✧ From Mujāhid, who said: A man from among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ met me and took hold of my shoulder from behind and said, "Indeed, I love you." I said, "May the One for whom you love me love you." He said, "Were it not that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'When a man loves another man, he should tell him that he loves him,' I would not have told you." Then he began to offer me a proposal of marriage, saying, "We have a slave girl, but she is one-eyed."

✧ He said, "If you love a brother, do not dispute with him, do not quarrel with him, and do not ask about him; for perhaps you will meet an enemy of his and he will tell you what is not true of him, and thus cause division between you and him."
✧ From the Prophet ﷺ: “Whoever loves a brother for the sake of Allah, and says, ‘I love you for the sake of Allah,’ then both of them will enter Paradise together, and the one who loved for the sake of Allah will be higher in rank, because of his love, than the one he loved for His sake.”

✧ From ʿAbdullah b. ʿAmr: “We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man from the desert came, wearing a robe of fine silk, and stood over the head of the Prophet ﷺ. He said, ‘Your companion has degraded every horseman—or he said: he intends to degrade every horseman and elevate every shepherd.’ The Prophet ﷺ took hold of the collar of his robe and said, ‘Do I not see you wearing the clothing of one who lacks understanding?’ Then he said: ‘When the Prophet of Allah, Nūḥ ﷺ, was on his deathbed, he said to his son: I will tell you my final instruction. I command you with two things and forbid you from two things. I command you with “there is no god but Allah,” for if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed on one side of a scale, and “there is no god but Allah” on the other, it would outweigh them. And if the seven heavens and the seven earths were formed into a solid ring, “there is no god but Allah” would shatter them. And [I command you with] “Glory be to Allah and with His praise,” for it is the prayer of everything, and by it everything is given provision. And I forbid you from shirk and pride.’ I said—or it was said: ‘Messenger of Allah, we know what shirk is, but what is pride? Is it that one of us has a fine garment that he wears?’ He said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Is it that one of us has two good sandals with good straps?’ He said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Is it that one of us has a mount that he rides?’ He said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Is it that one of us has companions who sit with him?’ He said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Messenger of Allah, then what is pride?’ He said, ‘Rejecting the truth and belittling people.’”
✧ From the Prophet ﷺ: “Whoever exalts himself in his own mind or struts in his walk will meet Allah, Mighty and Majestic, while He is angry with him.”
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “He is not arrogant who eats with his servant, rides a donkey in the marketplaces, and tethers a sheep and milks it.”
Salih, the garment-seller, reported that his grandmother said, "I saw 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, buy fates for a dirham and put them in his blanket. I said to him (or a man said to him), 'I will carry it for you, Amir al-Mu'minin.' He said, 'No, the father of the family is the one who is the most entitled to carry it.'"

✧ I heard al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr saying from the pulpit: “Satan has snares and traps. Satan’s snares and traps are: insolence at Allah’s blessings, boasting about Allah’s gifts, pride over Allah’s servants, and following whims in anything other than what pleases Allah.”
✧ From the Prophet ﷺ: “Paradise and the Fire argued—and Sufyān also said: Paradise and the Fire disputed. The Fire said, ‘The tyrants enter me, and the arrogant enter me.’ Paradise said, ‘The weak enter me, and the poor enter me.’ Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said to Paradise, ‘You are My mercy; through you I show mercy to whomever I will.’ Then He said to the Fire, ‘You are My punishment; through you I punish whomever I will. Each of you will be filled.’”
✧ From Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān: “The Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were not stiff or pretentiously solemn.
✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ, and he was handsome. He said, “I love beauty, and I have been given what you see, so much so that I would not like anyone to surpass me—either he said: even by a sandal strap, or he said: by a red shoelace. Is that pride?” He said, “No. Pride is rejecting the truth and looking down on people.”

✧ From the Prophet ﷺ: “The arrogant will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection like tiny ants in the form of men. Humiliation will cover them from every side. 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar reported that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab spoke in the Year of the Drought, which was a severe, disastrous year, after 'Umar had done his best to help the Bedouins with camels, wheat and oil from the fields to the point where all the fields were dried up as a result of those efforts. he stood up to make supplication, saying, "O Allah! Provide them at the tops of the mountains!" Allah answered that supplication for him and the Muslims. When abundant rain fell, he said, "Praise belongs to Allah! By Allah, if Allah had not given us relief, I would not have left the people of any Muslim's house with wealth without putting a like number of poor people with him. Two will not die with food which will support one person."

Sa'id ibn al-'As reported that 'Uthman and 'A'isha told him that Abu Bakr asked for permission to come in to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was lying of 'A'isha's bed, wearing 'A'isha's woollen shirt. He gave Abu Bakr permission to enter while he was like that. he gave him what he needed and then Abu Bakr left. Then 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, asked for permission to come in and he gave him permission to come in while he was like that. He gave him what he needed and then 'Umar left. 'Uthman said, "Then I asked for permission to come in and he sat up and told 'A'isha, 'Take your garment.' I told him what I needed and then I left.' 'A'isha asked, 'Messenger of Allah, why did I see that you did not do for Abu Bakr and 'Umar what you did for 'Uthman?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ''Uthman is a modest man and I feared that if I gave him permission to come in while I was in that state he would not tell me what he needed.'"
✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, who said: Modesty is not found in anything but it beautifies it, and obscenity is not found in anything but it disfigures it.
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a man who was admonishing his brother about modesty, and he said, "Leave him, for modesty is part of faith." ʿAbdullāh narrated: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Salamah narrated to me, from Ibn Shihāb, from Sālim, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: The Prophet ﷺ passed by a man who was reproaching his brother about modesty, as if he was saying, "It has harmed you." He said, "Leave him, for modesty is part of faith."
'A'isha said, "The Prophet was lying down in my room with his thigh uncovered when Abu Bakr asked for permission to enter. He gave him permission to enter, remaining as he was. Then 'Umar asked for permission to come in and he gave him permission, remaining as he was. Then 'Uthman asked for permission to enter and the Prophet ﷺ sat up and arranged his garment, and then he came in and spoke. When he left, I said, 'Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr came in and you did not exert yourself nor concern yourself with him. Then 'Umar came in and you did not exert yourself nor concern yourself with him. Then 'Uthman came in and you sat up and arranged your garment.' He said, 'Should I not be modest before a man before whom the angels are modest?'"
