✧ Al-Abbas ؓ had a house near the mosque. Umar ؓ asked him: 'Give it to me — or sell it to me — so I can include it in the mosque.' He refused. Umar ؓ said: 'Then appoint a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to judge between me and you.' So he appointed Ubayy b. Ka'b ؓ, and he ruled against Umar ؓ. Umar ؓ said: 'You are indeed one of the boldest of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He said: 'Or rather one of the most sincere to you, O Commander of the Believers.' Then he said: 'Do you not know that Dawud ﷺ was commanded to build the House of the Sanctuary, and he incorporated houses without their owners' permission? When the building reached the waists of men, its construction was prevented. So he said: "O Lord, then in my progeny after me?"'
