✧ I arrived at Kufa with a companion of mine to bring back sandals from there. We went early to the market, while it had not yet arisen. I said to my companion, 'If only we entered the mosque' - and the mosque in those days was where the date-sellers were. So we entered, and there was a man from Qays called Ibn al-Muntafiq. I heard him saying: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was described to me and made clear to me, so I sought him in Makkah and was told he was in Mina. I sought him in Mina and was told he was at Arafat. I caught up with him while he was among a group of his companions riding. It was said to me, "Move aside from the path of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave the man alone; what does he need?" I drew near until I took hold of the nose-rein of his camel or its halter, and I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I ask you about what will save me from the Fire and what will bring me to Paradise." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his head to the sky, then lowered it, then turned his face toward me and said, "If you have been brief in the question, you have asked about something tremendous and lengthy. So remember from me: worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him; establish the prescribed prayer; pay the obligatory zakat; fast Ramadan; and whatever you would love people to do to you, do it to them; and whatever you would hate people to do to you, leave people alone from it. Let the camel go," or "the mount." Hammam said: "As for Hajj, he had already performed Hajj when he asked him."

✧ "Laaqit ibn 'Amir went to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, accompanied by his friend named Nuhayk ibn 'Asim ibn Malik ibn Muntafiq. Laaqit said, 'I left and my friend and I reached Madinah in the middle of the month of Rajab when we came to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, after he finished the Fajr prayer. He stood up to address the people and said, 'O people, I have concealed my voice from you for four days to make you hear it today. So, is there anyone whose people have sent him?' They said, 'Inform us what the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, said.' He replied, 'Perhaps he is preoccupied with his own speech or the speech of his companion, or perhaps the deviators are distracting him. Indeed, I am responsible to convey. Have I conveyed?' He repeated this three times. Then he said, 'Listen and live, listen and live, sit down.' The people sat down, and my friend and I stood until he finished. When he was at ease, I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, what knowledge of the unseen do you possess?' He laughed and shook his head, knowing that I sought some confidential information from him. He said, 'By the oath of Allah, your Lord, has kept five things of the unseen that only He knows.' He pointed with his hand and I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, what are they?' He replied, 'The knowledge of when a person will die, which none of you know; and the knowledge of when the sperm will fertilize the ovum, which none of you know; and the knowledge of what will happen tomorrow, which none of you know, whether you will be eating tomorrow or not; and the knowledge of the unseen matters that will happen on the Day of Judgment, where the righteous will be honored and the wicked will be humiliated, and your Lord will continue to laugh, knowing that your return is close.' Laaqit said, 'I said, we will not be deprived of a Lord who laughs, which is good news. And the knowledge of the Hour.'"

He said, 'Your Lord has knowledge of five things from the unseen that no one knows except Him.' He gestured with his hand, so I said, 'What are they, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'The knowledge of when a person's life will end, which you do not know, the knowledge of semen when it is in the womb, which is known while you do not know, the knowledge of what will happen tomorrow, which has been known while you are not aware, and the knowledge of the unseen Day of Judgment, in which you are humble and fearful. Is there anyone who will convey his people's message to them?' The people said, 'We know not what the Messenger of Allah will say.'
