✧ While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a young boy came to him and said, 'May my father be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah. I am an orphan boy, and I have an orphan sister and a widowed mother. Feed us; may Allah give you from what He has until you are pleased.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'How well you have spoken, O boy. Go to our family and bring us whatever food you find with them.' Bilal brought twenty-one dates and placed them in the palm of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured with his palms toward his mouth over the dates, and we thought he was supplicating for blessing upon the dates. Then he said, 'O boy, seven for you, seven for your mother, and seven for your sister. Dine with one date and lunch with another.' When the boy left the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Mu'adh b. Jabal stood up to him, placed his hand on his head, and said, 'May Allah mend your orphanhood and make you a successor of your father.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'You saw what I did with the boy, O Mu'adh.' He replied, 'O Messenger of Allah, mercy for the boy.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, 'By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, no one among the Muslims takes charge of an orphan and treats him well, except that Allah grants him for every hair a degree, gives him for every hair a good deed, and expiates from him for every hair an evil deed.'
