✧ A man said to Ya'qub ﷺ: 'What took away your sight and bent your back?' He said: 'As for what took my sight, it was weeping for Yusuf; and as for what bent my back, it was grief for his brother Binyamin.' He said: Then Jibril ﷺ came to him and said: 'O Ya'qub, do you complain to Allah, Exalted is He?' He said: 'I only complain of my anguish and sorrow to Allah.' Jibril ﷺ said to him: 'Allah knows best what you say than you do.' Then Jibril ﷺ left, and Ya'qub entered his house and said: 'O Lord, You have taken away my sight and bent my back; so return to me my two sweet-smelling ones that I may smell them once, then do with me what You will.' Jibril ﷺ came to him and said: 'O Ya'qub, Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, sends you greetings and says: Rejoice, for if they had been dead I would have raised them for you and comforted your eyes. And He says to you: O Ya'qub, do you know why I took away your sight and bent your back? And why the brothers of Yusuf did what they did?' He said: 'Because an orphan and a poor man came to you while he was fasting and hungry, and you and your family had slaughtered a sheep and eaten it, and you did not feed him. And He says: I have not loved anything of My creation as much as I love the orphans and the poor.'
