Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 545

When someone has love for a person, he should not quarrel with him nor ask about him

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ أَنَّ أَبَا الزَّاهِرِيَّةِ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ

أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِذَا أَحْبَبْتَ أَخًا فَلاَ تُمَارِهِ وَلاَ تُشَارِّهِ وَلاَ تَسْأَلْ عَنْهُ فَعَسَى أَنْ تُوَافِيَ لَهُ عَدُوًّا فَيُخْبِرَكَ بِمَا لَيْسَ فِيهِ فَيُفَرِّقَ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُ

Translation

✧ He said, "If you love a brother, do not dispute with him, do not quarrel with him, and do not ask about him; for perhaps you will meet an enemy of his and he will tell you what is not true of him, and thus cause division between you and him."
