✧ Saʿd ؓ heard a son of his saying, “O God, I ask You for Paradise and its chambers such-and-such, and I seek refuge in You from the Fire and its fetters and chains.” Saʿd said to him, “You have asked God for abundant good and sought refuge in Him from abundant evil”—or he said, “great evil”—“and I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘There will be people who go to extremes in supplication. It is sufficient for you to say: O God, I ask You for all good, what I know of it and what I do not know, and I seek refuge in You from all evil, what I know of it and what I do not know.’”
