The expedition of Zayd b. Ḥārithah to Judhām
Translation
✧ He said Ibn Isḥāq in his account: and a man from Banū al-Khaṣīb. When Banū al-Ḍubayb and the army at Fayfāʾ Madān heard of that, a group of them mounted, and among those who mounted with them was Ḥassān b. Millah, on a horse belonging to Suwayd b. Zayd called al-ʿAjājah, and Unayf b. Millah on a horse belonging to Millah called Righāl, and Abū Zayd b. ʿAmr on a horse called Shamir. They set off until when they drew near the army, Abū Zayd and Ḥassān said to Unayf b. Millah: Hold back from us and turn away, for we fear your tongue. So he stopped behind them, but they had not gone far from him when his horse began to paw the ground with its forelegs and prance. He said: I am more protective of the two men than you are of the two horses. So he gave it rein until he caught up with them. They said to him: Since you have done what you have done, hold your tongue from us, and do not bring us misfortune today. So they agreed among themselves that none of them would speak except Ḥassān b. Millah. There had been a word among them in the Jāhiliyyah which some of them knew from others: when one of them wanted to strike with his sword, he said: Būrā or Thūrā. When they came out before the army, the people came rushing toward them. Ḥassān said to them: We are Muslims. The first to meet them was a man on a black horse, who came driving them along. Unayf said: Būrā. Ḥassān said: Gently! When they stopped before Zayd b. Ḥārithah, Ḥassān said: We are Muslims. Zayd said to him: Then recite the Mother of the Book. Ḥassān recited it. Zayd b. Ḥārithah said: Call out in the army that God has forbidden us the gap in the people's ranks from which they came, except for one who betrays.
