Perhaps you will be left behind until some people benefit through you and others are harmed through you. O God, complete the emigration of my companions and do not turn them back on their heels.

✧ Four verses were revealed concerning my father. He said: My father said: I acquired a sword on the day of Badr, and I brought it to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of God, give it to me as a share of spoil." He said, "Put it back where you took it from." I repeated, "Will I be left like one who has no use?" The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "Put it back where you took it from." Then this verse was revealed: "They ask you about the spoils of war"—and in the reading of ʿAbd Allāh it is thus: "They ask you for the spoils of war," the whole verse. He said: And the mother of Saʿd said, "Has not God commanded obedience to parents? I will not eat food or drink drink until you disbelieve in God." She abstained from food and drink until they had to pry her mouth open with a stick. Then it was revealed: "And We have enjoined upon man goodness to his parents; but if they strive with you to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them." A man of the Anṣār prepared food and invited some of the Muhājirūn and some of the Anṣār. We ate and drank until we became drunk, then we began boasting. A man raised the jawbone of a camel and struck Saʿd's nose with it, splitting it. Saʿd's nose was split. That was before wine was forbidden. Then it was revealed: "O you who believe, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated," and: "Wine, gambling, stone altars, and divining arrows are only defilement from the work of Satan," the verse. The Messenger of God ﷺ entered upon Saʿd while he was ill, and he wanted to bequeath all his wealth. He kept reducing it for him until he reached one-third. He said: The people bequeath one-third.

✧ I wonder at the Muslim: when a calamity befalls him, he seeks reward and is patient; and when good befalls him, he praises God and gives thanks. Indeed, the Muslim is rewarded in everything, even in the morsel he raises to his mouth.

✧ We saw ourselves with the Messenger of God ﷺ when we had no food except the leaves of trees, until one of us would defecate as a sheep does. Then the Banū Asad came to chastise me for Islam. I have then surely lost and my effort has gone astray.

✧ I asked Saʿd about buying sult (hulled barley) with white [wheat], and he disliked it. Saʿd said: I asked the Messenger of God ﷺ about fresh dates for dry dates. He said: Do fresh dates decrease when they dry? They said: Yes. He said: No—or he forbade it.

✧ I said: O Messenger of God, which people are most severely tried? He said: The prophets, then the next best, then the next best. A man is tried according to his religion.
