  1. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 604No grade recorded

The Prophet ﷺ would say in the morning: aṣbaḥnā wa-aṣbaḥa al-ḥamdu kulluhu li-llāhi, lā sharīka lahu, lā ilāha illā Allāhu, wa-ilayhi al-nushūr "We have reached the morning and and all praise belongs to Allah who has no partner. There is no god but Allah and to Him is the gathering.  In the evening he would say,  amsaynā wa-amsā al-mulku li-llāhi, wa-al-ḥamdu kulluhu li-llāhi, lā sharīka lahu, lā ilāha illā Allāhu, wa-ilayhi al-maṣīr "We have reached the evening and the kingdom belongs to Allah and all praise belongs to Allah who has no partner. There is no god but Allah and to Him is the return."

  2. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 605Hasan or sahih

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The noble son of the noble son of the noble son of the noble son was Yusuf son of Yaqub son of Ishaq son of Ibrahim, the Khalil of the Merciful, the blessed and Exalted." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If I had remained in prison for as long as Yusuf remained in prison and then the man with the invitation had come to me, I would have accepted it. When the messenger came to him, he said, 'Go back to your master and enquire of him what happened about the women who cut their hands.' (Yusuf 12:50) May Allah show mercy to Lut when he sought to find refuge with strength when he said to his people, 'If only I had the strength to combat you or could seek refuge in a some powerful support!' (Hud 11:80) Allah did not send any Prophet after him but that he was one of the wealthy of his people."

  3. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 606Sahih

al-Rabi used to go to Alqama every Friday. When I was not there, they would send for me. Once he came when I was not there. Alqama met me and told me: Did you not see what al-Rabi brought? He said: Do you not see how frequently people make dua and how rarely they are answered? That is because Allah Almighty only accepts the nakhilah (sincere) dua. I asked: Didn't Abdullah say that? He asked: What did he say? I said that Abdullah said: Allah does not listen to someone who wants other people to hear not someone who shows off nor who plays. He only listens to the one who makes a dua firmly from his heart. He asked, 'Did he mention Alqama?' He said: Yes.

  4. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 607Sahih

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When one of you makes a dua, he should not say, 'If you wish.' He should be firm in asking and he should have great hope. Allah does not think that anything that He gives is too great."

  5. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 608Sahih

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When one of you makes a dua, he should be firm in the dua and not say, 'O Allah, if you like, grant it to me.' Allah cannot be forced against His ˹will˺."

  6. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 609Weak

Abu Nu'aym, who is Wahb, said, "I saw Ibn 'Umar and Ibn az-Zubayr making supplication, cupping their palms in front of their faces."

  7. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 610Sahih

'A'isha say that she saw the Prophet ﷺ making supplication with his hands raised, saying, 'I am a man, so do not punish me. If I harm any man of the believers or revile him, do not punish me for that.'"

  8. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 611Sahih

Abu Hurayra said, "At-Tufayl ibn 'Amr ad-Dawsi came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'Messenger of Allah, Daws have rebelled and rejected, so ask Allah to curse them.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ faced the qibla and raised his hands and the people thought that he was going to curse them. He said, 'O Allah, guide Daws and lead them.'"

  9. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 612Sahih

Anas said, "No rain fell for a year and so one of the Muslims went to the Prophet ﷺ on Jumu'a (Friday). He said, 'Messenger of Allah, there has been no rain and the ground is dry and people's wealth has been destroyed.' He raised his hand when there was not a cloud to be seen in the sky. He stretched out his arms until I could see the whiteness of his armpits and asked Allah for rain. As soon as we finished the prayer, (the rain was such that) the youth whose house was near was afraid to return to his family. It last past Friday, The following Friday, they said, 'Messenger of Allah, the houses have fallen down and the paths are blocked.' He smiled and observed how quickly the son of Adam becomes discontented. He said while making a gesture with his hand, 'O Allah, around us and not on us.' And the rain cleared away from Madina."

  10. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 613Sahih

'Ikrima heard 'A'isha, may Allah be pleased with her, say that she saw the Prophet ﷺ raise his hands in supplication, saying, 'O Allah, I am only a man, so do not punish me. If I harm or revile a Muslim man, do not punish me for it!'"

  11. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 614Weak

✧ He said to the Prophet ﷺ, "Would you like a fortress and protection — the fortress of Daws?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ refused because of what Allah had reserved for the Anṣār. Then al-Ṭufayl emigrated, and with him emigrated a man from his people. The man fell ill and became fretful — or a word similar to that — and he crawled to a leather strap, took a broad-headed arrow, and cut his own wrist veins, and he died. Al-Ṭufayl saw him in a dream and asked, "What was done with you?" He replied, "I was forgiven because of my emigration to the Prophet ﷺ." He asked, "What is the matter with your hands?" He said, "It was said, 'We will not set right for you what you corrupted of your hands.'" So al-Ṭufayl related this to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, "O Allah, and for his hands, forgive," and he raised his hands.

  12. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 615Sahih

✧ From Anas b. Mālik, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge, saying, "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice, and I seek refuge in You from senility, and I seek refuge in You from miserliness."

  13. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 616Sahih

✧ From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said, "I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he calls upon Me."

  14. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 617Sahih

✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, who said: The master of seeking forgiveness is: "O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me, and I am Your servant, and I am faithful to my covenant and promise to You as much as I am able. I acknowledge to You Your favor upon me, and I acknowledge to You my sin, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done." If he says this in the evening and then dies, he will enter Paradise — or he will be among the people of Paradise — and if he says it in the morning and dies that day, the same applies.

  15. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 618Sahih

'A'isha said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the Duha prayer and then said, 'O Lord, forgive me and turn to me. You are the Ever-Turning back (to his slaves), the Merciful' a hundred times."

  17. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 620Sahih

✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, who said: The master of seeking forgiveness is that one says: "O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me, and I am Your servant, and I am faithful to my covenant and promise to You as much as I am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge to You Your favor upon me, and I acknowledge to You my sin, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You." He said: Whoever says it during the day with certainty in it and dies that day before evening, he is among the people of Paradise. And whoever says it at night with certainty in it and dies before morning, he is among the people of Paradise.

  18. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 621Sahih

  19. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 622Sahih

✧ From Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah, who said: There are phrases that follow the prayers; the one who says them will not be disappointed: "Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest" — one hundred times. Ibn Abī Unaysah and ʿAmr b. Qays raised it.

Safwan b. Abdullah b. Safwan, who was married to the daughter of Abu al-Darda, said: I visited them in Syria and found Umm al-Darda in the house, but not Abu al-Darda.  She asked: Are you intending to go on hajj this year? Yes, I replied. She said: Make dua to Allah and ask for good for us. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The dua of a Muslim man for his absent brother is answered. At his head there is a guardian angel: whenever he asks Allah to give his brother good, the angel says: Amin, and may you have the same." I met Abu al-Darda in the market and he said something similar which was related from the Prophet ﷺ.

  23. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 626Sahih

Ibn Umar said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ asking Allah to forgive him a hundred times in this assembly with the words,  rabbi ighfir lī wa-tub ʿalayya wa-irḥamnī, innaka anta al-tawwābu al-raḥīm. "My Lord, forgive me, accept my repentance, and have mercy on me. Indeed, You are the Accepter of repentance, the Most Merciful."

Ibn 'Umar said: I make supplication in everything I do: even that Allah will make the stride of my mount long so that I find ease in that.

  26. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 629Sahih

that he (Umar) used to make dua with his words:  allāhumma tawaffanī maʿa al-abrār, wa-lā tukhallifnī fī al-ashrār, wa-alḥiqnī bi-al-akhyār. Allah, let me die with the pious and do not leave me among the evil. Join me to the doers of good."

  27. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 630Sahih

Abdullah ˹b. Masud˺ used to use these duas a lot:  Our Lord, make peace between us and guide us on the path of Islam. Save us from the darkness to the light. Remove acts of deviance from us, both open and hidden. Bless us in our hearing, our eyes, our hearts, our spouses and our children and turn to us for You are the Oft-Returning, Most Merciful. Make us grateful for Your blessings and make us among those who praise it and speak of it and complete it upon us.

When Anas made dua for his brother, he said:  May Allah bless him with the blessing of those who are pious. They are neither unjust nor corrupt. They stand at night in prayer and fast in the day.

  29. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 632Sahih

My mother took me to the Prophet ﷺ and he stroked my head and prayed for provision to be given to me.

  30. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 633Sahih

Anas b. Malik was told that your brothers have come to you from Basra –and that day he was at the zawiyyah– wanting for you to make dua to Allah for them. He said:  O Allah, forgive them and show mercy to them. Give them good in this world and good in the Next World and protect them from the punishment of the Fire.  They asked him to say more and he said repeated the same thing. He said: If you are given this, you have been given the good of this world and the next.

The Prophet ﷺ took a bough and shook it and not all the leaves fell off. Then he shook it again and not all the leaves fell off. Then he shook it a third time but not all the leaves fell off. He said: "Saying Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, and there is no god but Allah, shake off sins as the leaves of a tree fall away."

a woman came to the Prophet ﷺ to complain to him of a need. He said: "Shall I show you something better than that? You should say, lā ilāha illa Allāh (There is no god but Allah) 33 times when you go to sleep and say subḥān Allāh (Glory be to Allah) 33 times, and say al-ḥamdu lillāh (Praise be to Allah) 34 times, and then that hundred is better than his world and all that it contains."

The Prophet ﷺ said: "If someone says, lā ilāha illa Allāh (There is no god but Allah) one hundred times, subḥān Allāh (Glory be to Allah) one hundred times, and Allāhu Akbar (Allah is Greater) one hundred times, that is better than freeing ten slaves and slaughtering seven camels."

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah, what is the best supplication? He answered: "Asking Allah for ʿāfiyah (well-being and forgiveness) in this world and the Hereafter." Then he came to him the following day and asked: Prophet of Allah, what is the best supplication? He answered: "Asking Allah for ʿāfiyah (forgiveness and well-being) in this world and the Hereafter. Abu Said al-Khudri reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "If any Muslim does not have anything to give as sadaqah, he should say in his dua: O Allah, bless Muhammad, Your slave and Your Messenger and bless the believers, both men and women, and the Muslims, both men and women. That will be sadaqah for him."

The Prophet ﷺ went out to open ground to answer a call of nature and did not find anyone to follow him. Umar went out and followed him with a clay pot or wudu vessel. He found him prostrating in a river bed.  He fell back and sat behind him until the Prophet ﷺ lifted his head. He said: “You have done well, Umar. When you found me prostrating, you went behind me. Jibril came to me and said: If someone sends the salawat on you once, Allah will send blessings upon ten times on him and raise him ten degrees.”

✧ From Ibn ʿAbbās who said: I spent the night at Maymūnah's. The Prophet ﷺ got up, relieved himself, washed his face and hands, then slept. Then he got up, went to the water skin, untied its strap, then performed ablution, a moderate ablution, not excessive but complete, then prayed. I got up and stretched, disliking that he should see that I had been observing him. I performed ablution. He stood to pray, and I stood at his left. He took hold of my ear and turned me to his right. His night prayer was completed as thirteen rakʿahs. Then he lay down and slept until he snored, for when he slept he snored. Then Bilāl called him to prayer, and he prayed without performing ablution again. In his supplication he said: O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my hearing, light on my right, light on my left, light above me, light below me, light in front of me, light behind me, and make the light great for me.

When the Prophet ﷺ would stand at night and pray, and when he had finished his prayer, he would praise Allah as He deserves, then among the last of his words would be: allāhumma ijʿal lī nūrā fī qalbī, wa-ijʿal lī nūrā fī samʿī, wa-ijʿal lī nūran fī baṣarī, wa-ijʿal lī nūran ʿan yamīnī, wa-nūran ʿan shimālī, wa-ijʿal lī nūran min bayna yadayya, wa-nūran min khalfī, wa-zidnī nūran, wa-zidnī nūran, wa-zidnī nūran. “O Allah, place for me light in my heart; and place for me light in my hearing; and place for me light in my sight; and place for me light on my right, and light on my left; and place for me light in front of me, and light behind me; and increase me in light, and increase me in light, and increase me in light.”

✧ That he may assault you, then say: 'Allah is Most Great; Allah is mightier than all His creation; Allah is mightier than what I fear and dread. I seek refuge in Allah, besides whom there is no god, the One who holds the seven heavens lest they fall upon the earth except by His permission, from the evil of Your servant so-and-so, and his armies, followers, and partisans from among the jinn and mankind. ✧ From Jabir, who said: A stinking wind blew during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Some people among the hypocrites backbit some people among the Muslims, so this wind was sent for that."

✧ He said: If he says about him what he knows, then he has backbitten him, and if he says about him what he does not know, then he has slandered him.

It is reported by Jabir bin Abdullah (ra) that they had accompanied the messenger of Allah when they came to two graves. Both the inmate of the graves were being punished. He said," They are being punished not for committing a grave sin. But, yes! (They are grave sins though on the face of it they are ordinary and it is easy to avoid them but their punishment is severe.) One of them was given to backbite other people while the other was not. Careful to clean himself of urine drops (over his body)". He then asked for one or two branches of fresh date palm and split them and dug them on each grave. He said afterwards," Soon their punishment will be softened as long as the branches are green." Or he said, “Until they dry up.”

✧ For one of you to eat this until he fills his belly is better than eating the flesh of a Muslim.

✧ From Abu Hurayrah, who said: Maʿiz b. Malik al-Aslami came, and the Prophet ﷺ stoned him on the fourth [confession]. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by him with a group of his companions. Two men among them said, "This traitor came to the Prophet ﷺ time after time, each time he sent him back, until he was killed like a dog is killed." The Prophet ﷺ remained silent about them until he passed by the carcass of a donkey with its leg raised. He said, "Eat from this." They said, "From the carcass of a donkey, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "That which you took from the honor of your brother just now is more. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, he is in a river among the rivers of Paradise, plunging in."

I went out with my father (Ubadah b. Samit) when I was a young boy, and we met an old man. I said, “Uncle, what kept you from giving your servant this long striped cloak and taking the mantle, so that you would have two mantles and he would have a striped cloak ˹so that he will be fully covered˺?” He turned to my father and said, “Is this your son?” He said, “Yes.” So he stroked my head and said, “May Allah bless you. I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Feed them from what you eat, and clothe them from what you wear.’ O son of my brother, losing the goods of this world is dearer to me than that he should take from the goods of the Hereafter.” I said, “Father, who is this man?” He said, “Abu al-Yusr Ka‘b b. Amr.”
