29. Visiting the Ill

  1. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 491Weak

✧ A man came to Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah while he was ill and said, “How has the amir's reward fared this evening?” He said, “Do you know what you are rewarded for?” He said, “For what afflicts us in what we dislike.” He said, “You are only rewarded for what you spend in the way of Allah and what is spent on you.” Then he enumerated all the equipment of the saddle until he reached the cheek-strap of the horse. “But this illness that afflicts your bodies, Allah expiates by it some of your sins.”

  2. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 492Sahih

✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, who said: No fatigue, illness, worry, grief, harm, or distress befalls a Muslim, even a thorn that pricks him, but Allah expiates some of his sins by it.

  3. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 493Sahih

✧ From his father, who said: I was with Salmān when he visited a sick person in Kindah. When he entered upon him, he said, 'Rejoice, for Allah makes the illness of the believer an expiation for him and a means of seeking restoration, while the illness of the wicked is like a camel that its owners have hobbled and then released; it does not know why it was hobbled or why it was released.'

  4. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 494Sahih

✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, who said: Affliction will continue to befall the believing man and woman in his body, his family, and his wealth until he meets Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, with no sin upon him. Muhammad b. ʿUbayd narrated to us: ʿUmar b. Ṭalḥah narrated to us from Muḥammad b. ʿAmr something similar, and he added: 'and in his children.'

  5. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 495Hasan or sahih

✧ The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Has Umm Mildam taken hold of you?' He said, 'What is Umm Mildam?' He said, 'A heat between the skin and the flesh.' He said, 'No.' He said, 'Have you had a headache?' He said, 'What is a headache?' He said, 'A wind that presents itself in the head and strikes the veins.' He said, 'No.' When he arose, he said, 'Whoever would like to look at a man from the people of the Fire, let him look at this man.'

✧ His people and the Anṣār heard of that, so they came to him in the middle of the night or near dawn. He said, 'What hour is this?' We said, 'The middle of the night or near dawn.' He said, 'I seek refuge with Allah from the morning of the Fire.' He said, 'Have you brought what I will be shrouded in?' We said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Do not be extravagant with shrouds, for if I have good with Allah, I will be exchanged for something better than it, and if it is the other, I will be quickly stripped.' Ibn Idrīs said: 'We came to him in part of the night.'

It is reported by Ayeshah that the Prophet said, "When a Believer falls ill, Allah cleans him of sin as a kiln removes the rust from iron".

It is narrated by Ayeshah (ra) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "when a Muslim is afflicted by an anxiety, pain or sickness then, because of that, his sins are atoned. So much, so that if a thorn pricks him or he suffers a simple, minor injury (His sins are forgiven)”.

✧ Her father said: I fell severely ill in Makkah, and the Prophet ﷺ came to visit me. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I am leaving wealth, and I am leaving only one daughter. Should I bequeath two-thirds of my wealth and leave one-third?' He said, 'No.' I said, 'Should I bequeath half and leave her half?' He said, 'No.' I said, 'Should I bequeath one-third and leave her two-thirds?' He said, 'One-third, and one-third is a lot.' Then he placed his hand on my forehead, wiped my face and belly, and said, 'O Allah, heal Saʿd and complete his hijrah for him.' I continued to feel the coolness of his hand on my liver, as it seemed to me, until this very hour.

✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, who said: No Muslim whom Allah afflicts in his body but that what he used to do in his health is recorded for him as long as he is ill. If He restores him to health—I think he said—'He refines him,' and if He takes him, He forgives him. Mūsā narrated to us: Ḥammād b. Salamah narrated to us from Yanām, from Anas, from the Prophet ﷺ something similar, and he added: 'He said: If He heals him, He refines him.'

✧ From Abū Hurayrah, who said: Fever came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'Send me to the one of your family dearest to you.' So he sent it to the Anṣār, and it remained upon them for six days and their nights. That became severe for them, so he came to them in their dwellings, and they complained of that to him. The Prophet ﷺ began entering house by house and tent by tent, supplicating for their well-being. When he returned, a woman among them followed him and said, 'By the One who sent you with the truth, I am of the Anṣār, and my father is of the Anṣār, so supplicate to Allah for me as you supplicated for the Anṣār.' He said, 'As you wish: if you wish, I will supplicate to Allah to heal you, and if you wish, you may be patient and Paradise will be yours.' She said, 'Rather, I will be patient, and I will not make Paradise a risk.'

✧ He saw Umm Zufar, that tall black woman, on the staircase of the Kaʿbah. He said: And ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Mulaykah informed me that al-Qāsim informed him that ʿĀʾishah informed him that the Prophet ﷺ used to say: Whatever afflicts the believer, even a thorn or more, is an expiation.

✧ I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: There is no believing man or believing woman, no Muslim man or Muslim woman, who falls ill with an illness except that Allah removes some of his sins thereby.

  19. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 509Sahih

✧ ʿAbdullāh said to her, "How do you find yourself?" She said, "In pain." He said, "I am near death." She said, "Perhaps you desire my death and therefore you wish for it? Do not do that. By Allah, I do not desire to die until one of two ends befalls you: either you are killed and I count my reward for you, or you are victorious and my eye is gladdened. Beware lest a plan is presented to you and you do not agree with it, then you accept it out of dislike for death." He only meant that Ibn al-Zubayr would be killed, and that would grieve her.

  20. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 510Sahih

✧ He entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was feverish and had a velvet covering over him. He placed his hand on him and found its heat above the covering. Abū Saʿīd said, "How severe your fever is, O Messenger of Allah!" He said, "Indeed it is like that for us; the affliction is intensified for us and the reward is multiplied for us." He said, "O Messenger of Allah, which people are most severely tried?" He said, "The prophets, then the righteous. One of them would be tried with poverty until he found nothing but a cloak that he would shred and wear, and he would be tried with lice until it killed him. Indeed one of them was more delighted by affliction than any of you is by a gift."

  21. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 511Sahih

✧ I heard Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh say: I fell ill with an illness, and the Prophet ﷺ came to visit me, along with Abū Bakr, both walking. They found me unconscious. The Prophet ﷺ performed ablution, then poured his ablution water over me, and I regained consciousness. There was the Prophet ﷺ, and I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what should I do with my wealth? How should I dispose of my wealth?" He did not answer me with anything until the verse of inheritance was revealed.

✧ A child of the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became severely ill. His mother sent to the Prophet ﷺ, saying that her child was dying. He said to the messenger, "Go and tell her: To Allah belongs what He takes, and to Him belongs what He gives, and everything with Him is for a fixed term. Let her be patient and seek reward." The messenger returned and informed her. She sent to him, swearing that he should come. The Prophet ﷺ stood up with a group of his Companions, among them Saʿd b. ʿUbādah. The Prophet ﷺ took the child and placed him between his chest and upper chest, while his chest made a rattling sound like the rattling of an old waterskin. The eyes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ flowed with tears. Saʿd said, "Do you weep while you are the Messenger of Allah?" He said, "I weep only as a mercy for her. Allah does not show mercy to His servants except the merciful."
