    سِرْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ فِي سَفَرٍ، فَلَمَّا غَرَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ: " انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا " قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، لَوْ أَمْسَيْتَ، قَالَ: " انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا " قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّ عَلَيْكَ نَهَارًا، قَالَ: " انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا " فَنَزَلَ فَجَدَحَ فَشَرِبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ اللَّيْلَ قَدْ أَقْبَلَ مِنْ هَاهُنَا فَقَدْ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ.

    ✧ We traveled with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was fasting on a journey. When the sun set, he said to a man: “Dismount and mix barley drink for us.” The man said: O Messenger of Allah, if you would wait until evening. He said: “Dismount and mix for us.” The man said: O Messenger of Allah, it is still daytime for you. He said: “Dismount and mix for us.” So he dismounted and mixed, and the Messenger of Allah drank. Then he said: “When you see the night advancing from here, the fasting person has broken his fast.”

    أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ الْقَطَّانُ، عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِنَحْوِهِ. وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لَا نَعْلَمُ رَوَاهُ عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ إِلَّا عِمْرَانُ، فَأَدْخَلَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِلَالٍ، بَيْنَ عَمَّارٍ، وَبَيْنَ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ حُسَيْنَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ، وَلَا نَعْلَمُ مَنْ حُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ هَذَا ؟

    ✧ Imran al-Qattan reported to us, from al-Husayn b. Abdullah, from al-Shaybani, from Ibn Abi Awfa, from the Prophet ﷺ, with something similar. And this hadith we do not know anyone to have narrated from al-Shaybani except Imran, and Muhammad b. Bilal inserted Husayn b. Abdullah between Ammar and al-Shaybani, and we do not know who this Husayn b. Abdullah is?

    ✧ That the Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate against the confederates, saying: "O God, Revealer of the Book, Swift in reckoning, defeat the confederates and shake them."

    أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ اعْتَمَرَ فَطَافَ بِالْبَيْتِ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ يَطُوفُ بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ، فَجَعَلْنَا نَسْتُرُهُ لَا يُصِيبُهُ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ، أَوْ يَرْمِيهِ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ بِشَيْءٍ

    ✧ That the Prophet ﷺ performed Umrah and circumambulated the House, then went out to perform Sa'i between al-Safa and al-Marwah. We screened him so that no one from the people of Makkah could strike him, or any of them could throw something at him.

    عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى، قَالَ: شَهِدْتُهُ وَكَبَّرَ عَلَى جِنَازَةٍ أَرْبَعًا، ثُمَّ قَامَ سَاعَةً يَعْنِي يَدْعُو، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " كُنْتُمْ تَرَوْنَ أَنِّي كُنْتُ مُكَبِّرًا خَمْسًا " قَالُوا: لَا، قَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يُكَبِّرُ أَرْبَعًا.

    ✧ From Abdullah b. Abi Awfa, who said: I witnessed him, and he said the takbir over a funeral bier four times, then stood for a while, meaning supplicating, then said: "Did you think that I would say the takbir five times?" They said: No. He said: "The Messenger of God ﷺ used to say the takbir four times."

    خَرَجَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ أَجْمَعَ مَا كَانُوا، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أُرِيتُ اللَّيْلَةَ مَنَازِلَكُمْ فِي الْجَنَّةِ وَقُرْبَ مَنَازِلِكُمْ ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ: " يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ، إِنِّي لَأَعْرِفُ رَجُلًا أَعْرِفُ اسْمَهُ وَاسْمَ أَبِيهِ وَأُمِّهِ لَا يَأْتِي بَابًا مِنْ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ إِلَّا يُقَالُ لَهُ مَرْحَبًا مَرْحَبًا " فَقَالَ لَهُ سَلْمَانُ: إِنَّ هَذَا لَمُرْتَفِعٌ شَأْنُهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: " فَهُوَ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ " ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى عُمَرَ فَقَالَ: " يَا عُمَرُ، لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ فِيَ الْجَنَّةِ قَصْرًا مِنْ دُرَّةٍ بَيْضَاءَ، شَرَفُهُ لُؤْلُؤٌ أَبْيَضُ، مَشَيَّدٌ بِالْيَاقُوتِ، فَقُلْتُ: لِمَنْ هَذَا ؟ فَقِيلَ: لِفَتًى مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ، فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ لِي فَذَهَبْتُ لِأَدْخُلَهُ، فَقَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، هَذَا لِعُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فَمَا مَنَعَنِي مِنْ دُخُولِهِ إِلَّا غَيْرَتُكَ يَا أَبَا حَفْصٍ " فَبَكَى عُمَرُ وَقَالَ: بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي، أَعَلَيْكَ أَغَارُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ فَقَالَ: " يَا عُثْمَانُ، إِنَّ لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ رَفِيقًا فِي الْجَنَّةِ، وَأَنْتَ رَفِيقِي فِي الْجَنَّةِ " ثُمَّ أَخَذَ بِيَدِ عَلِيٍّ، فَقَالَ: " يَا عَلِيُّ، أَمَا تَرْضَى أَنْ يَكُونَ مَنْزِلُكَ فِي الْجَنَّةِ مُقَابِلَ مَنْزِلِي ؟ قَالَ: بَلَى بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: " فَإِنَّ مَنْزِلَكَ فِي الْجَنَّةِ مُقَابِلَ مَنْزِلِي " ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى طَلْحَةَ وَالزُّبَيْرِ، فَقَالَ: " يَا طَلْحَةُ وَيَا زُبَيْرُ، إِنَّ لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ حَوَارِيًّا وَأَنْتُمَا حَوَارِيَّايَ " ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ، فَقَالَ: " لَقَدْ بَطَّأَ بِكَ عَنِّي مِنْ بَيْنِ أَصْحَابِي، حَتَّى خَشِيتُ أَنْ تَكُونَ قَدْ هَلَكْتَ وَغَرِقْتَ غَرَقًا شَدِيدًا، فَقُلْتُ: مَا بَطَّأَ بِكَ ؟ " فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، مِنْ كَثْرَةِ مَالِي مَا زِلْتُ مَوْقُوفًا مُحَاسَبًا، أُسْأَلُ عَنْ مَالِي مِنْ أَيْنَ اكْتَسَبْتُهُ ؟ وَفِيمَ أَنْفَقْتُهُ ؟ فَبَكَى عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ وَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، هَذِهِ مِائَةُ رَاحِلَةٍ جَاءَتْنِي اللَّيْلَةَ مِنْ تُجَّارِ مِصْرَ، فَأَنَا أُشْهِدُكَ أَنَّهَا عَلَى أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ وَأَبْنَائِهِمْ، لَعَلَّ اللهَ يُخَفِّفُ عَنِّي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ came out to all of his companions and said: "I was shown tonight your dwellings in Paradise and the nearness of your dwellings. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ turned to Abu Bakr and said: 'O Abu Bakr, I know a man whose name, his father's name, and his mother's name I know; he will not come to any gate of the gates of Paradise except that it will be said to him: Welcome, welcome.' Salman said to him: 'This man's status is indeed exalted, O Messenger of God.' He said: 'He is Abu Bakr b. Abi Quhafah.' Then he turned to Umar and said: 'O Umar, I saw in Paradise a palace of white pearl, its balconies of white pearl, built with rubies. I said: For whom is this? It was said: For a young man of Quraysh. I thought it was for me, so I went to enter it, but it was said: O Muhammad, this is for Umar b. al-Khattab. Nothing prevented me from entering it except your jealousy, O Abu Hafs.' Umar wept and said: 'May my father and mother be your ransom, would I be jealous of you, O Messenger of God?' Then he turned to Uthman b. Affan and said: 'O Uthman, every Prophet has a companion in Paradise, and you are my companion in Paradise.' Then he took Ali by the hand and said: 'O Ali, would it not please you that your dwelling in Paradise is opposite my dwelling?' He said: 'Yes, may my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of God.' He said: 'Indeed, your dwelling in Paradise is opposite my dwelling.' Then he turned to Talhah and al-Zubayr and said: 'O Talhah and O Zubayr, every Prophet has disciples, and you two are my disciples.' Then he turned to Abd al-Rahman b. Awf and said: 'You were delayed from me among my companions until I feared that you had perished and drowned in a severe drowning, so I said: What delayed you?' He said: 'O Messenger of God, because of the abundance of my wealth, I was kept standing for reckoning, being asked about my wealth: from where did I earn it? And on what did I spend it?' Abd al-Rahman wept and said: 'O Messenger of God, these are one hundred camels that came to me tonight from the merchants of Egypt; I call upon you to witness that they are for the people of Madinah and their children, so that perhaps God may lighten for me on that Day.'"

    جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَشَكَى إِلَيْهِ نِسْيَانَ الْقُرْآنِ، فَقَالَ: عَلِّمْنِي شَيْئًا يُجْزِئُنِي، فَقَالَ: قُلْ بِسْمِ اللهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلهِ، وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَاللهُ أَكْبَرُ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ قَالَ: فَعَدَّهُنَّ فِي يَدِهِ، ثُمَّ ضَمَّ أَصَابِعَهُ خَمْسًا، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، هَذَا لِرَبِّي فَمَا لِي ؟ قَالَ: " قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي، وَارْحَمْنِي، وَعَافِنِي، وَارْزُقْنِي، وَاهْدِنِي " قَالَ: فَعَدَّهُنَّ فِي يَدِهِ خَمْسًا وَضَمَّ أَصَابِعَهُ الْأُخْرَى، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " أَمَّا هَذَا فَقَدْ مَلَأَ يَدَيْهِ خَيْرًا ".

    ✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and complained to him about forgetting the Qur’an. He said: “Teach me something that will suffice me.” He said: “Say: Bismillāh, wal-ḥamdu lillāh, wa lā ilāha illā Allāh, wa Allāhu akbar, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh.” He said: So he counted them on his hand, then closed five fingers and said: “O Messenger of Allah, this is for my Lord, so what is for me?” He said: “Say: Allāhumma ighfir lī, wa-rḥamnī, wa-‘āfinī, wa-rzuqnī, wa-hdinī.” He said: So he counted them on his hand, five, and closed his other fingers. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: “As for this, he has filled his hands with good.”

    أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَقَامَ سِلْعَةً لَهُ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ، فَحَلَفَ بِاللهِ كَاذِبًا لَقَدْ أَعْطَى بِهَا كَذَا، فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلا.

    ✧ A man displayed his merchandise after ‘Asr and swore by Allah falsely, saying he had been offered such-and-such a price for it. Then this verse was revealed: “Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price” (Qur’an 3:77).

    ✧ When charity was brought to the Prophet ﷺ, he would say: “O Allah, bless the family of so-and-so.” My father brought him his charity, and he said: “O Allah, bless the family of Abū Awfā.”

    لَا يَزْنِي الزَّانِي حِينَ يَزْنِي وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ، وَلَا يَسْرِقُ حِينَ يَسْرِقُ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ، وَلَا يَنْتَهِبُ نُهْبَةً ذَاتَ سَرَفٍ أَوْ قَالَ: ذَاتَ شَرَفٍ يَنْتَهِبُهَا وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ ".

    ✧ The adulterer does not commit adultery while he is a believer, nor does the thief steal while he is a believer, nor does one plunder a plunder of high value—or he said: of high honor—while he is a believer.

    تُوُفِّيَتِ ابْنَةٌ لَهُ، فَتَبِعَهَا عَلَى بَغْلَةٍ يَسِيرُ خَلْفَ الْجِنَازَةِ، وَنِسَاءٌ يَرْثِينَهَا، فَقَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي أَوْفَى: " لَا تَرْثِينَ، فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَهَى عَنِ الْمَرَاثِي، وَلَكِنْ لِتَفِيضَ إِحْدَاكُنَّ مِنْ عَبْرَتِهَا مَا شَاءَتْ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى عَلَيْهَا فَكَبَّرَ أَرْبَعًا، ثُمَّ قَامَ بَعْدَ الرَّابِعَةِ قَدْرَ مَا بَيْنَ التَّكْبِيرَتَيْنِ يَسْتَغْفِرُ لَهَا وَيَدْعُو، وَقَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَكَذَا يَصْنَعُ، قَالَ: وَنَادَى مُنَادِي رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ أَكْفِئُوا الْقُدُورَ فَأَكْفَأْنَاهَا

    ✧ A daughter of his died, and he followed her on a mule, walking behind the funeral procession, while women were lamenting her. Ibn Abī Awfā said: “Do not lament, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade elegies. But let any of you shed tears as she wishes.” Then he prayed over her, saying four takbīrs. After the fourth he stood for the length between two takbīrs, seeking forgiveness for her and supplicating. He said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do this.” He said: And the caller of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ announced: “Overturn the cooking pots,” so we overturned them.

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on one of the days when he met [the enemy]. He stood among the people and delivered a sermon, saying: "Do not wish to meet the enemy, and ask Allah for well-being. But if you meet them, be patient, and know that Paradise is under the shade of the swords." Then he supplicated, saying: "O Allah, Sender down of the Book, Vanquisher of the confederates, defeat them and grant us victory over them."

    اشْتَكَى عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ خَالِدَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ، إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: " لِمَ تُؤْذِي رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ [ بَدْرٍ ]، وَلَوْ أَنْفَقْتَ مِثْلَ أُحُدٍ ذَهَبًا لَمْ تَبْلُغْ عَمَلَهُ ؟ قَالَ: يَقَعُونَ فِيَّ فَمَا أَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِمْ، قَالَ: لَا تُؤْذُوا خَالِدًا فَإِنَّهُ سَيْفٌ مِنْ سُيُوفِ اللهِ، صَبَّهُ اللهُ عَلَى الْكُفَّارِ.

    ✧ Abd al-Rahman b. Awf complained about Khalid b. al-Walid to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he said: "Why do you harm a man from the companions of [Badr]? Even if you spent the like of Uhud in gold, you would not reach his deed." He said: "They revile me, but I do not respond to them." He said: "Do not harm Khalid, for he is a sword among the swords of Allah that Allah has unleashed upon the disbelievers."

    ✧ I entered upon Ibn Abi Awfa and saw him pray the morning prayer as two rak'ahs. His wife said, 'You only prayed two rak'ahs.' He said, 'Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two rak'ahs when he was given glad tidings of the victory, and when he was given glad tidings of the head of Abu Jahl.'

    ✧ I prayed with him over a funeral, and he said the takbir over it four times, then he paused for a little while, until we thought he would say a fifth takbir. Then he said, 'Thus I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do.' Then he heard women wailing, so he said, 'We have been forbidden from lamentation,' and he said to his servant, 'Where am I?' He replied, 'In front of the funeral.' He said, 'Put me behind the funeral.'

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray witr with three rak'ahs. In them he would recite in the first: 'Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High'; in the second: 'Say, O disbelievers'; and in the third: 'Say, He is Allah, the One.' When he said the salam, he would say, 'Glory be to the King, the Holy,' and he would prolong his voice with it.

    مَنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ حَاجَةٌ إِلَى اللهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى أَوْ إِلَى أَحَدٍ، فَلْيَقُلْ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ الْحَلِيمُ الْكَرِيمُ، سُبْحَانَ اللهِ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، الْحَمْدُ لِلهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ، أَسْأَلُكَ مُوجِبَاتِ رَحْمَتِكَ وَعَزَائِمَ مَغْفِرَتِكَ وَالْغَنِيمَةَ مِنْ كُلِّ بِرٍّ، وَالسَّلَامَةَ مِنْ كُلِّ ذَنْبٍ وَمِنْ كُلِّ إِثْمٍ، لَا تَدَعْ لِي ذَنْبًا إِلَّا غَفَرْتَهُ، وَلَا هَمًّا إِلَّا فَرَّجْتَهُ، وَلَا حَاجَةً هِيَ لَكَ رِضًا إِلَّا قَضَيْتَهَا يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ ".

    ✧ Whoever has a need from Allah, Blessed and Exalted, or from any person, let him say: 'There is no god but Allah, the Forbearing, the Generous. Glory be to Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. I ask You for the means of Your mercy, the certainties of Your forgiveness, and the spoils of every righteousness, and safety from every sin and every offense. Do not leave for me any sin but that You forgive it, nor any worry but that You relieve it, nor any need that is pleasing to You but that You fulfill it, O Most Merciful of the merciful.'

    بَيْنَا نَحْنُ قُعُودٌ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، أَتَاهُ غُلَامٌ فَقَالَ: بِأَبِي أَنْتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، غُلَامٌ يَتِيمٌ وَأُخْتٌ لَهُ يَتِيمَةٌ وَأُمٌّ لَهُ أَرْمَلَةٌ، أَطْعِمْنَا أَعْطَاكَ اللهُ مِمَّا عِنْدَهُ حَتَّى تَرْضَى، قَالَ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " مَا أَحْسَنَ مَا قُلْتَ يَا غُلَامُ، انْطَلِقْ إِلَى أَهْلِنَا فَأْتِنَا بِمَا وَجَدْتَ عِنْدَهُمْ مِنْ طَعَامٍ " فَأَتَى بِلَالٌ بِوَاحِدَةٍ وَعِشْرِينَ تَمْرَةً، فَوَضَعَهَا فِي كَفِّ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَأَشَارَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِكَفَّيْهِ إِلَى فِيهِ فِيهِنَّ التَّمْرُ، وَنَحْنُ نَرَى أَنَّهُ يَدْعُو لِلتَّمْرِ بِالْبَرَكَةِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " يَا غُلَامُ سَبْعًا لَكَ، وَسَبْعًا لِأُمِّكَ وَسَبْعًا لِأُخْتِكَ، فَتَعَشَّى بِتَمْرَةٍ وَتَغَدَّى بِأُخْرَى " فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ الْغُلَامُ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَامَ إِلَيْهِ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ، فَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: جَبَرَ اللهُ يُتْمَكَ وَجَعَلَكَ خَلَفًا مِنْ أَبِيكَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " قَدْ رَأَيْتَ مَا صَنَعْتُ بِالْغُلَامِ يَا مُعَاذُ قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، رَحْمَةً لِلْغُلَامِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ: وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ، لَا يَلِي أَحَدٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ يَتِيمًا فَيُحْسِنُ وِلَايَتَهُ، إِلَّا جَعَلَ اللهُ لَهُ بِكُلِّ شَعَرَةٍ دَرَجَةً، وَأَعْطَاهُ بِكُلِّ شَعَرَةٍ حَسَنَةً، وَكَفَّرَ عَنْهُ بِكُلِّ شَعَرَةٍ سَيِّئَةً ".

    ✧ While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a young boy came to him and said, 'May my father be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah. I am an orphan boy, and I have an orphan sister and a widowed mother. Feed us; may Allah give you from what He has until you are pleased.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'How well you have spoken, O boy. Go to our family and bring us whatever food you find with them.' Bilal brought twenty-one dates and placed them in the palm of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured with his palms toward his mouth over the dates, and we thought he was supplicating for blessing upon the dates. Then he said, 'O boy, seven for you, seven for your mother, and seven for your sister. Dine with one date and lunch with another.' When the boy left the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Mu'adh b. Jabal stood up to him, placed his hand on his head, and said, 'May Allah mend your orphanhood and make you a successor of your father.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'You saw what I did with the boy, O Mu'adh.' He replied, 'O Messenger of Allah, mercy for the boy.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, 'By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, no one among the Muslims takes charge of an orphan and treats him well, except that Allah grants him for every hair a degree, gives him for every hair a good deed, and expiates from him for every hair an evil deed.'

    " كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُصَلِّي بِنَا الظُّهْرَ حِينَ تَزُولُ الشَّمْسُ، وَلَوْ جُعِلَتْ حَبَّةٌ فِي الرَّمْضَاءِ لَأَنْضَجَتْهُ، ثُمَّ يُطِيلُ الرَّكْعَةَ الْأُولَى فَلَا يَزَالُ قَائِمًا يَقْرَأُ مَا سَمِعَ خَفْقَ نِعَالِ الْقَوْمِ، ثُمَّ يَرْكَعُ، ثُمَّ يَقُومُ فِي الثَّانِيَةِ فَيَرْكَعُ رَكْعَةً هِيَ أَقْصَرُ مِنَ الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُولَى، ثُمَّ يَجْعَلُ الرَّكْعَةَ الثَّالِثَةَ أَقْصَرَ مِنَ الثَّانِيَةِ، وَالرَّابِعَةَ أَقْصَرَ مِنَ الثَّالِثَةِ، ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي الْعَصْرَ وَالشَّمْسُ بَيْضَاءَ نَقِيَّةً قَدْرَ مَا يَسِيرُ السَّائِرُ فَرْسَخَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةً، وَيُطِيلُ الرَّكْعَةَ الْأُولَى مِنَ الْعَصْرِ، وَيَجْعَلُ الثَّانِيَةَ أَقْصَرَ مِنَ الْأُولَى، وَيُصَلِّي الْمَغْرِبَ حِينَ يَقُولُ الْقَائِلُ: غَرَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ أَمْ لَا ؟ وَيُطِيلُ الرَّكْعَةَ الْأُولَى مِنَ الْمَغْرِبِ، وَيَجْعَلُ الرَّكْعَةَ الثَّانِيَةَ أَقْصَرَ مِنَ الْأُولَى، وَالثَّالِثَةَ أَقْصَرَ مِنَ الثَّانِيَةِ، وَيُؤَخِّرُ صَلَاةَ الْعِشَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ شَيْئًا ".

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ used to lead us in the noon prayer when the sun had passed its zenith, and if a seed were placed on the hot ground it would have been cooked. Then he would lengthen the first rak'ah, remaining standing and reciting until we heard the sound of the people's sandals [shifting]. Then he would bow, then stand for the second rak'ah, which was shorter than the first. Then he would make the third rak'ah shorter than the second, and the fourth shorter than the third. Then he would pray the afternoon prayer while the sun was still white and clear, enough time for a traveler to travel two or three farsakhs. He would lengthen the first rak'ah of the afternoon prayer and make the second shorter than the first. He would pray the sunset prayer when a person would say, 'Has the sun set or not?' He would lengthen the first rak'ah of the sunset prayer and make the second shorter than the first, and the third shorter than the second. And he would delay the last evening prayer a little.

    بَعَثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى، فَقَدِمْتُ وَمَعِي نَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقُلْتُ: مَا تَأْمُرُونَ بِهِ النَّاسَ ؟ فَقَالَ: أَوْصَانِي أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ، إِنْ أَنَا أَدْرَكْتُ شَيْئًا مِنْ هَذِهِ مِنْ أَنْ أَعْمِدَ إِلَى أَحَدٍ، فَأَكْسِرَ سَيْفِي وَأَقْعُدَ فِي بَيْتِي، فَإِنْ دُخِلَ عَلَيَّ فِي بَيْتِي، قَالَ: " اقْعُدْ فِي مَخْدَعِكَ، فَإِنْ دُخِلَ عَلَيْكَ فَاجْثُو عَلَى رُكْبَتَيْكَ " وَيَقُولُ: " بُؤْ بِإِثْمِي وَإِثْمِكَ فَتَكُونَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّارِ، وَذَلِكَ جَزَاءُ الظَّالِمِينَ " فَقَدْ كَسَرْتُ سَيْفِي فَإِذَا دُخِلَ عَلَيَّ بَيْتِي دَخَلْتُ مَخْدَعِي، فَإِذَا دُخِلَ عَلَيَّ مَخْدَعِي جَثَوْتُ عَلَى رُكْبَتَيَّ، وَقُلْتُ مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ أَقُولَ

    ✧ Yazid b. Mu'awiyah sent me to 'Abdullah b. Abi Awfa. I arrived with some people from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked, 'What do you command the people to do?' He said, 'Abu al-Qasim ﷺ advised me that if I encounter any of this [civil strife], I should go to no one, break my sword, and sit in my house. If someone enters upon me in my house, he said, "Sit in your private chamber. If someone enters upon you there, kneel on your knees." And he said, "Bear your sin and my sin, and you will be among the companions of the Fire, and that is the recompense of the wrongdoers."' So I have broken my sword. If someone enters upon me in my house, I will enter my private chamber. If someone enters upon me in my private chamber, I will kneel on my knees and say what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me to say.
