✧ A man killed ninety-nine people. Then he wanted to repent, so he went to a monk in a barren land and said, "O monk, I have killed ninety-nine people. Is there any repentance for me?" He said, "No." He said, "No doubt, by Allah, I will complete them to a hundred with you." Then he went to another monk and said, "I have killed ninety-nine people and completed them to a hundred with a monk. Is there any repentance for me?" He said, "You have gone to excess against yourself and committed a grave sin, but whoever repents, Allah turns to him." He said, "So he threw away the sword and said, 'By Allah, I will serve you until death separates us.'" He said, "He made a covenant with him not to disobey him." He said, "Then some people came who were travelers or afflicted with drought, and he used to practice medicine. The man said, 'Do you command me to do anything?' He said, 'Go and stoke the oven.' He said, 'So he went and stoked it until it became hot.' He said, 'It has become hot, so what do you command me?' He said, 'Go and fall into it.' He said, 'So he went and fell into it.' Then the monk remembered and stood up, and those with him stood up, and there he was in the oven, sweating, and the fire did not harm him. The monk said, 'I have come to know that your repentance has been accepted, so I will serve you forever until you depart from me.' Ibn Mas'ud ؓ said, 'Among the Children of Israel, when one of them committed a sin, he would wake up with the expiation for his sin written on the threshold of his door. Allah the Exalted has favored you over them, for you have been commanded to seek forgiveness, and you seek forgiveness from Allah the Exalted.' He said, 'And He has given this nation a verse which I would not love to have in exchange for the world and all that is in it: And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins...'"
