خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَمْشِي بَيْنَ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، وَبِلَالٍ حَتَّى دَخَلَ الْكَعْبَةَ، وَفِيهَا خَشَبَةٌ مَعْرُوضَةٌ، فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ أُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ سَأَلْتُهُ كَيْفَ صَنَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ فَقَالَ: تَرَكَ مِنَ الْخَشَبَةِ ثُلُثَيْهَا عَنْ يَمِينِهِ، وَصَلَّى فِي الثُّلُثِ الْبَاقِي عَنْ شِمَالِهِ قُلْتُ: " كَمْ صَلَّى ؟ " قَالَ: " لَمْ أَسْأَلْ بِلَالًا
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us walking between Usamah b. Zayd and Bilal until he entered the Ka'bah. Inside it there was a piece of wood placed across. When Usamah b. Zayd came out, I asked him: What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do? He said: He left two-thirds of the wood on his right and prayed in the remaining third on his left. I said: How many (rak'ahs) did he pray? He said: I did not ask Bilal.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ رَكِبَ حِمَارًا عَلَيْهِ إِكَافٌ، وَتَحْتَهُ قَطِيفَةٌ فَدَكِيَّةٌ فَأَرْدَفَنِي وَرَاءَهُ، وَهُوَ يَعُودُ سَعْدَ بْنَ عُبَادَةَ فِي بَنِي الْحَارِثِ بْنِ الْخَزْرَجِ، وَذَلِكَ قَبْلَ وَقْعَةِ بَدْرٍ حَتَّى مَرَّ بِمَجْلِسٍ فِيهِ أَخْلَاطٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَالْمُشْرِكِينَ عَبَدَةِ الْأَوْثَانِ، وَالْيَهُودِ، وَفِيهِمْ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ ابْنِ سَلُولَ، وَفِي الْمَجْلِسِ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ، فَلَمَّا غَشِيَ الْمَجْلِسَ عَجَاجَةُ الدَّابَّةِ خَمَّرَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ أَنْفَهُ بِرِدَائِهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: لَا تُغَبِّرُوا عَلَيْنَا، فَسَلَّمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ، ثُمَّ وَقَفَ فَنَزَلَ، وَدَعَاهُمْ إِلَى اللهِ وَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقُرْآنَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ: أَيُّهَا الْمَرْءُ لَا أَحْسَنَ مِنْ هَذَا إِنْ كَانَ مَا تَقُولُ حَقًّا فَلَا تُؤْذِينَا فِي مَجَالِسِنَا، وَارْجِعْ إِلَى رَحْلِكَ فَمَنْ جَاءَكَ مِنَّا فَاقْصُصْ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ: بَلِ اغْشَنَا فِي مَجَالِسِنَا فَإِنَّا نُحِبُّ ذَلِكَ، فَاسْتَبَّ الْمُسْلِمُونَ وَالْمُشْرِكُونَ، وَالْيَهُودُ، حَتَّى هَمُّوا أَنْ يَتَوَاثَبُوا فَلَمْ يَزَلِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ، يُخَفِّضُهُمْ، ثُمَّ رَكِبَ دَابَّتَهُ حَتَّى دَخَلَ عَلَى سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ، فَقَالَ: أَيْ سَعْدُ، أَلَمْ تَسْمَعْ مَا قَالَ أَبُو حُبَابٍ ؟ يُرِيدُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أُبَيٍّ، قَالَ: كَذَا وَكَذَا " قَالَ: اعْفُ عَنْهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَاصْفَحْ، فَوَاللهِ لَقَدْ أَعْطَاكَ اللهُ الَّذِي أَعْطَاكَ، وَلَقَدِ اصْطَلَحَ أَهْلُ هَذِهِ الْبُحَيْرَةِ أَنْ يُتَوِّجُوهُ، وَيُعَصِّبُوهُ بِالْعِصَابَةِ، فَلَمَّا رَدَّ اللهُ ذَلِكَ بِالْحَقِّ الَّذِي أَعْطَاكَهُ شَرِقَ بِذَلِكَ؛ فَلِذَلِكَ فَعَلَ مَا رَأَيْتَ، فَعَفَا عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ rode a donkey with a packsaddle, and under him was a Fadakiyyah velvet cloth. He seated me behind him. He was going to visit Sa'd b. 'Ubadah in the [neighborhood of] Banu al-Harith b. al-Khazraj, and that was before the Battle of Badr. He passed by a gathering in which there was a mix of Muslims, idol-worshipping polytheists, and Jews, and among them were 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy b. Salul and 'Abd Allah b. Rawahah. When the dust of the animal enveloped the gathering, 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy covered his nose with his cloak, then said: 'Do not raise dust on us.' The Prophet ﷺ greeted, then stopped and dismounted. He called them to God and recited the Qur'an to them. 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy said to him: 'O man, there is nothing better than this if what you say is true. So do not annoy us in our gatherings; return to your camp. Whoever of us comes to you, narrate to him.' 'Abd Allah b. Rawahah said: 'Rather, come to us in our gatherings, for we love that.' Then the Muslims, the polytheists, and the Jews began insulting one another until they were about to attack each other. The Prophet ﷺ kept calming them down. Then he mounted his animal and went to Sa'd b. 'Ubadah. He said: 'O Sa'd, did you not hear what Abu Hubab said?'—meaning 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy—'He said such-and-such.' Sa'd said: 'Pardon him, O Messenger of God, and overlook. For by God, God has given you what He has given you. The people of this lake had agreed to crown him and tie the headband on him, but when God rejected that with the truth that He gave you, he choked on it. That is why he did what you saw.' So the Messenger of God ﷺ pardoned him.

✧ And I heard one of our companions—he is Isma'il b. Ishaq—mention it from Isma'il b. Abi Uways, from his brother, from Sulayman b. Bilal, from Ibn Abi 'Atiq—he is Muhammad b. Abi 'Atiq—from al-Zuhri, from 'Urwa, from Usamah, from the Prophet ﷺ. And we do not know that this speech was reported connected from the Prophet ﷺ except from the hadith of al-Zuhri, from 'Urwa, from Usamah.

✧ 'Abd Allah b. Ubayy said: 'If we return to Madinah, the more mighty will surely expel the more lowly from it.' He said: Then 'Abd Allah b. 'Abd Allah said: 'By God, you will not enter until you say: Muhammad is the mighty one, and you are the lowly one—or: you are the humiliated one.' He said: Then 'Abd Allah b. 'Abd Allah asked permission to kill his father, but he said: 'Let not people say that Muhammad kills his companions.'

✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ became gravely ill, I descended, and the people descended with me. I entered upon the Messenger of God ﷺ while he had been silenced, so he was not speaking. He began raising his hand toward the sky, then placing it upon me, so I knew that he was supplicating for me.

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ clothed him with a Qibtiyyah garment, so he clothed his wife with it. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "What did you do with the Qibtiyyah?" He said: "I clothed the woman with it." He said: "Order her to put an undergarment beneath it so that it does not describe the size of her bones."

طَرَقْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ لِبَعْضِ الْحَاجَةِ فَخَرَجَ إِلَيَّ، وَهُوَ مُشْتَمِلٌ عَلَى شَيْءٍ لَا أَدْرِي مَا هُوَ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغْتُ مِنْ حَاجَتِي، قُلْتُ: مَا هَذَا الَّذِي أَنْتَ مُشْتَمِلٌ عَلَيْهِ ؟ فَإِذَا حَسَنٌ، وَحُسَيْنٌ عَلَى وَرِكَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ تَعْلَمُ أَنِّي أُحِبُّهُمَا فَأَحْبِبْهُمَا ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ
✧ I knocked on the Messenger of God ﷺ's door one night for some need, and he came out to me wrapped in something I did not know what it was. When I finished my need, I said: "What is this that you are wrapped in?" Then behold, Hasan and Husayn were on his hips. He said: "O God, You know that I love them, so love them" three times.

✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "I practice coitus interruptus with my wife." The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: "Why do you do that? Or by what reason?" He said: "I fear for her child or for her children." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "If that were so, it would not have harmed Persia or Rome, or the Romans."

✧ I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and saw sadness upon him. It was said to him, and he said: "Gabriel ﷺ has not come to me for three days, and I see a puppy in the house." He ordered it, and it was taken out, and then Gabriel appeared to him, ﷺ. He said: "Why did you not come to me?" He said: "We do not enter a house in which there is a dog or images."

" أَلَا مُشَمِّرٌ لِلْجَنَّةِ ؟ فَإِنَّ الْجَنَّةَ لَا خَطَرَ لَهَا، هِيَ وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ نُورٌ يَتَلَأْلَأُ، وَرَيْحَانَةٌ تَهْتَزُّ، وَقَصْرٌ مَشِيدٌ، وَنَهَرٌ عَطِرٌ، وَثَمَرَةٌ نَضِجَةٌ، وَزَوْجَةٌ حَسْنَاءُ جَمِيلَةٌ، وَحُلَلٌ كَثِيرَةٌ، فِي مَقَامٍ أَبْدِيٍّ فِي دَارٍ سَلِيمَةٍ، وَفَاكِهَةٍ، وَخُضْرَةٍ، وَجِرَّةٍ، وَنَعْمَةٍ فِي مَحِلَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ، بَهِيَّةٍ " قَالُوا: نَعَمْ، يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، نَحْنُ الْمُشَمِّرُونَ لَهَا، قَالَ: " قُولُوا: إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ " قَالَ الْقَوْمُ: إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ
✧ "Is there any who will hasten to Paradise? For Paradise has no danger. By the Lord of the Kaaba, it is a light that glitters, a fragrant plant that sways, a lofty palace, a river with pleasing scent, ripe fruit, a beautiful and lovely spouse, and many garments, in an eternal abode in a secure home, with fruit and greenery and comfort and blessing in a high and splendid place." They said: "Yes, O Messenger of God, we are those who hasten to it." He said: "Say: If God wills." The people said: "If God wills."

✧ I departed with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and when he reached the mountain pass, he dismounted and urinated. I said: "The prayer!" He said: "The prayer is ahead of you." When we reached Muzdalifah, he called the adhan and the iqamah and prayed Maghrib. Then he did not come to another until he called the iqamah and prayed Isha.

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَجَاءَهُ رَسُولُ إِحْدَى بَنَاتِهِ تَدْعُوهُ وَتَقُولُ: إِنَّ صَبِيًّا لَهَا فِي الْمَوْتِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " ارْجِعْ إِلَيْهَا فَقُلْ لَهَا تَحْتَسِبُهُ فَإِنَّ لِلهِ مَا أَخَذَ وَلَهُ مَا أَعْطَى، وَكُلُّ شَيْءٍ عِنْدَهُ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى " فَأَرْسَلَتْ إِلَيْهِ تُقْسِمُ عَلَيْهِ لَيَأْتِيَنَّهَا فَقَامَ، وَقَامَ مَعَهُ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ، وَسَعْدُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ فَأَتَاهَا فَوَضَعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الصَّبِيَّ فِي حِجْرِهِ وَنَفْسُهُ تَقَعْقَعُ كَأَنَّهَا فِي شَنٍّ فَدَمَعَتْ عَيْنَا رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ سَعْدُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ: مَا هَذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ: رَحْمَةٌ جَعَلَهَا اللهُ فِي قُلُوبِ عِبَادِهِ، وَإِنَّمَا يَرْحَمُ اللهُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الرُّحَمَاءَ
✧ I was with the Messenger of God ﷺ when the messenger of one of his daughters came to him, calling him and saying: "A boy of hers is dying." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Go back to her and tell her to seek reward from God, for to God belongs what He takes and to Him belongs what He gives, and everything with Him is for an appointed term." She sent to him adjuring him to come to her. He stood up, and with him stood Muadh b. Jabal and Sa'd b. Ubadah. He came to her, and the Prophet ﷺ placed the boy in his lap, and his breath was rattling as if in an old waterskin. The eyes of the Messenger of God ﷺ shed tears. Sa'd b. Ubadah said: "What is this, O Messenger of God?" He said: "This is mercy which God has placed in the hearts of His servants, and God shows mercy to those of His servants who are merciful."

✧ I was informed that Jibril ﷺ came to the Prophet ﷺ, and Umm Salama was with him. He began to speak, then he stood up. The Prophet of God ﷺ said to Umm Salama: "Who is this?" or as he said. She said: "This is Dihya." Umm Salama said: "By God, I did not think it was anyone but him until I heard the sermon of the Prophet of God ﷺ informing—I think—about Jibril," or as he said.

✧ We entered upon the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was ill and found him sleeping, having covered his face with a striped Yemeni cloak. He uncovered his face and then said: May God curse the Jews; they forbid the fat of sheep yet sell it and consume its price.

حَمَلْتُ عَلَى رَجُلٍ فَقَطَعْتُ يَدَهُ، فَقَالَ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ. فَأَجَزْتُ عَلَيْهِ، فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: يَا أُسَامَةُ، أَقَتَلْتَهُ، وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ ؟ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّمَا قَالَهَا تَعَوُّذًا بَعْدَمَا قَطَعْتُهُ، قَالَ: فَمَا زَالَ يُرَدِّدُهَا حَتَّى وَدِدْتُ أَنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ أَسْلَمْتُ إِلَّا يَوْمِي.
✧ I attacked a man and cut off his hand, and he said: There is no god but God. I finished him off. That reached the Prophet ﷺ, who said: O Usama, did you kill him while he was saying: There is no god but God? I said: O Messenger of God, he only said it seeking protection after I had cut him. He said: And he kept repeating it until I wished I had not embraced Islam before that day.

بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي جَيْشِ الْحُرَقَاتِ فَلَمَّا هَزَمْنَاهُمُ انْتَدَبْتُ أَنَا وَرَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ لِرَجُلٍ مِنْهُمْ فَقَالَ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، فَكَفَّ عَنْهُ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ وَظَنَنْتُ إِنَّمَا قَالَهَا تَعَوُّذًا فَقَتَلْتُهُ، فَرَفَعَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: يَا أُسَامَةُ أَقَتَلْتَهُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ ؟ فَكَيْفَ تَصْنَعُ بِلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ؟ " فَمَا زَالَ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى وَجَدْتُ أَنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ أَسْلَمْتُ إِلَّا يَوْمَئِذٍ
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent us in the army to al-Huraqat. When we defeated them, I and a man from the Ansar pursued one of them. He said: There is no god but God. The Ansari held back, but I thought he said it only seeking protection, so I killed him. The Ansari raised that to the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ said: O Usama, did you kill him while he was saying: There is no god but God? How will you fare with 'There is no god but God' on the Day of Resurrection? He kept saying that until I felt that I had not embraced Islam except on that day.

✧ When Zayd was killed, Usama came and stood facing him; his eyes teared, so he moved away. The next day, he came and stood, then said: Today I receive from you what I received yesterday, so he moved away.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَصُومُ الْأَيَّامَ يَسْرُدُ حَتَّى يُقَالَ: لَا يُفْطِرُ، وَيُفْطِرُ الْأَيَّامَ حَتَّى يُقَالَ: لَا يَكَادُ يَصُومُ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ يَصُومُ مِنْ شَهْرٍ مِنَ الشُّهُورِ مَا يَصُومُ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّكَ تَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا تُفْطِرُ حَتَّى لَا تَكَادُ تَصُومُ، قُلْتُ: وَتَصُومُ الِاثْنَيْنِ وَالْخَمِيسَ، قَالَ: إِنَّهُمَا يَوْمَانِ تُعْرَضُ فِيهِمَا الْأَعْمَالُ عَلَى رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ فَأُحِبُّ أَنْ يُعْرَضَ عَمَلِي وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ، وَأَصُومُ مِنْ شَهْرِ شَعْبَانَ أَوْ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ شَهْرٌ يَغْفُلُ النَّاسُ عَنْهُ
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ used to fast for days on end until it was said: He does not break his fast, and he would break his fast for days on end until it was said: He scarcely fasts. And he did not fast in any month as much as he fasted in Sha'ban. I said: O Messenger of God, you fast until we say you do not break your fast, and you break your fast until we say you scarcely fast. I said: And you fast on Mondays and Thursdays. He said: These are two days on which deeds are presented to the Lord of the Worlds, so I love that my deeds be presented while I am fasting. And I fast during the month of Sha'ban, or from Sha'ban, for it is a month people are heedless of.

كُنَّا جُلُوسًا مَعَ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَسُئِلَ عَنْ صَلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى، فَقَالَ: هِيَ الظُّهْرُ، كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّيهَا بِالْهَجِيرِ.
✧ We were sitting with Usamah b. Zayd in the mosque, and he was asked about the middle prayer, and he said: It is Zuhr. The Messenger of God ﷺ used to pray it at the time of intense heat.

كُنْتُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَأَتَانِي الْعَبَّاسُ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، فَقَالَا: يَا أُسَامَةُ، اسْتَأْذِنْ لَنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، قَالَ: فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ: عَلِيٌّ، وَالْعَبَّاسُ يَسْتَأْذِنَانِ، فَقَالَ: " أَتَدْرِي مَا حَاجَتُهُمَا ؟ " قُلْتُ: لَا وَاللهِ، قَالَ: " لَكِنِّي أَدْرِي " قَالَ: فَأَذِنَ لَهُمَا، قَالَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ، جِئْنَاكَ لِتُخْبِرَنَا أَيُّ أَهْلِكَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكَ ؟ قَالَ: أَحَبُّ أَهْلِي إِلَيَّ فَاطِمَةُ بِنْتُ مُحَمَّدٍ فَقَالَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، مَا نَسْأَلُكَ عَنْ فَاطِمَةَ، قَالَ: " فَأُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ابْنُ الَّذِي أَنْعَمَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ، وَأَنْعَمْتُ عَلَيْهِ
✧ I was in the mosque when al-'Abbas and 'Ali b. Abi Talib came to me and said: O Usamah, ask permission for us to enter upon the Messenger of God ﷺ. So I went to the Messenger of God ﷺ and informed him, saying: 'Ali and al-'Abbas seek permission. He said: "Do you know what they need?" I said: No, by God. He said: "But I know." Then he gave them permission. They said: O Messenger of God ﷺ, we have come to you so that you tell us which of your family is most beloved to you. He said: The most beloved of my family to me is Fatimah bt. Muhammad. They said: O Messenger of God, we are not asking you about Fatimah. He said: "Then Usamah b. Zayd, the son of the one upon whom God bestowed favor, and upon whom I bestowed favor."
