to her. When I sat from her as a man sits from his wife, a trembling seized her, and she said: I adjure you by Allah not to break this seal unlawfully, for by Allah I have never done this act. So I got up from her and returned her to herself, and I gave her her dowry. O Allah, if You know that I did that seeking Your pleasure and fearing Your wrath, then remove from us.

    أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعْدٍ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ، عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ - ﷺ وَلَا نَعْلَمُ رَوَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَنْ أَبِي سَعْدٍ إِلَّا أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ وَكَانَ ثِقَةً، وَلَا نَعْلَمُ أَسْنَدَ أَبُو سَعْدٍ عَنْ سِمَاكٍ غَيْرَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ، وَلَا سَمِعْنَاهُ إِلَّا مِنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حَرْبٍ وَرَوَاهُ وَهْبُ بْنُ مُنَبِّهٍ عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ

    ✧ Abu Sa'd reported to us, from Simak, from al-Nu'man b. Bashir, from the Prophet ﷺ. We do not know anyone who narrated this hadith from Abu Sa'd except Abu Mas'ud, and he was trustworthy. We do not know that Abu Sa'd narrated anything from Simak except this hadith, and we only heard it from 'Ali b. Harb. Wahb b. Munabbih also narrated it from al-Nu'man b. Bashir.

    ✧ Verily, Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, wrote a Book two thousand years before He created the earth, and He revealed in it two verses with which He sealed Surat al-Baqarah. They are not recited in a house for three nights but that a devil comes near it.

    ✧ Abu Raja' Muhammad b. Sayf informed us, from Abu Qilabah, from Abu Salih al-Ash'ari, from al-Nu'man b. Bashir, from the Prophet ﷺ, with something similar. We do not know that Abu al-Ash'ath al-San'ani reported with a chain from al-Nu'man b. Bashir except this hadith, and we do not know that Abu Raja' reported with a chain from Abu Qilabah other than this hadith, and no one narrated it from him except Yusuf b. Khalid.

    " مَثَلُ الْقَائِمِ عَلَى حُدُودِ اللهِ وَالْمُدْهِنِ فِيهَا، كَمَثَلِ قَوْمٍ اسْتَهَمُوا عَلَى سَفِينَةٍ فِي الْبَحْرِ، فَأَصَابَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَعْلَاهَا وَبَعْضُهُمْ أَسْفَلَهَا، وَكَانَ الَّذِينَ فِي أَسْفَلِهَا يَخْرُجُونَ فَيَسْتَقُونَ الْمَاءَ وَيَشُقُّونَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ فِي أَعْلَاهَا، فَقَالَ الَّذِينَ فِي أَعْلَاهَا: لَا نَدَعُكُمْ تَمُرُّونَ عَلَيْنَا فَتُؤْذُونَا، فَقَالَ الَّذِينَ فِي أَسْفَلِهَا: إِنْ مَنَعْتُمُونَا فَتَحْنَا بَابًا مِنْ أَسْفَلِهَا، فَإِنْ أَخَذُوا عَلَى أَيْدِيهِمْ فَمَنَعُوهُمْ، نَجَوْا جَمِيعًا، وَإِنْ تَرَكُوهُمْ هَلَكُوا جَمِيعًا

    ✧ The example of the one who upholds the limits of Allah and the one who compromises them is like the example of a group of people who drew lots for places on a ship at sea. Some of them got the upper deck and some got the lower deck. Those in the lower deck had to go up to get water, and they disturbed those on the upper deck. Those on the upper deck said: 'We will not let you pass by us and annoy us.' Those in the lower deck said: 'If you prevent us, we will open a hole in the bottom of the ship.' If they restrain their hands and prevent them, they will all be saved. But if they leave them, they will all perish.
