54. ✧ Abdullah b. Hanzalah b. al-Rahib ᴿᴬ

    " أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْوُضُوءِ لِكُلِّ صَلَاةٍ، فَتَرَكَ ذَلِكَ وَأَمَرَهُمْ بِالسِّوَاكِ لِكُلِّ صَلَاةٍ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command ablution for every prayer, but he left that and commanded them to use the tooth stick for every prayer.

    رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَطُوفُ بِالْبَيْتِ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ، يَسْتَلِمُ الرُّكْنَ بِمِحْجَنِهِ.

    ✧ I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ circumambulating the House on his riding camel, touching the corner with his staff.

    كُنَّا فِي مَنْزِلِ قَيْسِ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ، وَمَعَنَا نَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَقُلْنَا لَهُ: تَقَدَّمْ، فَقَالَ: مَا كُنْتُ لِأَفْعَلَ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ حَنْظَلَةَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: الرَّجُلُ أَحَقُّ بِصَدْرِ فِرَاشِهِ، وَأَحَقُّ بِصَدْرِ دَابَّتِهِ، وَأَحَقُّ أَنْ يَؤُمَّ فِي بَيْتِهِ فَأَمَرَ مَوْلًى لَهُ، فَتَقَدَّمَ فَصَلَّى.

    ✧ We were in the residence of Qays b. Saʿd b. ʿUbādah, and with us were some people from among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ. We said to him, “Step forward,” but he said, “I would not do that.” Then ʿAbdullāh b. Ḥanẓalah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A man is more entitled to the head of his bed, more entitled to the front of his mount, and more entitled to lead the prayer in his own house.” So he ordered a freed slave of his, and he stepped forward and prayed.

    دِرْهَمُ رِبًا يَأْكُلُهُ الرَّجُلُ وَهُوَ يَعْلَمُ أَشَدُّ مِنْ سِتَّةٍ وَثَلَاثِينَ زَنْيَةً.

    ✧ A dirham of ribā that a man consumes while he knows is more severe than thirty-six acts of zinā.

    قُلْتُ لَهُ: أَرَأَيْتَ وُضُوءَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ لِكُلِّ صَلَاةٍ عَمَّنْ أَخَذَهُ ؟ قَالَ: حَدَّثَتْهُ أَسْمَاءُ بِنْتُ زَيْدِ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ حَنْظَلَةَ أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْوُضُوءِ عِنْدَ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ، فَلَمَّا شَقَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ أَمَرَ بِالسِّوَاكِ عِنْدَ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ

    ✧ I said to him, “What do you think about ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar’s ablution for every prayer—from whom did he take it?” He said: Asmāʾ bt. Zayd b. al-Khaṭṭāb narrated to him from ʿAbdullāh b. Ḥanẓalah that he narrated to her that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command ablution at every prayer. When that became difficult for them, he commanded the siwāk at every prayer.
