The expedition of Zayd b. Ḥārithah to Judhām

✧ [Their arrival to the Messenger and the poetry of Abu Jiʿāl] Ibn Isḥāq said: And when the sister of Ḥassān b. Millah, who was the wife of Abu Wabr b. ʿAdī b. Umayyah b. al-Ḍubayb, was among the captives, Zayd said to him: “Take her.” She seized his flanks and said, Umm al-Fizr al-Ḍulaʿiyyah: “Will you take away your daughters and leave your mothers?” One of the Banū al-Khaṣīb said: “They are the Banū al-Ḍubayb, and the magic of their tongues lasts the whole day.” Some of the army heard her and informed Zayd b. Ḥārithah of it, so he ordered that the sister of Ḥassān be released, and her hands were untied from his flanks. He said to her: “Sit with the daughters of your paternal uncle until God decides concerning them as He wills.” Then they returned, and he forbade the army from descending into their valley from which they had come. They spent the evening among their families, and they had milked at night a herd belonging to Suwayd b. Zayd. When they had drunk their evening milk, they mounted and rode to Rifāʿah b. Zayd. Among those who rode to Rifāʿah b. Zayd that night were Abu Zayd b. ʿAmr, Abu Shimās b. ʿAmr, Suwayd b. Zayd, Baʿjah b. Zayd, Bardhaʿ b. Zayd, Thaʿlabah b. Zayd, Mukharrabah b. ʿAdī, Unayf b. Millah, and Ḥassān b. Millah, until they came to Rifāʿah b. Zayd at Kurāʿ Ribah, on the edge of the ḥarrah, by a well there in the Ḥarrat Laylā. Ḥassān b. Millah said to him: “You sit milking goats while the women of Judhām are captives, deceived by your letter which I brought.” So Rifāʿah b. Zayd called for a camel of his and began fastening his saddle upon it, saying: “Are you alive, or do you call a living one?” Then he departed in the morning, and with him were they, with Umayyah b. Ḍafārah, the brother of the slain al-Khaṣībī, setting out early from the edge of the ḥarrah. They journeyed toward the interior of Madinah for three nights. When they entered Madinah and reached the mosque, a man among the people looked at them and said: “Do not make your camels kneel, lest their forelegs be cut.” So they dismounted while the camels were still standing. When they entered upon the Messenger of God ﷺ and he saw them, he gestured to them with his hand: “Come up from behind the people.” When Rifāʿah b. Zayd began to speak, a man among the people stood up and said: “O Messenger of God, these are a people of sorcerers,” repeating it twice. Rifāʿah b. Zayd said: “May God have mercy on him who does not mention us on this day of ours except with good.” Then Rifāʿah b. Zayd handed his letter to the Messenger of God ﷺ, the one he had written for him, and said: “Here you are, O Messenger of God: old is his letter, recent is his treachery.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Read it, O boy, and proclaim it.” When he read his letter, he questioned him, and they told him the news. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “What shall I do about the slain?” three times. Rifāʿah said: “You, O Messenger of God, know best. We do not forbid you what is lawful, nor do we make lawful for you what is forbidden.” Abu Zayd b. ʿAmr said: “Release for us, O Messenger of God, those who are alive, and whoever has been killed is beneath these feet of mine.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: “Abu Zayd has spoken truly. Ride with them, O ʿAlī.” ʿAlī ؓ said to him: “O Messenger of God, Zayd will not obey me.” He said: “Then take this sword of mine,” and he gave him his sword. ʿAlī said: “O Messenger of God, I have no riding camel to mount.” So they mounted him on a camel belonging to Thaʿlabah b. ʿAmr, called Mikḥāl. They departed, and there was a messenger of Zayd b. Ḥārithah on a she-camel among the camels of Abu Wabr, called al-Shimr. They made him dismount from it. He said: “O ʿAlī, what is my affair?” He said: “What is theirs? They recognized him and seized him.” Then they went on and met the army at Fayfāʾ al-Faḥlatayn. They took what was in their hands, until they were pulling away the woman's saddle cushion from beneath the saddle. Abu Jiʿāl said when they had finished their affair: A reproaching woman, yet she did not reproach with wisdom; Were it not for us, the blaze would have been kindled with her. She defended her two daughters among the captives, Yet no easy release was hoped for her. Had she been left to ʿŪṣ and Aws, Matters of release would have confounded her. Had she witnessed our mounts in Egypt, Fearing that the journey would be hastened with her, We would have brought water to Yathrib out of protection For a home — indeed, it is a near and pressing need — With every tried warrior, like the lion, sturdy, Upon the frames of a swift, enduring she-camel. May every army at Yathrib be ransom for Abu Sulaymā When the chests clashed together, On the morning when you see the tried one humbled, Apart from the people, his head spinning around. Ibn Hishām said: His saying “no easy release was hoped for her” and his saying “matters of release” are from other than Ibn Isḥāq. The expedition is complete, and we return to the detailed mention of the raiding parties and expeditions. Ibn Isḥāq said: And the expedition of Zayd b. Ḥārithah also to al-Ṭaraf from the direction of Nakhl, on the road to Iraq.
