حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ الْمُؤَدِّبُ ثنا عَفَّانُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ وَأَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ قَالَا ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ الْمُنْذِرِ الْقَزَّازُ ثنا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْحَوْضِيُّ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدُوسِ بْنِ كَامِلٍ ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْجَعْدِ قَالُوا ثنا هَمَّامُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جُحَادَةَ عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْيَشْكُرِيِّ عَنْ أبِيهِ قَالَ

قَدِمْتُ الْكُوفَةَ وَصَاحِبٌ لِي لِنَجْلِبَ مِنْهَا نِعَالًا فَغَدَوْنَا إِلَى السُّوقِ وَلَمْ يَقُمْ بَعْدُ فَقُلْتُ لِصَاحِبِي لَوْ دَخَلْنَا الْمَسْجِدَ وَالْمَسْجِدُ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي أَصْحَابِ التَّمْرِ فَدَخَلْنَا فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ قَيْسٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ ابْنُ الْمُنْتَفِقِ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ وُصِفَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَجُلِّيَ لِي فَطَلَبْتُهُ بِمَكَّةَ فَقِيلَ لِي هُوَ بِمِنًى وَطَلَبْتُهُ بِمِنًى فَقِيلَ لِي هُوَ بِعَرَفَاتٍ فَانْتَهَيْتُ إِلَيْهِ وَهُوَ فِي رَكِبٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَقِيلَ لِي تَنَحَّ عَنْ طَرِيقِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «دَعُوا الرَّجُلَ أَرِبَ مَا لَهُ؟» فَدَنَوْتُ حَتَّى أَخَذْتُ بِزِمَامِ نَاقَتِهِ أَوْ بِخِطَامِهَا فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عَمَّا يُنَجِّينِي مِنَ النَّارِ وَعَمَّا يُبَلِّغُنِي الْجَنَّةَ فَرَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ رَأْسَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ ثُمَّ نَكَسَ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلِيَّ بِوَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ لَئِنْ كُنْتَ أَوْجَزْتَ الْمَسْأَلَةَ لَقَدْ سَأَلْتَ عَنْ عَظِيمٍ طَوِيلٍ فَاحْفَظْ عَنِّي اعْبُدِ اللهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكْ بِهِ شَيْئًا وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ الْمَكْتُوبَةَ وَأَدِّ الزَّكَاةَ الْمَفْرُوضَةَ وَصُمْ رَمَضَانَ وَمَا تُحِبُّ أَنْ يَفْعَلَهُ النَّاسُ بِكَ فَافْعَلْهُ بِهِمْ وَمَا تَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَفْعَلَهُ النَّاسُ بِكَ فَذَرِ النَّاسَ مِنْهُ خَلِّ سَبِيلَ النَّاقَةِ أَوِ الرَّاحِلَةِ قَالَ هَمَّامٌ «وَأَمَّا الْحَجُّ فَقَدْ حَجَّ حَيْثُ سَأَلَهُ»

✧ I arrived at Kufa with a companion of mine to bring back sandals from there. We went early to the market, while it had not yet arisen. I said to my companion, 'If only we entered the mosque' - and the mosque in those days was where the date-sellers were. So we entered, and there was a man from Qays called Ibn al-Muntafiq. I heard him saying: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was described to me and made clear to me, so I sought him in Makkah and was told he was in Mina. I sought him in Mina and was told he was at Arafat. I caught up with him while he was among a group of his companions riding. It was said to me, "Move aside from the path of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave the man alone; what does he need?" I drew near until I took hold of the nose-rein of his camel or its halter, and I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I ask you about what will save me from the Fire and what will bring me to Paradise." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his head to the sky, then lowered it, then turned his face toward me and said, "If you have been brief in the question, you have asked about something tremendous and lengthy. So remember from me: worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him; establish the prescribed prayer; pay the obligatory zakat; fast Ramadan; and whatever you would love people to do to you, do it to them; and whatever you would hate people to do to you, leave people alone from it. Let the camel go," or "the mount." Hammam said: "As for Hajj, he had already performed Hajj when he asked him."
