✧ I fell ill with a sickness from which I nearly died, and the Messenger of God ﷺ entered upon me. I said: “O Messenger of God, I have abundant wealth, and only one daughter will inherit from me. Should I give all my wealth in charity?” He said: “No.” I said: “Should I give half in charity?” or he said: “Should I bequeath half?” He said: “No.” I said: “O Messenger of God, then what should I bequeath?” He said: “A third, and a third is a lot. If you leave your heirs rich, it is better than leaving them poor, begging from people’s hands.”

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it, and it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) from him. Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm also narrated it, and there is disagreement about him concerning it: al-Thawrī narrated it from Saʿd, from ʿĀmir b. Saʿd, from his father; and Misʿar said, from Saʿd: "Some of the family of Saʿd narrated to me, from Saʿd." And it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) from ʿĀmir b. Saʿd, from his father, through the narration of al-Zuhrī and through the narration of Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm.
