حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي عَوْنٍ الثَّقَفِيِّ 2، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ، يَقُولُ:

قَالَ عُمَرُ لِسَعْدٍ ؓ: قَدْ شَكَوْكَ فِي كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى فِي الصَّلَاةِ، فَقَالَ: أَمَّا أَنَا فَكُنْتُ أَمُدُّ فِي الْأُولَيَيْنِ، وَأَحْذِفُ فِي الْأُخْرَيَيْنِ، وَمَا آلُو مَا اقْتَدَيْتُ بِهِ مِنْ صَلَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ " فَقَالَ: ذَاكَ الظَّنُّ بِكَ، أَوْ ظَنِّي بِكَ

Translation

✧ ʿUmar said to Saʿd ؓ: They have complained about you in everything, even in prayer. He said: As for me, I used to lengthen in the first two [rakʿahs] and shorten in the last two, and I do not fall short of what I followed from the prayer of the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: That is what was thought of you—or my thought of you.
