✧ The beginning of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ complaint [the onset of the complaint] Ibn Isḥāq said: While the people were upon that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was begun with his complaint in which Allah took him, toward what He intended for him of His honor and His mercy, in nights remaining from Ṣafar, or at the beginning of the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal. The first that he was begun with of that, as was mentioned to me, was that he went out to Baqīʿ al-Gharqad in the depths of the night and sought forgiveness for them, then returned to his family. When morning came, he was begun with his pain from that day of his. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar narrated to me, from ʿUbayd b. Jubayr, client of al-Ḥakam b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ, from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, from Abū Muwayhibah, client of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me in the depths of the night and said, “O Abū Muwayhibah, I have been commanded to seek forgiveness for the people of this Baqīʿ, so come with me.” So I went with him. When he stood among them, he said, “Peace be upon you, O people of the graves. May you enjoy what you have come to be in, compared to what the people have come to be in. Tribulations have come like patches of dark night, the last of them following the first; the latter is worse than the former.” Then he turned to me and said, “O Abū Muwayhibah, I have been given the keys to the treasures of this world and eternal life therein, then Paradise. I was given the choice between that and the meeting with my Lord and Paradise.” He said: I said, “May my father and mother be your ransom, take the keys to the treasures of this world and eternal life therein, then Paradise?” He said, “No, by Allah, O Abū Muwayhibah, I have chosen the meeting with my Lord and Paradise.” Then he sought forgiveness for the people of al-Baqīʿ, then he departed. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began his complaint in which Allah took him.

✧ [His being nursed in ʿĀʾishah's house] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah narrated to me, from Muḥammad b. Muslim al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUtbah b. Masʿūd, from ʿĀʾishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from al-Baqīʿ and found me suffering from a headache, and I was saying, "Oh my head!" He said, "Rather I, by Allah, O ʿĀʾishah, oh my head!" She said: Then he said, "What would it harm you if you died before me, and I stood over you, shrouded you, prayed over you, and buried you?" She said: I said, "By Allah, it is as if I can see you—if you were to do that—you would return to my house and consummate a marriage there with one of your wives." She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled, and his illness increased while he was going around to his wives, until it became severe, and he was in the house of Maymūnah. He summoned his wives and asked their permission to be nursed in my house, and they gave him permission.
