✧ The account of the expedition of Ghālib b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Laythī against Banū al-Mulawwaḥ [the affair of Ibn al-Barṣāʾ]. Its narrative is that Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah b. al-Mughīrah b. al-Akhnas related to me from Muslim b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khubayb al-Juhanī, from al-Mundhir, from Jundab b. Makīth al-Juhanī, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ sent Ghālib b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Kalbī, Kalb b. ʿAwf b. Layth, in a raiding party in which I was, and commanded him to launch a raid on Banū al-Mulawwaḥ, who were at al-Kadīd. We set out until, when we were at Qudayd, we met al-Ḥārith b. Mālik, who is Ibn al-Barṣāʾ al-Laythī, and we seized him. He said: "I have come wanting Islam; I came out only to the Messenger of God ﷺ." We said to him: "If you are a Muslim, then a night in bonds will not harm you; and if you are otherwise, we will have secured you." So we bound him, then left behind with him a black man from our companions, and we said to him: "If he struggles with you, cut off his head."

✧ [The trial of Ibn Makīth in this expedition] He said: Then we travelled until we came to al-Kadīd at sunset, and we were in a side of the valley. My companions sent me as a lookout for them, so I went out until I came to a hill overlooking the encampment. I leaned on it, then climbed to its top, and looked at the encampment. By God, while I was lying flat on the hill, a man of theirs came out of his tent and said to his wife: 'I see on the hill a blackness that I did not see at the beginning of my day. Look at your vessels, see if you are missing anything from them, lest the dogs have dragged some of them.' He said: So she looked and said: 'No, by God, I miss nothing.' He said: 'Then hand me my bow and two arrows.' She handed them to him. He said: He shot an arrow, and by God, it did not miss my side. I pulled it out, placed it aside, and stayed firmly in my place. He said: Then he shot the other, and placed it in my shoulder. I pulled it out, placed it aside, and stayed firmly in my place. He said to his wife: 'If it were a lookout for a people, he would have moved. My two arrows have certainly struck him, may you be without a father. When morning comes, seek them and take them, lest the dogs chew them on me.' He said: Then he went in. [The escape of the Muslims with the cattle] He said: We gave them time, until when they were at ease and asleep, and it was near dawn, we launched the raid upon them. He said: We killed, and drove off the cattle, and the cry of the people went out. A great host came to us which we could not withstand, so we went on with the cattle, and passed by Ibn al-Barṣāʾ and his companion, and we carried them off with us. He said: The people caught up with us until they drew near to us. He said: Between us and them there was nothing but the wadi of Qudayd. Then God sent the wadi with a flood from where He willed, Blessed and Exalted be He, without a cloud that we saw and without rain. It came with something that no one had strength against, and no one was able to cross it. So they halted, looking at us, while we were driving their cattle. Not one man of them was able to cross over to us, and we were urging them on swiftly, until we outdistanced them, and they were unable to pursue us. [The watchword of the Muslims in this expedition] He said: We brought them to the Messenger of God ﷺ. Ibn Isḥāq said: A man of Aslam narrated to me, from a man of them, that the watchword of the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ that night was: 'Amit, amit' (Kill, kill). A rajaz poet of the Muslims said while urging them on: Abū al-Qāsim refused that you be far away In a lush place whose plants are tangled, Yellow its tops, like the color of gold. Ibn Hishām said: It is also narrated: 'like the color of gold.' The account of the expedition is complete, and I return to the mention of the detailed listing of the expeditions and missions.

✧ The expedition of Zayd b. Ḥārithah to Judhām [Its cause] Ibn Isḥāq said: Its account, as related to me by one I do not suspect, from men of Judhām who were learned in it, is that when Rifāʿah b. Zayd al-Judhāmī came to his people from the Messenger of God ﷺ with his letter calling them to Islam, and they responded to him, it was not long before Diḥyah b. Khalīfah al-Kalbī arrived from the presence of Caesar, the ruler of Byzantium, when the Messenger of God ﷺ had sent him to him, bringing trade goods of his own. When they were in a valley of their valleys called Shanār, al-Hunayd b. ʿŪṣ and his son ʿŪṣ b. al-Hunayd al-Ḍulayʿī attacked Diḥyah b. Khalīfah. Al-Ḍulayʿ is a clan of Judhām. They seized everything he had with him. News of that reached a group from al-Ḍubayb, the kinsfolk of Rifāʿah b. Zayd, among those who had accepted Islam and responded, and they set out against al-Hunayd and his son, among them from Banū al-Ḍubayb al-Nuʿmān b. Abī Jiʿāl, until they met them and fought. On that day Qurrah b. Ashqar al-Ḍafāwī, then al-Ḍulayʿī, proclaimed his lineage and said: "I am the son of Lubnā," and he shot an arrow at al-Nuʿmān b. Abī Jiʿāl and struck his knee. When it hit him, he said: "Take it, for I am the son of Lubnā." He had a mother called Lubnā. Ḥassān b. Millah al-Ḍubaybī had previously accompanied Diḥyah b. Khalīfah and taught him the Opening of the Book. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said Qurrah b. Ashqar al-Ḍafārī and Ḥayyān b. Millah. [The Muslims gaining the upper hand over the disbelievers] Ibn Isḥāq said: One I do not suspect related to me, from men of Judhām, saying: They recovered what had been in the possession of al-Hunayd and his son and returned it to Diḥyah. Diḥyah then departed and came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, informed him of his news, and sought from him the blood of al-Hunayd and his son. The Messenger of God ﷺ sent Zayd b. Ḥārithah against them, and that is what stirred the expedition of Zayd to Judhām, and he sent an army with him. Ghaṭafān of Judhām, Wāʾil, and those of Salāmān and Saʿd b. Hudhaym had already set out, when Rifāʿah b. Zayd came to them with the letter of the Messenger of God ﷺ, until they encamped at the ḥarrah, the Ḥarrah of al-Rajlāʾ, while Rifāʿah b. Zayd was at Kurāʿ Ribah, unaware, and with him were people from Banū al-Ḍubayb; the rest of Banū al-Ḍubayb were in the Wādī Madān, on the side of the ḥarrah where the water flows eastward. The army of Zayd b. Ḥārithah advanced from the direction of al-Awlāj and raided at al-Māqiṣ, on the side of the ḥarrah, and gathered whatever they found of property and people, and they killed al-Hunayd and his son and two men from Banū al-Ajnaf. Ibn Hishām said: From Banū al-Aḥnaf.

✧ He said Ibn Isḥāq in his account: and a man from Banū al-Khaṣīb. When Banū al-Ḍubayb and the army at Fayfāʾ Madān heard of that, a group of them mounted, and among those who mounted with them was Ḥassān b. Millah, on a horse belonging to Suwayd b. Zayd called al-ʿAjājah, and Unayf b. Millah on a horse belonging to Millah called Righāl, and Abū Zayd b. ʿAmr on a horse called Shamir. They set off until when they drew near the army, Abū Zayd and Ḥassān said to Unayf b. Millah: Hold back from us and turn away, for we fear your tongue. So he stopped behind them, but they had not gone far from him when his horse began to paw the ground with its forelegs and prance. He said: I am more protective of the two men than you are of the two horses. So he gave it rein until he caught up with them. They said to him: Since you have done what you have done, hold your tongue from us, and do not bring us misfortune today. So they agreed among themselves that none of them would speak except Ḥassān b. Millah. There had been a word among them in the Jāhiliyyah which some of them knew from others: when one of them wanted to strike with his sword, he said: Būrā or Thūrā. When they came out before the army, the people came rushing toward them. Ḥassān said to them: We are Muslims. The first to meet them was a man on a black horse, who came driving them along. Unayf said: Būrā. Ḥassān said: Gently! When they stopped before Zayd b. Ḥārithah, Ḥassān said: We are Muslims. Zayd said to him: Then recite the Mother of the Book. Ḥassān recited it. Zayd b. Ḥārithah said: Call out in the army that God has forbidden us the gap in the people's ranks from which they came, except for one who betrays.

✧ [Their arrival to the Messenger and the poetry of Abu Jiʿāl] Ibn Isḥāq said: And when the sister of Ḥassān b. Millah, who was the wife of Abu Wabr b. ʿAdī b. Umayyah b. al-Ḍubayb, was among the captives, Zayd said to him: “Take her.” She seized his flanks and said, Umm al-Fizr al-Ḍulaʿiyyah: “Will you take away your daughters and leave your mothers?” One of the Banū al-Khaṣīb said: “They are the Banū al-Ḍubayb, and the magic of their tongues lasts the whole day.” Some of the army heard her and informed Zayd b. Ḥārithah of it, so he ordered that the sister of Ḥassān be released, and her hands were untied from his flanks. He said to her: “Sit with the daughters of your paternal uncle until God decides concerning them as He wills.” Then they returned, and he forbade the army from descending into their valley from which they had come. They spent the evening among their families, and they had milked at night a herd belonging to Suwayd b. Zayd. When they had drunk their evening milk, they mounted and rode to Rifāʿah b. Zayd. Among those who rode to Rifāʿah b. Zayd that night were Abu Zayd b. ʿAmr, Abu Shimās b. ʿAmr, Suwayd b. Zayd, Baʿjah b. Zayd, Bardhaʿ b. Zayd, Thaʿlabah b. Zayd, Mukharrabah b. ʿAdī, Unayf b. Millah, and Ḥassān b. Millah, until they came to Rifāʿah b. Zayd at Kurāʿ Ribah, on the edge of the ḥarrah, by a well there in the Ḥarrat Laylā. Ḥassān b. Millah said to him: “You sit milking goats while the women of Judhām are captives, deceived by your letter which I brought.” So Rifāʿah b. Zayd called for a camel of his and began fastening his saddle upon it, saying: “Are you alive, or do you call a living one?” Then he departed in the morning, and with him were they, with Umayyah b. Ḍafārah, the brother of the slain al-Khaṣībī, setting out early from the edge of the ḥarrah. They journeyed toward the interior of Madinah for three nights. When they entered Madinah and reached the mosque, a man among the people looked at them and said: “Do not make your camels kneel, lest their forelegs be cut.” So they dismounted while the camels were still standing. When they entered upon the Messenger of God ﷺ and he saw them, he gestured to them with his hand: “Come up from behind the people.” When Rifāʿah b. Zayd began to speak, a man among the people stood up and said: “O Messenger of God, these are a people of sorcerers,” repeating it twice. Rifāʿah b. Zayd said: “May God have mercy on him who does not mention us on this day of ours except with good.” Then Rifāʿah b. Zayd handed his letter to the Messenger of God ﷺ, the one he had written for him, and said: “Here you are, O Messenger of God: old is his letter, recent is his treachery.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Read it, O boy, and proclaim it.” When he read his letter, he questioned him, and they told him the news. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “What shall I do about the slain?” three times. Rifāʿah said: “You, O Messenger of God, know best. We do not forbid you what is lawful, nor do we make lawful for you what is forbidden.” Abu Zayd b. ʿAmr said: “Release for us, O Messenger of God, those who are alive, and whoever has been killed is beneath these feet of mine.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: “Abu Zayd has spoken truly. Ride with them, O ʿAlī.” ʿAlī ؓ said to him: “O Messenger of God, Zayd will not obey me.” He said: “Then take this sword of mine,” and he gave him his sword. ʿAlī said: “O Messenger of God, I have no riding camel to mount.” So they mounted him on a camel belonging to Thaʿlabah b. ʿAmr, called Mikḥāl. They departed, and there was a messenger of Zayd b. Ḥārithah on a she-camel among the camels of Abu Wabr, called al-Shimr. They made him dismount from it. He said: “O ʿAlī, what is my affair?” He said: “What is theirs? They recognized him and seized him.” Then they went on and met the army at Fayfāʾ al-Faḥlatayn. They took what was in their hands, until they were pulling away the woman's saddle cushion from beneath the saddle. Abu Jiʿāl said when they had finished their affair: A reproaching woman, yet she did not reproach with wisdom; Were it not for us, the blaze would have been kindled with her. She defended her two daughters among the captives, Yet no easy release was hoped for her. Had she been left to ʿŪṣ and Aws, Matters of release would have confounded her. Had she witnessed our mounts in Egypt, Fearing that the journey would be hastened with her, We would have brought water to Yathrib out of protection For a home — indeed, it is a near and pressing need — With every tried warrior, like the lion, sturdy, Upon the frames of a swift, enduring she-camel. May every army at Yathrib be ransom for Abu Sulaymā When the chests clashed together, On the morning when you see the tried one humbled, Apart from the people, his head spinning around. Ibn Hishām said: His saying “no easy release was hoped for her” and his saying “matters of release” are from other than Ibn Isḥāq. The expedition is complete, and we return to the detailed mention of the raiding parties and expeditions. Ibn Isḥāq said: And the expedition of Zayd b. Ḥārithah also to al-Ṭaraf from the direction of Nakhl, on the road to Iraq.

Ḥārithah also to Wādī al-Qurā, where he met Banū Fazārah. Some of his companions were slain in it, and Zayd was carried off wounded from among the slain. In it Wird b. ʿAmr b. Madāsh was slain—he was one of Banū Saʿd b. Hudhayl—struck down by one of Banū Badr. Ibn Hishām said: Saʿd b. Hudhaym. [Zayd’s return against them] Ibn Isḥāq said: When Zayd b. Ḥārithah arrived, he swore that no washing from major impurity would touch his head until he raided Banū Fazārah. When he recovered from his wounds, the Messenger of God ﷺ sent him against Banū Fazārah in an army, and he killed them at Wādī al-Qurā and took captives among them. Qays b. al-Musaḥḥar al-Yaʿmurī killed Masʿadah b. Ḥakamah b. Mālik b. Ḥudhayfah b. Badr. Umm Qirfah Fāṭimah bt. Rabīʿah b. Badr was taken captive—she was a very old woman, married to Mālik b. Ḥudhayfah b. Badr—along with a daughter of hers and ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿadah. Zayd b. Ḥārithah ordered Qays b. al-Musaḥḥar to kill Umm Qirfah, and he killed her with a violent killing. Then they came to the Messenger of God ﷺ with the daughter of Umm Qirfah and with the son of Masʿadah. [The affair of Umm Qirfah] The daughter of Umm Qirfah belonged to Salamah b. ʿAmr b. al-Akwaʿ; he was the one who had captured her. She was from a noble house among her people; the Arabs used to say: “If you were mightier than Umm Qirfah, you would add nothing.” Salamah asked the Messenger of God ﷺ for her, and he gave her to him. He then gave her as a gift to his maternal uncle Ḥazn b. Abī Wahb, and she bore him ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥazn.

Ibn Hishām said: Some say Ibn Rāzim. The Killing of al-Yasīr Among the story of al-Yasīr b. Rizām was that he was in Khaybar gathering Ghaṭafān to raid the Messenger of God ﷺ. So the Messenger of God ﷺ sent to him ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah with a group of his companions, among them ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays, an ally of the Banū Salimah. When they came to him, they spoke with him and drew near to him and said to him, "If you come to the Messenger of God ﷺ, he will employ you and honor you." They continued with him until he departed with them with a group of Jews. ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays mounted him on his camel, until when he was at al-Qarqarah from Khaybar, at six miles, al-Yasīr b. Rizām regretted his journey to the Messenger of God ﷺ. ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays perceived him, and he was reaching for his sword, so he rushed upon him, then struck him with the sword and cut off his leg. Al-Yasīr struck him with a goad in his hand of shawḥaṭ wood and wounded his head. Nubayḥ: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him to him while he was at Nakhlah or at ʿUranah, gathering people against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to raid him, and he killed him. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr narrated to me, saying: ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned me and said: "It has reached me that Ibn Sufyān b. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, describe him to me so that I may recognize him." He said: "When you see him, he will remind you of Satan. A sign between you and him is that when you see him, you will feel a shudder." He said: I went out, wearing my sword across my body, until I came upon him while he was among some women's camel-litters, seeking a place for them to alight, and it was the time of the afternoon prayer. When I saw him, I felt what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had told me of the shudder, so I went toward him, and I feared that there might be a struggle between me and him that would keep me from the prayer, so I prayed while walking toward him, making gestures with my head. When I reached him, he said: "Who is the man?" I said: "A man of the Arabs who has heard of you and of your gathering against this man, so he has come to you for that." He said: "Indeed, I am engaged in that." He said: I walked with him for a while, until when I was able, I attacked him with the sword and killed him. Then I left, leaving his women bent over him. When I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he saw me, he said: "The face has prospered." I said: "I have killed him, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "You have spoken the truth."

✧ Poem of Ibn Unays on his killing of Ibn Nubayḥ. Ibn Hishām said: And ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays said concerning that: I left Ibn Thawr like a young camel, and around him Wailing women rending every slit-open garment. I reached him while the women's litters were behind me and behind him, With a white sword of water of iron, Indian-made, Biting into the skulls of the armored ones, as if it were A meteor of ghaḍā wood from a blazing firebrand. I said to him while the sword was biting his head: I am Ibn Unays, a horseman, not one who stays behind. I am the son of one whose cooking-pot time never brought down, Wide is the courtyard of his abode, not straitened. And I said to him: Take it from the stroke of a noble one, A ḥanīf upon the religion of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. And I was such that when the Prophet ﷺ was concerned about a disbeliever, I would race to him with tongue and with hand. The expedition is complete, and we return to the account of the missions.

✧ [Some of those taken captive and some of those killed, and Salmā's poetry about that] Ibn Isḥāq said: When their captives were brought to the Messenger of God ﷺ, a delegation of Banū Tamīm rode concerning them and came to the Messenger of God ﷺ. Among them were Rabīʿah b. Rafīʿ, Sabrah b. ʿAmr, al-Qaʿqāʿ b. Maʿbad, Wardān b. Muḥriz, Qays b. ʿĀṣim, Mālik b. ʿAmr, al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis, and Firās b. Ḥābis. They spoke to the Messenger of God ﷺ about them, and he freed some and ransomed others. Among those killed that day from Banū al-ʿAnbar were ʿAbd Allāh and two brothers of his, the sons of Wahb, Shaddād b. Firās, and Ḥanẓalah b. Dārim. Among their women taken captive that day were Asmāʾ bt. Mālik, Kās bt. Arī, Najwah bt. Nahd, Jumayʿah bt. Qays, and ʿAmrah bt. Maṭar. On that day Salmā bt. ʿAttāb said: By my life, ʿAdī b. Jundab met from evil a deep, toilsome abyss; enemies encompassed it from every side, and its might and its fortunes were hidden from it. [Al-Farazdaq's poetry about that] Ibn Hishām said: Al-Farazdaq said about that: And in the presence of the Messenger of God, Ibn Ḥābis stood with the plan of one resolute, ascending to glory. He released the captives who were in his bonds, their necks fettered in shackles. He sufficed the mothers of those left behind, upon them, the cost of ransom or the arrows of division. These verses are in an ode of his. ʿAdī b. Jundub is from Banū al-ʿAnbar, and al-ʿAnbar is b. ʿAmr b. Tamīm.

✧ The expedition of Ghālib b. ʿAbd Allāh to the land of Banū Murrah [the killing of Mirdās]. Ibn Isḥāq said: And the expedition of Ghālib b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Kalbī—Kalb of Layth—to the land of Banū Murrah. He seized there Mirdās b. Nahīk, an ally of theirs from al-Ḥuraqah, of Juhaynah. Usāmah b. Zayd and a man from the Anṣār killed him. Ibn Hishām said: Al-Ḥuraqah, according to what Abū ʿUbaydah narrated to me. Ibn Isḥāq said: And part of his account from Usāmah b. Zayd, who said: I and a man from the Anṣār caught up with him, and when we brandished our weapons against him, he said, “I bear witness that there is no god but God.” He said: But we did not desist from him until we killed him. When we came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, we told him his story, and he said, “O Usāmah, who will answer for you regarding ‘There is no god but God’?” I said, “O Messenger of God, he only said it to seek protection from being killed.” He said, “Who will answer for you regarding it, O Usāmah?” He said: By the One who sent him with the truth, he kept repeating it to me until I wished that what had passed of my Islam had not been, and that I had only become a Muslim that day, and that I had not killed him. I said, “Give me respite, O Messenger of God, for I pledge to God that I will never kill a man who says ‘There is no god but God’ ever again.” He said, “You say this after I am gone, O Usāmah?” I said, “After you are gone.”

✧ The expedition of ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ to Dhāt al-Salāsil [the dispatch of ʿAmr and then his reinforcement] The expedition of ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ to Dhāt al-Salāsil in the land of Banū ʿUdhrah. Part of the story is that the Messenger of God ﷺ sent him to summon the Arabs to Syria. That was because the mother of al-ʿĀṣ b. Wāʾil was a woman of Balī, and the Messenger of God ﷺ sent him to them to win their friendship for that purpose. When he was at a watering place in the land of Judhām called al-Salsal, after which that expedition was named the expedition of Dhāt al-Salāsil, he became afraid and sent to the Messenger of God ﷺ asking for reinforcements. The Messenger of God ﷺ sent Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ with the first Muhājirūn, among them Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, and said to Abū ʿUbaydah when he sent him: "Do not disagree." Abū ʿUbaydah set out, and when he came to ʿAmr, ʿAmr said to him: "You have only come as a reinforcement for me." Abū ʿUbaydah said: "No, but I am as I am, and you are as you are." Abū ʿUbaydah was a gentle, easy-going man, and worldly matters weighed lightly on him. ʿAmr said to him: "Rather, you are a reinforcement for me." Abū ʿUbaydah said: "O ʿAmr, the Messenger of God ﷺ said to me: 'Do not disagree.' If you disobey me, I will obey you." ʿAmr said: "Then I am the commander over you, and you are my reinforcement." Abū ʿUbaydah said: "Have it your way." So ʿAmr led the people in prayer.

✧ [The testament of Abū Bakr to Rāfiʿ b. Abī Rāfiʿ] He said: And among the accounts in this expedition was that Rāfiʿ b. Abī Rāfiʿ al-Ṭāʾī, that is Rāfiʿ b. ʿUmayrah, used to relate—according to what has reached me—on his own authority, saying: I was a Christian man and was named Sarjis. I was the most knowledgeable of people and the best guided of them through this sand. In the Jāhiliyyah I used to bury water in ostrich eggs in the tracts of the sand, then I would raid the people’s camels; and when I brought them into the sand I overcame them, and no one was able to pursue me in it, until I passed by that water which I had hidden in the ostrich eggs and drew it out and drank from it. When I became Muslim I went out on that expedition in which the Messenger of God ﷺ sent ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ to Dhāt al-Salāsil. He said: I said, “By God, I shall choose a companion for myself.” He said: So I accompanied Abū Bakr. He said: I was with him in his saddle. He said: He had a Fadakī cloak of his; when we dismounted he spread it out, and when we mounted he put it on, then fastened it upon himself with a pin of his. He said: That is why the people of Najd, when they apostatized as disbelievers, used to say, “We pledge allegiance to the owner of the cloak.” He said: When we drew near Madinah on the return, he said: I said, “O Abū Bakr, I only accompanied you so that God might benefit me through you; so counsel me and teach me.” He said: “Even if you had not asked me that, I would have done it. I command you to declare God’s oneness and not associate anything with Him, to establish the prayer, to pay the zakāh, to fast Ramaḍān, to perform the pilgrimage to this House, to wash from major ritual impurity, and never to seek command over any Muslim man.” He said: I said, “O Abū Bakr, as for me, by God, I hope never to associate anyone with God; as for the prayer, I shall never abandon it, God willing; as for the zakāh, if I have wealth I shall pay it, God willing; as for Ramaḍān, I shall never abandon it, God willing; as for the ḥajj, if I am able I shall perform it, God willing; as for major ritual impurity, I shall wash from it, God willing; but as for command, I have seen, O Abū Bakr, that people gain honor with the Messenger of God ﷺ and with the people only through it, so why do you forbid me from it?” He said: “You have asked me to exert myself in counsel so that I may exert myself for you, and I shall tell you about that. God, mighty and glorious, sent Muḥammad ﷺ with this religion, and he strove for it until the people entered it willingly and unwillingly. When they entered it they became God’s refugees, His neighbors, and under His protection. Beware lest you violate God’s protection concerning His neighbors, lest God pursue you with His violated protection. One of you may be violated in the person of his neighbor, and he remains with his muscles bulging, angry for his neighbor because a sheep or a camel of his was struck; but God is more intense in anger for His neighbor.” He said: I parted from him on that. He said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ was taken and Abū Bakr was placed in command over the people, he said: I came to him and said, “O Abū Bakr, did you not forbid me from seeking command over two Muslim men?” He said: “Yes, and I still forbid you from that now.” He said: I said to him, “Then what led you to take charge of the people’s affairs?” He said: “I found no way to avoid it; I feared division for the community of Muḥammad ﷺ.”

✧ [ The division of the camel by ʿAwf al-Ashjaʿī among a people ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb informed me that he was told on the authority of ʿAwf b. Mālik al-Ashjaʿī, who said: I was on the expedition in which the Messenger of God ﷺ sent ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ to Dhāt al-Salāsil. He said: I accompanied Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, and I passed by a people who had a camel of theirs which they had slaughtered, but they were unable to cut it up. He said: I was a skillful and expert butcher. He said: I said: Will you give me a tenth of it if I divide it among you? They said: Yes. He said: I took the two knives and cut it up on the spot, and I took a portion from it and carried it to my companions, and we cooked it and ate it. Abū Bakr and ʿUmar ؓ said to me: Where did you get this meat, O ʿAwf? He said: I told them its story. They said: By God, you did not do well when you fed us this. Then they got up and vomited what was in their stomachs of it. He said: When the people returned from that journey, I was the first to arrive to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: I came to him while he was praying in his house. He said: I said: Peace be upon you, O Messenger of God, and the mercy of God and His blessings. He said: Is it ʿAwf b. Mālik? He said: I said: Yes, may my father and mother be your ransom. He said: The companion of the camel? And the Messenger of God ﷺ did not add anything further to me.

✧ The expedition of Ibn Abī Ḥadrad to Baṭn Iḍam, and the killing of ʿĀmir b. al-Aḍbaṭ al-Ashjaʿī [And the expedition of Ibn Abī Ḥadrad and his companions to Baṭn Iḍam, and it was before the conquest] [The slaying of Ibn al-Aḍbaṭ and what was revealed concerning it] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yazīd b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Qusayṭ related to me, from al-Qaʿqāʿ b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Ḥadrad, from his father ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Ḥadrad, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ sent us to Iḍam among a party of Muslims, among them Abū Qatādah al-Ḥārith b. Ribʿī and Muḥallim b. Jaththāmah b. Qays. We went out until when we were at Baṭn Iḍam, ʿĀmir b. al-Aḍbaṭ al-Ashjaʿī passed by us on a camel of his, and with him he had a small water-skin and a skin of milk. He said: When he passed by us, he greeted us with the greeting of Islam, so we held back from him, but Muḥallim b. Jaththāmah attacked him and killed him because of something that was between him and him, and took his camel and his small water-skin. He said: When we came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and told him the news, it was revealed concerning us: "O you who believe, when you go forth in the way of God, be discerning, and do not say to one who offers you peace, 'You are not a believer,' seeking the goods of the life of this world" to the end of the verse. Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿAmr b. al-ʿAlāʾ read: "and do not say to one who offers you peace, 'You are not a believer'" because of this ḥadīth.

✧ Ibn Ḥābis and Ibn Ḥiṣn contend before the Messenger concerning the blood of Ibn al-Aḍbaṭ. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr related to me, saying: I heard Ziyād b. Ḍumayra b. Saʿd al-Sulamī relate from ʿUrwa b. al-Zubayr, from his father, from his grandfather—both of whom had witnessed Ḥunayn with the Messenger of God ﷺ—he said: The Messenger of God ﷺ performed the noon prayer with us, then went to the shade of a tree and sat beneath it, while he was at Ḥunayn. Then al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis and ʿUyayna b. Ḥiṣn b. Ḥudhayfa b. Badr rose and went to him, disputing about ʿĀmir b. Aḍbaṭ al-Ashjaʿī. ʿUyayna was demanding the blood of ʿĀmir—he was then the chief of Ghaṭafān—while al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis was defending Muḥallim b. Jaththāma because of his position in Khunduf. They took turns presenting their dispute before the Messenger of God ﷺ while we listened, and we heard ʿUyayna b. Ḥiṣn say: “By God, O Messenger of God, I will not leave him until I make his women taste the burning like that which he made my women taste.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Rather, you will take the bloodwit, fifty in this journey of ours and fifty when we return,” but he refused. Then a man of the Banū Layth stood up, called Mukaythir—short and compact; Ibn Hishām said: Mukaytil—and said: “By God, O Messenger of God, I find no likeness for this slain man in the first age of Islam except a flock that came down to water and its foremost were shot, so the rest fled. Establish the practice today, and change it tomorrow.” He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ raised his hand and said: “Rather, you will take the bloodwit, fifty in this journey of ours and fifty when we return.” He said: So they accepted the bloodwit. He said: Then they said: “Where is this companion of yours, that the Messenger of God ﷺ may seek forgiveness for him?” He said: A tall, dark, sturdy man stood up, wearing a fine garment of his, in which he had prepared himself for execution, until he sat before the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said to him: “What is your name?” He said: “I am Muḥallim b. Jaththāma.” He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ raised his hand then said: “O God, do not forgive Muḥallim b. Jaththāma”—three times. He said: He rose, catching his tears with the edge of his cloak. He said: As for us, we say among ourselves: We hope that the Messenger of God ﷺ did seek forgiveness for him, but as for what appeared from the Messenger of God ﷺ, it was this.

✧ [The death of Muḥallim and what happened to him] Ibn Isḥāq said: And one whom I do not suspect narrated to me from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said when he sat before him: “You gave him security by God, then you killed him.” Then he said to him the words that he said. He said: By God, Muḥallim b. Jaththāmah remained only seven days until he died, and the earth, by the One in Whose hand is the soul of al-Ḥasan, cast him out. Then they returned him to it, and the earth cast him out. Then they returned him again, and it cast him out. So when his people were overcome, they went to two stone slabs and laid him flat between them, then heaped stones upon him until they buried him. He said: His affair reached the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said: “By God, the earth closes over one who is worse than him, but God wished to admonish you concerning the sanctity of what is between you by what He showed you of him.”

Ḥābis spoke and was alone with them: O assembly of Qays, you have withheld from the Messenger of God ﷺ a slain man by whom he sought to set the people right. Are you secure that the Messenger of God ﷺ will not curse you, and God curse you with his curse, or that he will not be angry with you, and God be angry with you with his anger? By God, in whose hand is the soul of al-Aqraʿ, you will surrender him to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he will do with him what he wishes, or I will bring fifty men from Banū Tamīm who will all testify by God: Your companion was slain as an unbeliever, who never prayed, and I will annul his blood. When they heard that, they accepted the blood-money. Ibn Hishām said: He is Muḥallim throughout this narrative, from other than Ibn Isḥāq, and he is Muḥallim b. Jaththāmah b. Qays al-Laythī. And Ibn Isḥāq said: Mulajjam, according to what Ziyād narrated to us from him.

✧ The expedition of Ibn Abī Ḥadrad to kill Rifāʿah b. Qays al-Jushamī [its cause]. Ibn Isḥāq said: And the expedition of Ibn Abī Ḥadrad al-Aslamī to al-Ghābah. Its story, as it reached me, from one I do not suspect, from Ibn Abī Ḥadrad, who said: I married a woman of my people and gave her a dowry of two hundred dirhams. He said: I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ to seek his help with my marriage. He said: "How much dowry did you give?" I said: "Two hundred dirhams, O Messenger of God." He said: "Glory be to God! Even if you were taking dirhams from the belly of a valley, you would not increase it. By God, I have nothing with which to help you." He said: I waited for some days. Then a man of Banū Jusham b. Muʿāwiyah, called Rifāʿah b. Qays or Qays b. Rifāʿah, came with a great host of Banū Jusham until he halted with his people and those with him at al-Ghābah, intending to gather Qays against the Messenger of God ﷺ. He had renown and nobility among Jusham. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ summoned me and two other Muslims with me and said: "Go out to this man until you bring back news and knowledge of him." He said: He provided us with a lean old camel, and one of us was mounted on it. By God, it could not stand with him because of its weakness until men propped it up from behind with their hands, until it rose, and it nearly could not. Then he said: "Take turns riding it to get there."

✧ [The Muslims' victory and Ibn Abī Ḥadrad's share of booty with which he sought help for marriage] He said: We went out with our weapons of arrows and swords, until we came near the settlement at evening time with the setting of the sun. He said: I lay in wait in one direction, and I commanded my two companions, and they lay in wait in another direction of the settlement of the people; and I said to them: When you hear me pronounce the takbīr and charge in the direction of the camp, then pronounce the takbīr and charge with me. He said: By God, we were thus waiting for the people's negligence, or to seize something from them. He said: The night had covered us until the darkness of evening had passed, and they had a shepherd who had gone out to pasture in that land, and he was late in returning to them, so that they feared for him. He said: Their companion, Rifāʿah b. Qays, arose, took his sword, and placed it on his neck, then said: By God, I will follow the trace of this shepherd of ours, for some evil has befallen him. A group of those with him said to him: By God, do not go; we will suffice you. He said: By God, none shall go but I. They said: Then we will be with you. He said: By God, none of you shall follow me. He said: He went out until he passed by me. He said: When he came within my reach, I shot him with my arrow, and I placed it in his heart. He said: By God, he did not speak, and I leaped upon him and cut off his head. He said: Then I charged in the direction of the camp, and I pronounced the takbīr, and my two companions charged and pronounced the takbīr. He said: By God, there was nothing but flight for those in it—"to you, to you"—with all that they could carry of their women and children, and what was light for them of their property. He said: We drove away a great number of camels and many sheep, and we brought them to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: And I came with his head carrying it with me. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ helped me from those camels with thirteen camels for my bride-price, and I gathered my family to me.

✧ The expedition of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf to Dūmat al-Jandal. [Something of the Messenger's admonition to his people] Ibn Isḥāq said: And one whom I do not suspect narrated to me from ʿAṭāʾ b. Abī Rabāḥ, who said: I heard a man from the people of al-Baṣrah asking ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb about sending the turban's tail behind a man when he puts it on. He said: So ʿAbd Allāh said: I shall inform you, if Allah wills, about that with knowledge. I was the tenth of ten men from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in his mosque: Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, ʿAlī, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, Ibn Masʿūd, Muʿādh b. Jabal, Ḥudhayfah b. al-Yamān, Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, and I, with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when a young man from the Anṣār came forward, greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then sat down, and said: O Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless you, which of the believers is best? He said: The one with the best character. He said: Then which of the believers is most astute? He said: The one who remembers death most, and the one who prepares best for it before it descends upon him. Those are the astute ones. Then the young man fell silent, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to us and said: O company of Emigrants, five traits, if they befall you—and I seek refuge with Allah that you should ever meet them: Immorality never appears among a people to the point that they proclaim it openly, but that plague and diseases that were not present among their ancestors who passed away appear among them. They do not diminish the measure and the balance, but that they are seized by years of scarcity, severity of hardship, and the tyranny of the ruler. They do not withhold the zakāh from their wealth, but that rain from the sky is withheld from them; were it not for the beasts, they would not be given rain. They do not break the covenant of Allah and the covenant of His Messenger, but that an enemy from other than them is given power over them, and he seizes some of what was in their hands. And as long as their leaders do not judge by the Book of Allah and arrogate to themselves in what Allah has sent down, Allah will set their might among themselves.

✧ [Appointment of Ibn ʿAwf as commander and his turbaning] Then he commanded ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf to equip himself for an expedition on which he sent him. He arose in the morning having put on a black cotton turban. The Messenger of God ﷺ drew him near to himself, then untied it, then turbaned him with it, leaving four fingers or so hanging down behind. Then he said: “Thus, O Ibn ʿAwf, put on the turban, for it is better and more fitting.” Then he commanded Bilāl to hand over the banner to him. He handed it over to him, and he praised God Most High and prayed for himself, then he said: “Take it, O Ibn ʿAwf. Raid together in the way of God, and fight those who disbelieve in God. Do not steal from the spoils, do not act treacherously, do not mutilate, and do not kill a child. This is the covenant of God and the practice of His Prophet among you.” So ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf took the banner. Ibn Hishām said: He went out to Dūmat al-Jandal.

✧ The expedition of Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ to the seashore [the exhaustion of food and the story of the sea creature] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿUbādah b. al-Walīd b. ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ sent a raiding party to the seashore, commanded by Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ, and he provisioned them with a sack of dates. He began rationing those dates to them, until it came to the point that he counted them out for them one by one. He said: Then the dates ran out, to the extent that each man among them was given a single date every day. He said: One day he divided them among us. He said: One date was missing for a man, and we felt its loss that day. He said: When hunger exhausted us, God brought out for us a creature from the sea, and we obtained of its meat and fat, and we stayed with it for twenty nights, until we grew fat and our bodies recovered moisture. Our commander took a rib from among its ribs, and set it up along his path. Then he ordered the largest camel among us to be brought, and he mounted the largest man among us upon it. He said: He sat upon it, and he passed beneath that rib without his head touching it. He said: When we came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, we told him its story and asked him about what we had done in that matter by eating it. He said: 'It is provision which God provided for you.'

✧ The dispatch of ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī to fight Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb and what he did on his way [His arrival in Makkah and the people's recognition of him] Ibn Hishām said: Among the expeditions and raiding parties of the Messenger of God ﷺ which Ibn Isḥāq did not mention is the dispatch of ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī. The Messenger of God ﷺ sent him, according to what was told to me by one of the people of knowledge whom I trust, after the killing of Khubayb b. ʿAdī and his companions, to Makkah, and ordered him to kill Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb. He sent with him Jabbār b. Ṣakhr al-Anṣārī. They set out until they reached Makkah and tethered their two camels in a ravine of the ravines of Yaʾjaj. Then they entered Makkah at night. Jabbār said to ʿAmr: "Would that we circumambulated the House and prayed two rakʿahs?" ʿAmr said: "The people, when they have eaten their evening meal, sit in their courtyards." He said: "Not at all, God willing." ʿAmr said: So we circumambulated the House and prayed, then we went out seeking Abū Sufyān. By God, while we were walking in Makkah, a man of the people of Makkah looked at me and recognized me. He said: "ʿAmr b. Umayyah! By God, he has not come here except for evil." I said to my companion: "Flee!" We went out running until we ascended a mountain, and they came out in pursuit of us. When we had climbed the mountain, they despaired of us and turned back. We entered a cave in the mountain and spent the night in it, having taken stones and piled them up as a barrier before us. When morning came, a man of Quraysh came early leading a horse of his and letting it graze freely. He came upon us while we were in the cave. I said: "If he sees us, he will cry out against us, and we will be seized and killed." [His killing of Abū Sufyān and his flight] He said: I had with me a dagger which I had prepared for Abū Sufyān. I went out to him and struck him on the chest with a blow, and he cried out a cry that the people of Makkah heard. I returned and entered my place. The people came running to him while he was at his last breath. They said: "Who struck you?" He said: "ʿAmr b. Umayyah." Death overcame him, and he died on the spot, and he did not point out our location. They carried him away. When evening came, I said to my companion: "Flee!" We left Makkah at night, heading for Madinah. We passed by the guards while they were guarding the corpse of Khubayb b. ʿAdī. One of them said: "By God, I have never seen a night in which anything more resembles the gait of ʿAmr b. Umayyah; were it not that he is in Madinah, I would say it is ʿAmr b. Umayyah." He said: When he came alongside the wooden stake, he rushed upon it, took it, and carried it off. They both went out at a run, and they went out after him until he came to a bank at the bottom of the watercourse of Yaʾjaj. He threw the stake into the bank, and God hid it from them, so they could not find it. He said: I said to my companion: "Flee, flee, until you reach your camel and mount it, for I will keep the people occupied away from you." The Anṣārī had no skill in running. [His killing of a Bakrī in a cave] He said: I went on until I came out at Ḍajnān, then I took shelter in a mountain and entered a cave. While I was in it, an old one-eyed man of the Banū al-Dīl entered upon me with a small flock of sheep of his. He said: "Who is the man?" I said: "From the Banū Bakr. And who are you?" He said: "From the Banū Bakr." I said: "Welcome." He lay down, then raised his voice in song and said: "I am not a Muslim as long as I live, nor am I close to the religion of the Muslims." I said to myself: You will learn. I gave him respite until he fell asleep. Then I took my bow and placed its tip in his sound eye, then I leaned upon it until it reached the bone. Then I went out fleeing until I came to al-ʿArj, then I took the road of Rakūbah until I descended into al-Naqīʿ. There were two men of Quraysh, of the polytheists, whom Quraysh had sent as spies to Madinah to observe and seek information. I said: "Surrender yourselves as captives." They refused. I shot one of them with an arrow and killed him, and the other surrendered as a captive. I bound him with a rope and brought him to Madinah.

✧ The Detachment of Zayd b. Ḥārithah to Madyan [His dispatch along with Ḍumayrah and the story of the captives] Ibn Hishām said: And the detachment of Zayd b. Ḥārithah to Madyan. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥasan b. Ḥasan mentioned that on the authority of his mother Fāṭimah bt. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī, may God be pleased with them, that the Messenger of God ﷺ sent Zayd b. Ḥārithah toward Madyan, and with him was Ḍumayrah, the client of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, may God be pleased with him, and a brother of his. She said: He captured some captives from the people of Mīnāʾ, which is the coasts, and in it there was a gathering of people. They were sold, and they were separated from one another. The Messenger of God ﷺ came out while they were weeping, and he said: "What is the matter with them?" It was said: "O Messenger of God, they have been separated from one another." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Do not sell them except all together." Ibn Hishām said: He meant the mothers and the children.

✧ Detachment of Sālim b. ʿUmayr to kill Abū ʿAfak [The cause of Abū ʿAfak's hypocrisy] Ibn Isḥāq said: And the expedition of Sālim b. ʿUmayr to kill Abū ʿAfak, one of the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, then of the Banū ʿUbaydah. His hypocrisy had emerged when the Messenger of God ﷺ killed al-Ḥārith b. Suwayd b. Then a rider came to them and split them apart: Lawful, unlawful—for all manner of things. If only you had believed in might or kingship, You would have followed Tubbaʿ. [Ibn ʿUmayr kills him and the poem of al-Muzayriyyah] The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Who will deal with this vile one for me?' So Sālim b. ʿUmayr, brother of the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, and one of the Weepers, went out and killed him. Umāmah al-Muzayriyyah said about that: You deny the religion of God and the man Aḥmad. By the life of the One who made you safe—evil is what He bestows upon you: a ḥanīf at the end of the night gave you A thrust, Abū ʿAfak—take it, despite your old age.

✧ Expedition of ʿUmayr b. ʿAdī al-Khiṭmī to kill ʿAṣmāʾ bt. Marwān [her hypocrisy and her poetry about that] And the expedition of ʿUmayr b. ʿAdī al-Khiṭmī against ʿAṣmāʾ bt. Marwān, who was of the Banū Umayyah b. Zayd. When Abū ʿAfak was killed, she became a hypocrite. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith b. al-Fuḍayl mentioned from his father, saying: She was married to a man of the Banū Khiṭmah called Yazīd b. Zayd, and she said, disparaging Islam and its people: By the anus of Banū Mālik and al-Nabīt and ʿAwf, and by the anus of Banū al-Khazraj: you have obeyed a stranger who is not of you, not from Murād nor from Madhḥij. Do you hope for him after the killing of the chiefs, as one hopes for the broth of the well-cooked meat? Is there no man of pride who seeks a moment of heedlessness, and cuts off the hope of the one who hopes? [Hassān's poetry in reply to her] He said: Hassān b. Thābit answered her, saying: Banū Wāʾil and Banū Wāqif and Khiṭmah are less than Banū al-Khazraj. Whenever she foolishly called, woe to her, with her wailing and the fates come, she roused a noble youth whose lineage is generous, noble in his entrances and his exits. He dyed her with the blood of the veins after nightfall, and he was not grieved. [The Khiṭmī's going out to kill her] So the Messenger of God ﷺ said, when that reached him: "Is there no one to rid me of Ibnat Marwān?" ʿUmayr b. ʿAdī al-Khiṭmī heard that from the speech of the Messenger of God ﷺ, while he was with him. When evening came of that night, he went by night to her in her house and killed her. Then he came in the morning with the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of God, I have killed her." He said: "You have helped God and His Messenger, O ʿUmayr." He said: "Is there anything upon me concerning her affair, O Messenger of God?" He said: "Two goats will not butt each other over her."

✧ [The affair of Banū Khaṭmah] So ʿUmayr returned to his people, and Banū Khaṭmah on that day were many, their attention directed to the affair of the daughter of Marwān, and she had on that day five sons, men. When ʿUmayr b. ʿAdī came to them from the Messenger of God ﷺ, he said: “O Banū Khaṭmah, I have killed the daughter of Marwān, so plot against me all together, then give me no respite.” That day was the first time Islam became mighty in the dwellings of Banū Khaṭmah, and those of them who had accepted Islam used to conceal their Islam among them. The first of Banū Khaṭmah to accept Islam was ʿUmayr b. ʿAdī—he is the one called al-Qāriʾ—and ʿAbd Allāh b. Aws, and Khuzaymah b. Thābit. And on the day the daughter of Marwān was killed, men of Banū Khaṭmah accepted Islam, when they saw the might of Islam.

✧ The capture of Thumāmah b. Uthāl al-Ḥanafī and his Islam [and the expedition that captured Thumāmah b. Uthāl al-Ḥanafī] [his Islam] It reached me from Abū Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from Abū Hurayrah, that he said: The cavalry of the Messenger of God ﷺ went out and captured a man from Banū Ḥanīfah, not knowing who he was, until they brought him to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: “Do you know whom you have captured? This is Thumāmah b. Uthāl al-Ḥanafī. Treat his captivity well.” The Messenger of God ﷺ then returned to his family and said: “Collect whatever food you have and send it to him.” He commanded that his milch-camel be brought to him morning and evening. It did not have the effect on Thumāmah that it might. The Messenger of God ﷺ would come to him and say: “Become a Muslim, O Thumāmah.” He would reply: “Ah, O Muḥammad, if you kill, you kill a man of blood; if you want ransom, ask whatever you wish.” He remained as long as God willed him to remain. Then one day the Prophet ﷺ said: “Release Thumāmah.” When they released him, he went out until he came to al-Baqīʿ, performed ablution, and did it well. Then he came forward and gave allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ upon Islam. When evening came, they brought him the food they used to bring, but he ate only a little of it, and the milch-camel, but he drank only a small amount of its milk. The Muslims were amazed at that. The Messenger of God ﷺ said when he heard of it: “Why are you amazed? Is it not a man who ate at the beginning of the day in the bowels of a disbeliever, and ate at the end of the day in the bowels of a Muslim? The disbeliever eats in seven bowels, and the Muslim eats in one bowel.” [His going out to Makkah and his story with Quraysh] Ibn Hishām said: It reached me that he went out to perform ʿumrah. When he was in the valley of Makkah, he raised his voice with the talbiyah, and he was the first to enter Makkah reciting the talbiyah. Quraysh seized him and said: “You have preferred others over us.” When they brought him forward to strike his neck, one of them said: “Leave him, for you need al-Yamāmah for your food.” So they released him. The Ḥanafī said about that: “And among us is the one who recited the talbiyah in Makkah openly, in spite of Abū Sufyān, in the sacred months.” I was told that he said to the Messenger of God ﷺ when he became a Muslim: “Your face was the most hateful of faces to me, and it has become the most beloved of faces to me.” He said the same about the religion and the land. Then he went out to perform ʿumrah. When he arrived in Makkah, they said: “Have you apostatized, O Thumāmah?” He said: “No, but I have followed the best religion, the religion of Muḥammad. By God, not a grain from al-Yamāmah will reach you until the Messenger of God ﷺ permits it.” Then he went to al-Yamāmah and prevented them from carrying anything to Makkah. They wrote to the Messenger of God ﷺ: “You command the maintenance of kin ties, but you have severed our kin ties and killed the fathers with the sword and the children with hunger.” So the Messenger of God ﷺ wrote to him to leave them free to carry food.

✧ The Detachment of ʿAlqamah b. Mujazziz [The Reason for Sending ʿAlqamah] The Messenger of God ﷺ sent ʿAlqamah b. Mujazziz. When Waqqāṣ b. Mujazziz al-Mudlijī was killed on the day of Dhū Qarad, ʿAlqamah b. Mujazziz asked the Messenger of God ﷺ to send him in pursuit of the people, so that he might attain his revenge upon them. [The Jest of Ibn Ḥudhāfah with His Army] ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Muḥammad mentioned, from Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAlqamah, from ʿAmr b. al-Ḥakam b. Thawbān, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ sent ʿAlqamah b. Mujazziz—Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī said: and I was among them—until when we reached the head of our expedition or were on part of the road, he gave leave to a group of the army, and appointed over them ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥudhāfah al-Sahmī, who was one of the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and in whom there was jesting. When he was on part of the road, he kindled a fire, then said to the people: Do I not have from you hearing and obedience? They said: Yes. He said: Is whatever I command you to do not to be done by you? They said: Yes. He said: I adjure you by my right and your obedience to me that you leap into this fire. He said: Some of the people arose, girding themselves, until he thought that they were about to leap into it. Then he said to them: Sit down, for I was only jesting with you. That was mentioned to the Messenger of God ﷺ after they had come to him, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said: Whoever among them commands you to disobedience, do not obey him. Muḥammad b. Ṭalḥah mentioned that ʿAlqamah b. Mujazziz returned, he and his companions, and did not meet any enemy force.

Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿAmr al-Madanī said: The Messenger of God ﷺ sent ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib to Yemen, and he sent Khālid b. al-Walīd in another army, and he said: If you two meet, then the commander is ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib.
