Translation

✧ The dispatch of ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī to fight Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb and what he did on his way [His arrival in Makkah and the people's recognition of him] Ibn Hishām said: Among the expeditions and raiding parties of the Messenger of God ﷺ which Ibn Isḥāq did not mention is the dispatch of ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī. The Messenger of God ﷺ sent him, according to what was told to me by one of the people of knowledge whom I trust, after the killing of Khubayb b. ʿAdī and his companions, to Makkah, and ordered him to kill Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb. He sent with him Jabbār b. Ṣakhr al-Anṣārī. They set out until they reached Makkah and tethered their two camels in a ravine of the ravines of Yaʾjaj. Then they entered Makkah at night. Jabbār said to ʿAmr: "Would that we circumambulated the House and prayed two rakʿahs?" ʿAmr said: "The people, when they have eaten their evening meal, sit in their courtyards." He said: "Not at all, God willing." ʿAmr said: So we circumambulated the House and prayed, then we went out seeking Abū Sufyān. By God, while we were walking in Makkah, a man of the people of Makkah looked at me and recognized me. He said: "ʿAmr b. Umayyah! By God, he has not come here except for evil." I said to my companion: "Flee!" We went out running until we ascended a mountain, and they came out in pursuit of us. When we had climbed the mountain, they despaired of us and turned back. We entered a cave in the mountain and spent the night in it, having taken stones and piled them up as a barrier before us. When morning came, a man of Quraysh came early leading a horse of his and letting it graze freely. He came upon us while we were in the cave. I said: "If he sees us, he will cry out against us, and we will be seized and killed." [His killing of Abū Sufyān and his flight] He said: I had with me a dagger which I had prepared for Abū Sufyān. I went out to him and struck him on the chest with a blow, and he cried out a cry that the people of Makkah heard. I returned and entered my place. The people came running to him while he was at his last breath. They said: "Who struck you?" He said: "ʿAmr b. Umayyah." Death overcame him, and he died on the spot, and he did not point out our location. They carried him away. When evening came, I said to my companion: "Flee!" We left Makkah at night, heading for Madinah. We passed by the guards while they were guarding the corpse of Khubayb b. ʿAdī. One of them said: "By God, I have never seen a night in which anything more resembles the gait of ʿAmr b. Umayyah; were it not that he is in Madinah, I would say it is ʿAmr b. Umayyah." He said: When he came alongside the wooden stake, he rushed upon it, took it, and carried it off. They both went out at a run, and they went out after him until he came to a bank at the bottom of the watercourse of Yaʾjaj. He threw the stake into the bank, and God hid it from them, so they could not find it. He said: I said to my companion: "Flee, flee, until you reach your camel and mount it, for I will keep the people occupied away from you." The Anṣārī had no skill in running. [His killing of a Bakrī in a cave] He said: I went on until I came out at Ḍajnān, then I took shelter in a mountain and entered a cave. While I was in it, an old one-eyed man of the Banū al-Dīl entered upon me with a small flock of sheep of his. He said: "Who is the man?" I said: "From the Banū Bakr. And who are you?" He said: "From the Banū Bakr." I said: "Welcome." He lay down, then raised his voice in song and said: "I am not a Muslim as long as I live, nor am I close to the religion of the Muslims." I said to myself: You will learn. I gave him respite until he fell asleep. Then I took my bow and placed its tip in his sound eye, then I leaned upon it until it reached the bone. Then I went out fleeing until I came to al-ʿArj, then I took the road of Rakūbah until I descended into al-Naqīʿ. There were two men of Quraysh, of the polytheists, whom Quraysh had sent as spies to Madinah to observe and seek information. I said: "Surrender yourselves as captives." They refused. I shot one of them with an arrow and killed him, and the other surrendered as a captive. I bound him with a rope and brought him to Madinah.
